Iraq activates TIR system boosting international trade & security says IRU head
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Iraq officially launched the TIR international road transport system on Tuesday (June 3, 2025), a move hailed by the International Road Transport Union (IRU) as a strong signal of the country's openness to secure international business. IRU Secretary-General Umberto de Pretto attended the activation ceremony in Baghdad.
De Pretto emphasized that the TIR system, which facilitates streamlined customs transit for goods, will significantly aid Iraq in international transport, an area where it previously lacked such agreements. TIR enables the Iraqi government and IRU to partner towards logistical integration, he stated, noting it acts like a visa for goods, allowing secure passage without repeated inspections.
He highlighted TIR's global success, having guaranteed €50 billion for customs authorities worldwide and seen a 400% increase in country membership in 2023-2024 due to its security benefits. 'Iraq joining TIR sends a powerful message that Iraq is open for business securely… a stable and secure country striving for a prosperous economy,' de Pretto added.
The activation of TIR in Iraq is seen as vital for enhancing trade, improving logistics, and boosting economic integration.

Emirates to resume flights to Baghdad and Basra in early July
Baghdad ( – Emirates Airlines will resume its passenger flights to Iraq next week, with services to Baghdad restarting on July 1 and to Basra on July 2. The move comes after a temporary suspension caused by regional airspace closures and heightened tensions between Iran and Israel earlier in June. Iraq holds strategic importance for Emirates as a key market in its Middle East network. Baghdad, the capital and economic center, and Basra, Iraq's main port city, serve as vital links for trade, business, and regional connectivity. Prior to the suspension, Emirates operated multiple weekly flights to Iraq, with up to four flights per week to Baghdad alone, reflecting the strong demand for travel between the two countries. The recent escalation in the region had led to widespread flight disruptions, including the closure of Iraqi airspace, forcing Emirates and other major carriers to suspend operations temporarily. The resumption of flights marks a return to stability and underscores Emirates' commitment to maintaining connectivity with Iraq.

Iraq secures $930 million from World Bank to modernize railways
Baghdad ( – The World Bank has approved $930 million in financing to upgrade Iraq's railway network, aiming to improve trade, create jobs, and support economic diversification. The Iraq Railways Extension and Modernization (IREM) Project will overhaul 1,047 kilometers of rail lines from Umm Qasr Port to Mosul via Baghdad, cutting travel time, increasing freight volumes, and expanding access to sustainable transport. The investment supports Iraq's broader Development Road initiative, which seeks to turn the country into a key trade corridor linking the Gulf to Europe through Turkey. Years of underfunding and disrepair have left Iraq's railway system struggling, making this upgrade critical to improving national and regional connectivity. The project includes modernizing infrastructure, refurbishing locomotives, rebuilding the Baiji maintenance facility, and improving safety standards. It also aims to involve the private sector in building dry ports and logistics hubs, while generating thousands of skilled jobs. An international firm will assist in managing implementation to ensure capacity building and efficiency. By 2037, the revitalized railway is expected to transport over 6 million tons of freight and nearly 3 million passengers annually, benefiting 17 million people across eight governorates. The shift from trucks to trains is expected to reduce road damage and cut maintenance costs. Over 3,000 construction jobs will be created during implementation, with nearly 22,000 annual jobs projected by 2040 as operations expand.
