Tata Play drops Sony channels from packs

Time of India21-05-2025
Mumbai : Direct-to-home (DTH) operator Tata Play has begun removing Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI) channels from its subscriber packs, reviving a standoff with the broadcaster similar to last year's, multiple sources told ET.According to one source, SPNI is demanding a 10–15% increase in annual subscription fees from Tata Play—a proposal the latter is resisting amid ongoing challenges such as customer churn and stagnant average revenue per user (ARPU).Tata Play has 18 million subscribers while SPNI has 27 linear TV channels across entertainment and sports. The overall lack of subscriber growth is straining the relationship between broadcasters and distribution platforms, putting pressure on their revenues.
Another source said Tata Play is reducing subscription pack prices by ₹15–20 for affected customers. Typically, broadcasters and distribution platforms renew content deals annually in April.
While SPNI did not respond to ET's queries, Tata Play said the move is part of a routine exercise to optimise packs based on user behaviour. The company noted that customers can choose to reinstate the dropped channels if they wish.
Under
Telecom Regulatory Authority of India
(TRAI) guidelines, distribution platforms must offer TV channels on an à la carte basis even if those channels are removed from bundled packs.
'Pack downgrading along with corresponding drop in price is an ongoing process at Tata Play, where certain channels are dropped for subscribers displaying frequent deactivation. These subscribers have the option of giving a missed call and reinstating the dropped channel instantly,' a Tata Play spokesperson said.
A senior media executive said distribution platforms often resort to tactics such as dropping channels from subscription packages during negotiations. 'Ultimately, both sides are dependent on each other for survival, so a resolution is inevitable,' he added.
A senior executive at a distribution platform pointed out that regular price hikes by broadcasters are making linear TV less attractive compared to streaming services, many of which are bundled with mobile data and broadband plans.
'Content cost already accounts for over 50% of a distribution platform's expenses and continues to go up every year even as customer churn is a reality,' said the executive.
During the earnings call on May 8,
Zee Entertainment
deputy CEO Mukund Galgali had stated that the Q4 subscription revenue remained flat Q-o-Q due to a slowdown in the linear subscription, which was partially offset by the increase in digital subscription revenue.
This isn't the first time Tata Play has modified its offering in relation to SPNI.
In August last year, a similar removal took place, with the company attributing the decision to declining viewership of Sony Entertainment Television (SET), SPNI's flagship Hindi general entertainment channel.
After reaching an amicable resolution, SPNI channels were reintroduced across all packs.
Broadcasters such as JioStar, Zee Entertainment, and SPNI have recently raised their bouquet rates by over 10%, with JioStar—which emerged from the merger of Star India and Viacom18—implementing an 18% hike.
However, distribution platforms say they are unable to pass the full increase on to subscribers due to pricing sensitivity.
"The broadcasters are taking the price up a bit. But yes, we are seeing how we can accommodate that and how we can pass very small costs to the customer side. As you know, the market is still sensitive,"
GTPL Hathway
chief strategy officer Piyush Pankaj had said during the Q4 earnings call.

So Long Valley Producer Files Rs 10 Crore Defamation Suit Against Ruchi Gujjar

Last Updated: Filmmaker Man Singh filed a Rs 10 crore defamation lawsuit against Ruchi Gujjar, accusing her of disrupting the premiere of his film So Long Valley and causing a public scene. Filmmaker Man Singh, who has both directed and produced the recently released crime thriller So Long Valley, has filed a Rs 10 crore defamation lawsuit against actress Ruchi Gujjar. The legal move comes after a dramatic disruption during the film's premiere. Singh alleges that this was orchestrated to damage the project's reputation and hinder its success. The case accuses Gujjar of a coordinated attempt to sabotage the film. According to an official statement from the production, Gujjar is said to have paid Rs 20–30 lakh to an associate, Karan Chauhan, and allegedly pressured other cast members to withdraw from the film. Furthermore, she reportedly tried to halt the release altogether by approaching the court. However, the court rejected her plea, ruling that she had no contractual or financial ties with the production and thus no grounds to intervene. The matter escalated at the film's premiere on July 25, when Gujjar allegedly caused a public scene. She is reported to have thrown a sandal and a water bottle at Man Singh during the screening event. The Amboli Police subsequently registered an FIR against her and six others. In the video, Gujjar was heard screaming while arguing with the producers. She then lost her cool and hit one of the producers with her chappal. It appears that she arrived at the theatre with the intention of staging a protest. During the special screening, where the producers were present, Ruchi showed up along with a group of protestors. People around her were seen raising slogans against the producers. They held placards with the producers' photos, marked with red cross signs across their faces. In some of the posters, which can be seen in the video, the producers were depicted sitting on donkeys. Take a look at the now-viral videos here: View this post on Instagram A post shared by Bollywood News (@bolly_newssss) View this post on Instagram A post shared by SpotlightBollywood (@spotlightbolly) According to Ruchi, Chauhan had approached her last year claiming he was producing a Hindi television serial that would soon air on Sony TV. 'He offered to add me as a co-producer and also sent documents related to the project," she said, according to media reports. Believing the offer, Ruchi stated that between July 2023 and January 2024, she transferred several payments from her company, SR Event and Entertainment, into accounts linked to Chauhan's K Studios. However, the promised project never took off. 'Despite repeated contacts, he kept postponing them and lied," she added in her complaint. She claims to have discovered that the funds were allegedly used not for the serial, but for the production of So Long Valley. 'When I got the information that the film is releasing on July 27, I told him to return my money now, on which he started threatening me," she alleged. Speaking to the media after the incident, Singh condemned the actress's actions, stating, 'The movie has faced a major financial impact and negative publicity due to such false allegations and threats by Ruchi." He also claimed that she attempted to intimidate both actors and service vendors involved in the project despite lacking any formal association with the film. 'Our legal team has filed a ₹10 crore defamation claim against her," Singh confirmed, adding that further legal measures are being reviewed. His legal representatives echoed this, stating that proceedings have already begun and additional actions may follow. So Long Valley, starring Tridha Choudhury, Akanksha Puri, and Man Singh, hit cinemas on July 25. First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Inside Sanjay Dutt's Rs 295 cr life: Rs 40 cr Mumbai home near Shah Rukh Khan, Dubai mansion, global chai business and luxe car collection worth crores

