Associated Press PITTSBURGH (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Willson Contreras sustained a left hand contusion after being hit by a pitch by Pittsburgh ace Paul Skenes while leading off the fourth inning of Tuesday night's 1-0 loss to the Pirates. Contreras stayed in the game to run the bases and was thrown out at home plate by Pirates left fielder Tommy Pham to end the inning while trying to score from second base on Pedro Pages' single. Contreras had X-rays on the hand, and they came back negative. He and Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said it is doubtful that the three-time All-Star will play in the teams' series finale on Wednesday. Contreas was replaced in the bottom of the fourth by Alec Burleson, who shifted from left field. Garrett Hampson took over in left. Contreras is hitting .248 in 82 games with 11 home runs and 51 RBIs. The 33-year-old Contreras sustained a season-ending fractured left middle finger last Aug. 24 when he was hit by a pitch. 'When I get hit in the arm or hand, I get a little worried,' Contreras said. 'I think I'm going to be OK, just a day or two (off).' (AP) — Juventus coach Igor Tudor complained about the tough weather conditions in South Florida following the team's elimination from the Club World Cup with a 1-0 loss Tuesday to Real Madrid in the round of 16. The gametime temperature for the 3 p.m. start was 86 degrees (30 Celsius) with 70% humidity at Hard Rock Stadium, site of seven World Cup matches next year. The humidity made it feel like 90 degrees (32 Celsius). 'We played under really difficult conditions. The players were really fatigued,' Tudor said. Tudor said 10 players asked during the game to be replaced, but he did not identify them by name. After a 1-hour, 53-minute delay during a round of 16 win over Benfica on Saturday at Charlotte, North Carolina, Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca had said the U.S. is not the right host country for the Club World Cup. Juventus and Inter Milan both were eliminated in the round of 16, leaving no Italian clubs in the quarterfinals. 'It's a lot of factors that weighed in," Tudor said. 'It's the end of the season. They had a lot of stress on them, that takes away energy as well and then the heat is another thing that makes things more difficult.' Juve's loss to Real is one of the least surprising results of the round of 16, but the heat wave in the United States during this past month has been of concern to players and their unions. (AP) — Zakai Zeigler of Tennessee has dropped his bid for a federal judge to let him play a fifth season of Division I basketball in five years, but his lawsuit against the NCAA will continue, his attorneys said Tuesday. Last month, a judge denied Zeigler's request for a preliminary injunction that would allow him to return to the Volunteers. He appealed that ruling, but his attorneys voluntarily withdrew the appeal on Tuesday. 'While we had hoped to see Zakai back in orange and white, he's embracing the next chapter of his basketball career with optimism and resolve,' the law firm Litson PLLC said in a statement. 'We remain committed to pressing his case forward in the trial court, where the core legal issues remain very much alive.' The 5-foot-9 Zeigler was not selected in last week's NBA draft, but ESPN reported that the Detroit Pistons have signed him to their Summer League squad. Zeigler is one of several athletes suing the NCAA over its eligibility rules, arguing the ban on playing more than four seasons in a five-year window is a monopolistic practice that deprives athletes of the opportunity to earn name, image and likeness compensation.
