ASML's 2026 growth outlook hinges on Q2 bookings

VELDHOVEN : Investors are hoping that ASML's bookings are robust enough to support its 2026 growth ambitions when the world's biggest chip-making equipment supplier reports its second-quarter (Q2) earnings tomorrow.
The Dutch firm has lost around 30% in market value since peaking one year ago, reflecting investor concern over its growth prospects.
At an investor event last November, the maker of the EUV machine – the backbone of AI chipmaking – said it saw 2026 as a growth year but didn't specify how much growth it anticipated.
Analysts see the Q2 as a 'make or break' period which will determine its outlook for 2026, considering delivery times typically take around 12 months.
'ASML would need to double our Q2 order estimates (of €5.3 billion) to comfort our 2026 revenue forecast,' Barclays analyst Simon Coles told Reuters.
Analysts, on average, expect Q2 bookings to reach €4.44 billion, according to a consensus compiled by researcher Visible Alpha, and €21.3 billion for the full year.
TSMC, China demand
Hitting those forecasts depends largely on orders from the world's top contract chipmaker TSMC, analyst Marc Hesselink of ING said.
The company, which is also ASML's top customer, is expected to order the tools it needs for its upcoming manufacturing process, N2, this year.
'We see a better-than-expected demand and order from TSMC and China players, but lower-than-expected demand and order from Intel and Samsung,' said Kevin Wang, analyst at Mizuho.
'Positive news on talks with clients over future orders would also offer reassurance that it will meet current market forecasts,' said Hesselink.
ASML still has a long way to go in 2025 to fulfill booking expectations for its lithography systems, after net bookings, the industry's most closely watched figure, came in at €3.9 billion (US$4.6 billion) in the first quarter, missing estimates, analysts said.
Its earnings will provide a gauge of the resilience of China's chipmakers, which have been buying lower-end ASML equipment not impacted by export restrictions.
That demand helped the company beat first-quarter forecasts.
Last October, ASML projected Chinese orders would fall to a 20% share of all machine sales in 2025.
In fact, they constituted 27% of machine sales, steady from a quarter earlier.
Analysts expect that trend to continue unless US export curbs are further extended to apply to the older equipment.

Global shares tumble after Trump's tariff salvo

The pan-European STOXX 600 fell 1.3%, taking its weekly fall to almost 2%. (AFP pic) LONDON : Global shares tumbled today after the US slapped dozens of trading partners with steep tariffs, while investors anxiously awaited US jobs data that could make or break the case for a Federal Reserve rate cut next month. The pan-European STOXX 600 fell 1.3%, taking its weekly fall to almost 2%, which would be its biggest weekly drop since US President Donald Trump announced so-called reciprocal tariffs on April 2. Both Nasdaq futures and S&P 500 futures were down around 1%. Late yesterday, Trump signed an executive order imposing tariffs ranging from 10% to 41% on US imports from foreign countries and territories. Rates were set at 25% for India's US-bound exports, 20% for Taiwan's, 19% for Thailand's and 15% for South Korea's. He also increased duties on Canadian goods to 35% from 25% for all products not covered by the US-Mexico-Canada trade agreement, but gave Mexico a 90-day reprieve from higher tariffs to negotiate a broader trade deal. 'The Aug 1 announcement on reciprocal tariffs is somewhat worse than expected,' said Wei Yao, research head and chief economist in Asia at Societe Generale. Market reaction was not as volatile as April's global asset declines, she added. 'We are all getting much more used to the idea of 15-20% tariffs being manageable and acceptable, thanks to the worse threats earlier.' MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan fell 1.5%, bringing the total loss this week to roughly 2.7%. Japan's Nikkei closed 0.7% lower, Chinese blue chips ended 0.5% down and Hong Kong's Hang Seng index lost more than 1%. Yesterday, Wall Street failed to hold onto an earlier rally. Data showed US inflation picked up in June, with new tariffs pushing prices higher and stoking expectations that price pressures could intensify, while weekly jobless claims signalled the labour market remained on a stable footing. Fed funds futures imply just a 45% chance of a rate cut in September, compared with 65% before the Federal Reserve held rates steady on Wednesday, according to LSEG data. Much now will depend on the US jobs data due later in the day, and any upside surprise could price out the chance for a cut next month. Forecasts are centred on a rise of 110,000 in nonfarm payrolls in July. 'Fed chair Jay Powell has placed greater emphasis on the unemployment rate, which is expected to rise marginally from 4.1% to 4.2%,' said ING FX strategist Francesco Pesole. 'Hardly enough to sound the alarm on the jobs market.' The greenback found support from fading prospects of imminent US rate cuts, with the dollar index up 1.5% this week against its peers to 100, in the biggest weekly rise since September 2022. The yen weakened past 150 per dollar for the first time since April. The Bank of Japan held interest rates steady yestersday and revised up its near-term inflation expectations, but governor Kazuo Ueda sounded a little dovish in the press conference. Two-year treasury yields fell one basis point to 3.9449%, while benchmark 10-year yields rose 3 basis points to 4.388%, after slipping 2 bps the day before. In commodity markets, oil prices continued to fall after a 1% plunge yesterday. Brent fell 1% to US$70.97 per barrel, while US crude fell 1% to US$68.53 per barrel. Spot gold rose 0.3% to US$3,298 an ounce.

Napoli's Osimhen completes €75mil move to Galatasaray

Victor Osimhen scored 26 goals in 30 appearances while on loan at Galatasaray, helping secure their 25th Turkish league crown. (EPA Images pic) ISTANBUL : Napoli striker Victor Osimhen on Thursday completed his permanent move to Turkish champions Galatasaray in a €75 million (US$87.5 million) four-year deal. A key figure in Napoli's 2023 title triumph, Osimhen spent last season on loan at Galatasaray, scoring 26 goals in 30 league games as the Istanbul club claimed their 25th Super Lig crown. He was absent as Napoli, the freshly crowned Serie A champions, resumed training at the start of the week as the finer details of the deal were concluded. Napoli coach Antonio Conte seemingly did not have the 26-year-old in his plans for his side's Scudetto defence next term. Negotiations with Galatasaray had been ongoing for several weeks but up to Thursday had stalled over the terms of payment for the transfer. Napoli recently recruited Kevin De Bruyne from Premier League club Manchester City. Osimhen becomes Galatasaray's most expensive ever player.