Sanjay Dutt is one of the most well-known faces in the Hindi film industry and has seen various ups and downs in his 44-year-long career in films. Being the son of legendary actors Sunil Dutt and Nargis, all eyes were on Sanjay when he made his debut in 1981 with Rocky. Since then, Sanjay has delivered several iconic films — Vaastav, Kaante, Khal Nayak, Munna Bhai MBBS series and more. But films are not his only source of income. The actor has invested in multiple businesses and also owns properties in Mumbai and Dubai. Here's a look at his net worth and his lifestyle: Sanjay Dutt owns a prized home in Mumbai's posh locality of Pali Hill, Bandra. He is the neighbour of several Bollywood A-listers including Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Rekha, Farhan Akhtar and many more. The building — Imperial Heights — where Sanjay used to live with his wife Maanayata and their twins, Shahraan and Iqra, before shifting to Dubai, was constructed on the land where his parents — Sunil and Nargis — once had their bungalow named Ajanta. The bungalow was eventually demolished to make way for a high-rise building, which was named Imperial Heights. Along with Sanjay Dutt, his sisters — Priya and Namrata Dutt — also own flats in the same building. According to a report in The Times of India, the cost of Sanjay Dutt's apartment is approximately Rs 40 crore. Sanjay Dutt shifted to Dubai before 2020. The actor revealed that he moved there after his wife started her business in the UAE and their kids enjoyed living there. He told Times Of India, 'They love it there. They like their school and their activities. My wife's business has settled there. Sending them there wasn't a planned move. It just happened on its own. Maanayata was doing her own business in Dubai, it clicked and she went, and the kids went with her.' Sanjay Dutt keeps shuttling between Mumbai and Dubai to balance his work commitments in India and family life in the UAE. While the exact cost of his Dubai mansion isn't available in the public domain, Maanayata frequently shares glimpses of their luxurious home on social media. Decorated with paintings, luxurious chandeliers, leather sofas, a huge white kitchen and a swimming pool, the property reflects their global lifestyle. He co-owns B-Love Kandy, a franchise cricket team that competed in the 2023 Lanka Premier League. According to GQ, he invested Rs 4 crore in the startup DawnTown, a sneakers and streetwear retailer. He also holds stakes in Cyber Media India. Most recently, he partnered with alcohol manufacturer Cartel & Bros to launch his own Scotch whisky brand, The Glenwalk. A post shared by Dawntown (@dawntownclothing) In addition to his business investments, Sanjay Dutt owns two production houses — Sanjay Dutt Productions and Three Dimension Motion Pictures. His banner recently backed the multi-starrer Bhootni. However, unlike his acting career, Dutt hasn't tasted much success as a producer, and most of his projects have failed to perform at the box office. In December last year, Sanjay Dutt forayed into the culinary space with the launch of Dutts' Franktea in Dubai, an online-only chai and street food brand. A post shared by Maanayata Dutt (@maanayata) The Khal Nayak star is known for his taste in luxury automobiles. According to reports, his collection includes some of the most premium cars in the market — Rolls-Royce Ghost (Rs 6.95–7.95 crore), Land Rover Range Rover Autobiography (Rs 2.99 crore), Audi R8 (Rs 2.72 crore), Ferrari 599 GTB (Rs 1.3 crore), and Audi Q7 (Rs 99.81 lakh). He also owns high-end motorcycles such as the Harley-Davidson Fat Boy (Rs 25.68 lakh) and a Ducati Multistrada (Rs 21.48–31.48 lakh). According to Financial Express, Sanjay Dutt's net worth is estimated to be around Rs 295 crore, with his successful acting career being the primary contributor.
