Japanese Man Arrested For Selling AI-Colourised Pirated 1954 "Godzilla" Film
OSAKA (Japan), June 17 (Bernama-Kyodo) -- A man in Osaka Prefecture has been arrested for allegedly selling a pirated version of the 1954 black-and-white film "Godzilla," which he apparently colourised using artificial intelligence, Kyodo News Agency reported, citing police on Tuesday.
Ippei Miyamoto, a 66-year-old part-time worker, is accused of having sold the DVD -- which features the iconic fire-breathing, city-stomping giant reptilian monster -- for 2,980 yen (US$21) to a man in Tokyo last November.
Police suspect Miyamoto used AI-equipped software to add colour and produce the DVD.

Miyamoto, who was arrested on Monday, has admitted to the charge, saying, "I sold it knowing it was a crime."
He is also believed to have sold about 1,500 fake DVDs, ranging from 3,000 yen to 30,000 yen, on online flea market websites from January 2024 to May 2025, earning at least 1.7 million yen, according to the police.
He had advertised the films as being "legal" and "masterpieces coloured by AI."
Toho Co., which distributes and owns the copyright to the long-running Godzilla franchise, filed a complaint with the police in February this year, leading authorities to search Miyamoto's house on Monday and confiscate about 70 DVDs.
The Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan, of which Toho is a member, said that it has been aware that pirated colour copies of films had been circulating and vowed to strengthen its watch over unauthorised production.

KUALA LUMPUR, July 21 (Bernama) -- The Local Government Department (JKT) will issue standard operating procedures (SOPs) to local authorities (PBTs) to ensure uniform implementation of court-ordered community service sentences for individuals convicted of littering in public areas. Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming said the SOPs will be introduced following the passing of the Local Government (Amendment) Bill 2025 in the Dewan Rakyat today, to ensure effective implementation of the law while upholding social justice for all offenders. Nga added that capacity building is important for PBT officers, especially when dealing with young offenders. 'They must fully understand not only the provisions under the Local Government Act 1976 (Act 171) but also the Child Act 2001 (Act 611), which has been taken into account in the ministry's implementation plan to ensure effective legal enforcement,' he said when winding up the debate on the Bill. The Bill was passed by a majority voice vote after being debated by eight Members of Parliament from both the government and opposition blocs. The amendment introduces a new Subsection 104A(1), which empowers the courts to order individuals convicted of breaching by-laws under Act 171 to perform up to 12 hours of community service, in addition to any fines imposed. Subsection 104A(3) provides that authorised PBT officers shall determine the time and place for carrying out the community service once a court order is issued. Meanwhile, Subsection 104A(8) states that if the offender is under the age of 18, provisions under Act 611 regarding community service orders will apply. Nga further said the ministry has outlined several strategies to enhance the effectiveness of the law, including increasing the number of authorised PBT officers for enforcement and monitoring purposes.

'The video appears to show Sultan Ibrahim giving a speech regarding an offer of financial assistance to Malaysians and urging people experiencing financial hardship to contact a person named 'Datuk Zulkarnain'.

KUALA LUMPUR: Fugitive financier Low Taek Jho, better known as Jho Low, is reportedly living in luxury in China under unofficial protection, according to fresh claims by investigative journalists Bradley Hope and Tom Wright. Speaking in their podcast, Finding Jho Low, which aired on Friday, the authors of Billion Dollar Whale revealed that Low is allegedly residing in Shanghai's upscale Green Hills neighbourhood and operating under a forged Australian passport using the alias "Constantinos Achilles Veis." They claimed that former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak had allegedly advised Low to flee the country as scrutiny of the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) scandal intensified, prompting him to escape to China where he had familial ties in the Chiuchow region. "Despite being a fugitive, he is living comfortably, driving luxury cars and accompanied by Chinese security guards. It appears he is not under house arrest but enjoying an unrestricted life," Hope said in the podcast. Hope and Wright, who spent years tracking Low's global movements, also alleged that Malaysia lost as much as US$6 billion (RM28 billion) in Belt and Road Initiative-linked projects that were engineered with Low's involvement, mirroring the pattern of financial manipulation seen in the 1MDB scandal.
