US targets Houthis with fresh sanctions action

The United States on Tuesday imposed sanctions on what it said was a Houthi-linked petroleum smuggling and sanctions evasion network, in fresh action targeting the Iran-backed militant group. The action targets a network of individuals and their companies located across Yemen and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the US Treasury Department said in a statement. The Department said that the two individuals and five entities sanctioned on Tuesday were among the most significant importers of petroleum products and money launderers that benefit the Houthis. 'The Houthis collaborate with opportunistic businessmen to reap enormous profits from the importation of petroleum products and to enable the group's access to the international financial system,' said Deputy Secretary of the Treasury Michael Faulkender. 'These networks of shady businesses underpin the Houthis' terrorist machine, and Treasury will use all tools at its disposal to disrupt these schemes.' Among those targeted on Tuesday was Muhammad al-Sunaydar, who the Treasury said manages a network of petroleum companies between Yemen and the UAE and was one of the most prominent petroleum importers in Yemen. Three companies in his network were also designated, with the Treasury saying they coordinated the delivery of approximately $12 million dollars' worth of Iranian petroleum products with a US-designated company to the Houthis. Since Israel's war in Gaza against the Palestinian militant group Hamas began in October 2023, the Iran-aligned Houthis have been attacking vessels in the Red Sea in what they say are acts of solidarity with the Palestinians. In January, Trump re-designated the Houthi movement as a foreign terrorist organization, aiming to impose harsher economic penalties in response to its attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea and against US warships defending the critical maritime area. In May, the United States announced a surprise deal with the Houthis where it agreed to stop a bombing campaign against them in return for an end to shipping attacks, though the Houthis said the deal did not include sparing Israel. The Israeli military attacked Houthi targets in Yemen's Hodeidah port on Monday in its latest assault on the militants, who have been striking ships bound for Israel and launching missiles against it.

Most Gulf bourses fall on US tariff concerns, weaker oil

BENGALURU: Most Gulf stock indexes dipped on Tuesday, as investors worried about fading prospects of the EU's trade deal with the US ahead of a looming tariff deadline, with weak oil prices offsetting strong corporate earnings. The EU is exploring broader counter-measures against the US as prospects of an acceptable trade agreement with Washington wane, according to EU diplomats. US President Donald Trump's imposition of tariffs around the world risks hurting global economic growth, and with it oil consumption. Dubai's main share index eased 0.3 percent, marking the third straight session of losses as investors remained cautious ahead of key earnings and locked in profits following a multi-year rally. Index heavyweight Dubai Islamic Bank dropped 1.2 percent while budget carrier Air Arabia fell over 3 percent, ending a five-session winning streak. In Abu Dhabi, the index was under pressure as a wave of earnings releases this week kept many investors on the sidelines. Qatar's stock index reversed early losses to finish 1.1 percent higher, reaching its highest level in more than two and a half years, as nearly all sectors advanced. Banking stocks led the advance, supported by strong earnings. Qatar Islamic Bank soared 6 percent, rising for a fourth straight session after reporting upbeat results. Outside the Gulf, Egypt's blue-chip index declined 1 percent, pulling back from a record high.

Abu Dhabi Airports sees 13% rise in passenger numbers despite airspace disruptions

JEDDAH: Abu Dhabi Airports handled more than 15.8 million passengers in the first half of 2025, up 13.1 percent from the previous six months, despite regional airspace disruptions. Zayed International Airport, the UAE's second-largest air base and a key international hub connected to over 120 passenger destinations, played a central role in the surge. It recorded 15.5 million passengers by the end of June — a 13.2 percent year-on-year increase, according to the UAE's official news agency WAM. The government-owned operator showed resilience, maintaining steady growth in both passenger traffic and flight movements despite regional disruptions caused by a 12-day conflict between Israel and Iran. The unrest led to airspace closures across the Gulf, including the UAE, resulting in flight suspensions and rerouting. Elena Sorlini, managing director and CEO at Abu Dhabi Airports, said: 'Consistently delivering positive growth for the past 17 quarters is testament to the dedication and collective effort of the entire Abu Dhabi Airports team.' She added: 'It reflects our operational agility and commitment to delivering an exceptional aviation experience and attracting international investors.' This increase in passenger traffic was accompanied by 133,533 total flights across the five airports in the first half of 2025, marking a 9.2 percent rise compared to the same period last year, according to the WAM report. Zayed International Airport recorded 93,858 aircraft movements during the first half, up 11.4 percent from 84,286 flights in the first six months of 2024. Etihad Airways temporarily halted some regional flights amid the tensions. Meanwhile, Wizz Air recently announced plans to exit Abu Dhabi from Sept. 1, citing geopolitical instability and airspace restrictions. Abu Dhabi Airports pushed ahead with network expansion, introducing 16 new destinations and onboarding several new airline partners in the first half of the year. These include China Eastern Airlines' four-times-weekly Shanghai service, which will become daily in September; Air Seychelles' six weekly flights; and Fly Cham's route to Damascus. Indian carrier IndiGo also added new services to Madurai, Bhubaneswar, and Visakhapatnam, making Zayed International its most connected hub in the UAE. Cargo volumes also rose, reaching 344,795 tonnes in the first half of the year, supported by infrastructure upgrades and growing trade flows through the emirate.
