Pakistani TikToker Sumeera Rajput found dead, daughter alleges murder over forced marriage pressure

Indian Express26-07-2025
Pakistani TikTok influencer Sumeera Rajput was found dead under suspicious circumstances in her home in the Bago Wah area of Sindh's Ghotki district, in what is emerging as yet another case of violence against women content creators in the country.
According to Pakistani media house Geo News, the 15-year-old daughter of the deceased has alleged that her mother was murdered by individuals who had been coercing her into a forced marriage for a long time. She claimed Sumera was poisoned with tablets that ultimately led to her death.
While two suspects have been taken into custody, police are yet to file a First Information Report (FIR). Authorities say they are currently investigating whether foul play was involved.
The case has renewed concerns over the growing number of attacks targeting women influencers in Pakistan — a pattern of gendered violence that has persisted despite public outrage.
Sumera had over 58,000 followers and more than a million likes on TikTok. Her death comes just a month after another young TikToker, 17-year-old Sana Yousaf, was shot dead in Islamabad.
Sana, who had amassed over 500,000 followers across TikTok and Instagram, was shot at her home by a man who had allegedly been harassing her for months. The accused, 22-year-old Umar Hayat, reportedly killed her after she rejected his repeated 'offers of friendship.'
The killing sparked a wave of outrage online, with hashtags like #JusticeForSanaYousaf trending on social media platforms such as X and Instagram.
Born on June 2, 2008, in Upper Chitral, Sana came from a family of activists and was celebrated for her bold content that blended Chitrali folk culture with advocacy for girls' education and women's rights. A first-year medical student, she was seen as a rising voice challenging conservative gender norms in Pakistan.
Sumera and Sana's deaths are the latest in a growing list of women influencers who have faced violence — often from within their own families or communities.
In January, a 15-year-old was allegedly murdered by her father and maternal uncle in Quetta for refusing to give up TikTok. Both men were arrested and confessed, ARY News reported.
The pattern is reminiscent of the 2016 murder of social media icon Qandeel Baloch, who was strangled by her brother in a so-called honour killing that drew global condemnation and ignited a national conversation about women's safety and freedom in Pakistan.

Pahalgam Attacker's Symbolic Funeral In PoK Confirms Pakistan's Link To Attack: Report

Last Updated: The event further confirmed Islamabad's hand in the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed the lives of 26 people in Jammu and Kashmir. The symbolic funeral (Janaza-Ghaib) for Tahir Habib (Jibran), one of the Pahalgam terrorists killed in Operation Mahadev in Jammu and Kashmir, was recently held in his native village of Khai Gala in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), reported The Times of India. The event further confirmed Islamabad's hand in the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed the lives of 26 people in Jammu and Kashmir. Footage posted on Telegram shows villagers, including elderly locals, gathering for final prayers in memory of Habib, a former Pakistani soldier and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operative. Tahir, designated as a Category 'A' terrorist, had been a key target for Indian security agencies due to his role in cross-border militancy. His death, along with two others in Srinagar last week in Operation Mahadev, marked a significant success for Indian forces. However, the ceremony took an unexpected turn when local Lashkar commander Rizwan Hanif attempted to attend. According to eyewitnesses, the family rejected the presence of LeT operatives, but Hanif persisted, resulting in a tense exchange. 'Lashkar operatives threatened mourners with a gun, sparking outrage among villagers. The residents of Khai Gala, who have long been wary of radicalisation, are now planning a public boycott to oppose terror recruitment," a source familiar with the incident said. The tensions surrounding Habib's funeral reflect not just local resentment against terror groups, but also the broader reach of India's retaliatory operations like Operation Sindoor, aimed at dismantling cross-border terror networks in the aftermath of the Pahalgam massacre. Under 'Operation Mahadev,' Indian forces on July 28 neutralised three Pakistani terrorists in the Lidwas forest near Harwan, on the outskirts of Srinagar. According to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the three were behind the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that claimed the lives of 26 people. Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Shah identified one of the slain terrorists as Suleiman, the key planner of the attack. The others were named Afghan and Jibran (Tahir Habib) — all senior operatives of Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Punjab: Man held for issuing life threat to son of Congress MP Randhawa

The Batala police on Saturday arrested a man for allegedly issuing a death threat to Udhayveer Singh Randhawa, son of Congress MP from Gurdaspur, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa. Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Suhail Qasim Mir said the arrest followed a complaint filed by MP Randhawa earlier this week. 'The MP's son uploaded a video on his Instagram account around 3 pm on July 31. In response, a user operating under the name 'Gagan Randhawa' left a threatening comment, which was subsequently deleted,' he said. The suspect, identified as Gagandeep Singh of Ghaniye Ke Bangar village, currently residing at Gulmarg Avenue in Amritsar, was apprehended early Saturday morning. The suspect, identified as Gagandeep Singh of Ghaniye Ke Bangar village, currently residing at Gulmarg Avenue in Amritsar, was apprehended early Saturday morning. Digital tracking and technical surveillance, with support from Instagram's law enforcement team, helped trace the IP address and login credentials linked to the threatening account. 'During inspection of the accused's mobile phone, the Instagram account was found to be active and logged in. During questioning, the suspect claimed the comment was just a joke,' the SSP added. No direct connection has yet been established with gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, who is currently incarcerated in Assam's Silchar Jail, but cops are continuing investigation to uncover any potential link. An FIR (number 98/2025) was registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the IT Act at Kotli Surat Mallian police station. The SSP also highlighted the preventive measures already taken in relation to Bhagwanpuria. 'The jail administration in Silchar and the Narcotics Control Bureau have been formally informed multiple times to enforce strict surveillance and take action to prevent any form of illegal communication or directives from being issued from the jail,' he said. The arrest follows a public statement on Friday by MP Randhawa, alleging that his son had been threatened by Bhagwanpuria. The investigation remains ongoing.
