Red Sox Predicted to Land Dominant Left-Handed Power Hitter in MLB Draft
In ESPN's latest mock draft, where MLB insiders make the picks, the Boston Red Sox are predicted to land Andrew Fischer 34th overall, a corner infielder from the University of Tennessee.

Kiley McDaniel of ESPN says Fischer combines advanced power and plate discipline, making him an ideal fit for Boston's youth movement.
"Fischer is getting buzz all over the 20s and also likely won't last this long [34] on draft day," McDaniel said.
In 271 at-bats with Tennessee this season, Fischer hit .341 with a monster .497 on-base percentage. He racked up 25 homers (good for third in NCAA DI), 65 RBIs, and 63 walks across 65 games played. Oh, and his OPS was a whopping 1.257.

"Fischer's signature tool is his plus power that works to all fields, the product of a left-handed swing with bat speed and loft," MLB.com's prospect profile says. "He showed that he can launch balls in the air with wood bats last summer in the Cape Cod League."

His ability to dominate in arguably the best conference in college baseball (SEC) could put the 21-year-old higher on many draft boards than where the Red Sox are being projected to take him, 34th overall. After all, MLB.com's prospect rankings for the upcoming draft have Fischer ranked 29th.
With Triston Casas injured, it remains to be seen where Fischer would land with a healthy lineup. The Tennessee product can play either corner infield spot and could even be a designated hitter if his hitting develops to that level. The addition of Fischer would bring a big-time power bat to Boston sooner than some may think.

Mets Land Red Sox Superstar Alex Bregman in Blockbuster Trade Scenario
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. After losing 14 of 18 games, the New York Mets clearly need a boost, especially to their offense. Bleacher Report's Zachary D. Rymer thinks Alex Bregman can provide it. The Athletic's Jim Bowden recently noted that he would not be surprised if Bregman gets traded if he and the Boston Red Sox cannot work out an extension before the July 31 trade deadline. FORT MYERS, FLORIDA - FEBRUARY 16: Alex Bregman #2 of the Boston Red Sox looks on during his introductory press conference at JetBlue Park at Fenway South in Fort Myers, Florida on February 16, 2025. Maddie Malhotra/BostonBregman and his agent, Scott Boras, have noted that they are open to discussing an extension, according to MassLive's Chris Cotillo. However, if the Red Sox realize that the two sides are too far apart, and that they won't be able to afford Bregman, they may trade him before he eventually opts out of his deal at the end of the year. Rymer proposed this trade that would bring Bregman to Queens to help the Mets chase a World Series: Mets receive: 3B Alex Bregman Red Sox receive: DH Starling Marte and RHP Nolan McLean (Mets' No. 4 prospect) Mark Vientos and Brett Baty have both struggled at third base this year. Vientos had a great season last year, but has not met the high expectations the Mets had for him. Perhaps he can turn things around after his return from injury, but the Mets could feel some urgency to win this year before potentially losing Pete Alonso next winter. Bregman was slashing .299/.385/.553 with 11 home runs before his quad injury. If the Red Sox fall out of contention and they realize an extension may not be in the cards, the Mets could capitalize. Mets' Buttó goes on 15-day injured list with unspecified illness. Senga to make rehab start Saturday
NEW YORK (AP) — New York Mets reliever José Buttó was put on the 15-day injured list Friday with an unspecified illness. 'We're not going to get into the details of it out of respect of Buttó, but we don't anticipate this being a long term,' Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said. 'We expect him to be back right after the All-Star break.' Mendoza said he didn't anticipate that Buttó will need to go on a minor league injury rehabilitation assignment. A 27-year-old right-hander, Buttó is 2-1 with a 2.47 ERA in 31 relief appearances, the last a two-inning outing at Pittsburgh last Saturday. New York recalled right-hander Chris Devenski from Triple-A Syracuse. Brought up for the fourth time this season, the 34-year-old right-hander has made four appearances for the Mets. Right-hander Kodai Senga, sidelined since June 12 by a strained right hamstring, is to start a rehab assignment Saturday with Double-A Binghamton. He is to throw 60-65 pitches, according to Mendoza, and soon could return to New York's injury-ravaged rotation. 'We'll see how it goes tomorrow and then see how he responds and we'll have a decision after that,' Mendoza said. New York didn't have an update on reliever Dedniel Núñez, who was put on the IL on Thursday because of a sprained right elbow sprain and could require Tommy John surgery for the second time. 'He's going to to visit a doctor next week because of a holiday weekend,' Mendoza said. ___ AP MLB:
