You won't believe how high Florida basketball climbed in ESPN's latest preseason rankings
The final major deadline of college basketball's offseason — the date that players must withdraw their names from the NBA draft if they want to return to college — passed on Wednesday, May 28. With that milestone now in the rearview mirror, the rosters for the upcoming 2025-26 campaign are clearer than ever.
The decisions leading up to the deadline resulted in both winners and losers, depending on who departed and who came back to school. Among those in the former category are the Florida Gators, who have already been anointed as overwhelming winners according to a trio of major publications.
A little under a week after the big day passed, ESPN's basketball recruiting insider Jeff Borzello updated his men's college basketball preseason top 25 rankings, sending the Orange and Blue on a meteoric rise from No. 18 to No. 2 overall, just behind the Purdue Boilermakers, who held onto their top spot.
"The debate over preseason No. 1 intensified with Milos Uzan returning to Houston and Florida adding Boogie Fland while also getting back Alex Condon," Borzello notes. "Both programs are squarely in the conversation alongside Purdue, with UConn and St. John's not far behind."

More luxury homebuyers paying with cash this year, report says
More luxury homebuyers are paying with cash to acquire properties this year, a report from Coldwell Banker Real Estate revealed. The company said in its '2025 Mid-Year Report' that more than half of over 200 surveyed Coldwell Banker luxury property specialists reported an uptick in wealthy buyers purchasing homes with cash. Advertisement Roughly 34.1% said there has been a 'slight increase' while 16.6% said there has been a 'significant' rise in that method. Mortgage rates have played into the increase in buyers paying cash to acquire homes, according to National Association of Realtors Chief Economist and Senior Vice President of Research Lawrence Yun. 'High mortgage rates are not appealing for borrowing, and, therefore, that induces the wealthy to pay all cash for real estate (after selling off a few of their assets),' he told FOX Business. 4 Mortgage rates have reportedly played into the increase in buyers paying cash to acquire homes. Meanwhile, for 45.4% of specialists, cash purchases have stayed at their current levels so far this year, per the report. On the flip side, just 3.9% of the Coldwell Banker luxury property specialists indicated their clients were moving away from buying homes through all-cash deals, Coldwell Banker Real Estate said. 4 A lot of luxury homebuyers are selling off some of their assets to help purchase the home, according to Yun. Golden_hind – Advertisement The trend in cash purchases comes as roughly 68% of Coldwell Banker agents said rich homebuyers they work with are 'maintaining – or increasing – current real estate exposure.' 'We've had a lot of volatility along with macroeconomic and geopolitical uncertainty this year. There's been a lot of transition and that's actually turned a lot affluent buyers toward real estate,' Jenna Stauffer, a Florida-based broker and Global Real Estate Advisor for Sotheby's Internal Realty, told FOX Business. 'Real estate proves itself as an anti-fragile asset,' she continued. 'Unlike many investments that struggle under uncertainty, real estate tends to strengthen over time and remains one of the best long-term hedges against inflation. That's why so many smart investors and high net worth buyers are parking their money in property this year. They're using it to preserve and grow their wealth.' 4 Just 3.9% of the Coldwell Banker property specialists said their clients were moving away from buying homes through cash-only deals. – Advertisement While wealthy buyers are sticking to their guns when it comes to what they want from a home, Coldwell Banker Real Estate also said they 'are being strategic about their purchases and prioritizing aspects of the home that create value over aesthetic perfection' such as affordability, taxes, and investment potential. That could drive a rise in 'smart buyers' focused on 'discernment and strategy instead of pure indulgence,' according to the report. The report also shed light on how ultra-high net worth buyers with over $30 million in assets and 'aspirational buyer' worth $1-5 million are engaging with the luxury real estate market. Some in the latter category, faced with economic uncertainty, are approaching the market with caution, per the report. 4 Coldwell Banker Real Estate said that the wealthy buyers 'are being strategic about their purchases and prioritizing aspects of the home that create value over aesthetic perfection.' Andy Dean – Michael Altneu, vice president of Coldwell Banker Global Luxury, said in the report that the luxury market 'has continued to show strength' in 2025 but various factors have 'tempered a more full-scale rebound in market activity.' The Institute for Luxury Home Marketing data showed a 1.7% increase in sales of luxury single-family homes in the period spanning January to the end of May from those seen in the same timeframe last year and a 1.8% uptick in sale prices, according to Coldwell Banker Real Estate. For attached luxury properties, there was a 8.1% decrease in sales but the median transaction price went up an average of 8.4%. Advertisement Both types of properties saw year-over-year increases in supply during the first five months of the year, with luxury single-family homes posting a 19.6% jump and attached notching a 14.8% rise, the report said. The U.S. saw active listings of single family homes, condos, townhomes and other types of housing reach over 1 million in May, a level that the country hadn't climbed above since the winter of 2019, according to a report released in early June.

Why Mike Brown is a smart hire for the Knicks
Earlier this week, SNY's Ian Begley reported that the Knicks selected head coach Mike Brown as the successor to Tom Thibodeau, who was relieved days after the team's first Eastern Conference Finals appearance in a quarter century. Both the firing and hiring have drawn natural anxiety from the fanbase, given Thibodeau's historically successful tenure at The Garden and Brown's mixed resume. But placing aside the benefit of the doubt that team president Leon Rose has earned, this was an objectively smart hire for the Knicks as they look to take the next step forward and win a championship. Advertisement Assuming that moving on from Thibodeau was completely necessary -- despite what the national talking heads spewed -- the Knicks ran a strong and competent search to seek out Brown. It was a multi-week process that began with, as comical as it may have seemed, the savvy move of trying to poach the NBA's best employed coaches. In the meantime, the Knicks interviewed multiple coaches from different levels for multiple rounds, eventually leading to Brown. And of all the available coaches, there's an easy argument to make for Brown being the best of the bunch. Brown has coached in the NBA for 28 years, assisting under names like Rick Carlisle, Gregg Popovich, and Steve Kerr. He was at the helm for LeBron James' first tenure with the Cavaliers. He had some spotty followups with the Steve Nash-Dwight Howard Lakers, and then a return go-around in Cleveland. He also won his second Coach of the Year award with the Kings in 2023-24 before being fired last winter. Around the league, Brown is known for being a creative schemer and strong connector to his players. Given the franchises and rosters involved, there's plenty of gray surrounding all four of his firings. Advertisement The Knicks interviewed some other recent head coaches in James Borrego and Taylor Jenkins, but they lack Brown's experience. Other accomplished retreads like Terry Stotts, Mike Malone, and Mark Jackson were floated by the public, but they too have their respective flaws and concerns. The Knicks could've gambled on an untried assistant, but given the stage, expectations, and starpower surrounding the team, it may have been too big of an ask. It's certainly possible they missed out on the next Ime Udoka or Mark Daigneault, but it's equally understandable why they didn't test this route. Sometimes the correct answer is the simplest one -- replace the coach you fired with the best replacement available. Even if one argues that Brown wasn't the No. 1 option, he checks plenty of other boxes as well. As much as Thibodeau's results spoke for themselves, they clearly didn't meet the front office's standards, and the processes behind them left much to be desired from management, the players, and fanbase. Advertisement Few in-season practices, late to adjust, failure to experiment with schemes, and the popular minutes concern are just a few of the key weaknesses of the Thibodeau-era that led to this moment. Naturally, in seeking out his replacement, the Knicks wanted a coach that would address these specific flaws. Reports suggested that they wanted a more collaborative coach, both with management and assistants. One with a more dynamic approach to schemes that would look to utilize the full roster, rather than rely strictly on key players. For the most part, the Knicks got their man. If one wants to contend that Thibodeau is the better overall coach, by all means. But Brown is a different one, and different just might be what this Knicks team needs. Brown implements motion offenses that emphasizes player and ball movement, while his defenses have featured lots of aggressive and creative coverages to make up for weak defenders. We saw the latter work to the Knicks' advantage deep in the playoffs with surprising effectiveness, given they spent little time with these schemes during the season. Advertisement Their offense never felt truly maximized, given the personnel and individual production levels, and the unit was at its poorest in the playoffs. Perhaps Brown's less-sticky approach to schemes and rotations can untap that potential... or will it merely expose the roster as more flawed on that end than anticipated? Ultimately, it's easy to see why the Knicks find the upside here. Given the roster, is what they need an effort-maximizing coach that's set in his systems, or a malleable, more strategic coach that's still extremely player-first? Obviously, in covering up these issues, Brown's own unique deficiencies will come out and bring their own set of problems. We'll see how they're addressed throughout the season and how damaging they still are in the playoffs. But the front office is betting on the team climbing higher under Brown.
