IRCTC Got Over 6,000 Complaints On Poor Food Quality In 2024-25: Minister
In 2024-25, 6,645 complaints related to poor quality of food were reported by passengers, out of which in 1,341 cases fines were imposed on the food suppliers, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha on Friday.
Of the total, in 2,995 cases warnings were issued, in 1,547 cases suitable advisories were given and other measures were taken in the remaining 762 cases, Mr Vaishnaw said in the reply.
CPI(M) MP John Brittas raised the issues of food quality in trains and transparency in the award of contracts to companies.
When asked to provide details regarding instances of seizure of unhygienic food items from the railway caterers as well as complaints filed by passengers regarding the quality and safety of food served on trains in the last five years, the Railway Minister presented the data in a tabular form.
Mr Vaishnaw said, "Prompt and appropriate punitive action, including imposition of fines, disciplinary action, counselling, warning etc., is taken in case any instance of adulterated/unhygienic food or passenger complaint is reported." According to the data, in 2023-24, 2022-23, and 2021-22, the number of complaints received from passengers was 7,026, 4,421, and 1,082, respectively.
Mr Brittas asked "whether Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) awarded contracts across multiple railway routes, including Vande Bharat and other long-distance services, to a corporate group using multiple affiliate entities." In his reply, the Union minister said that the IRCTC regularly floats tenders to select service providers for the provision of onboard catering services in trains, including Vande Bharat and other long-distance trains.
"These tenders are awarded through a transparent process to the highest bidders as per the terms and conditions stipulated in the tender documents. The details of Letters of Award (LOA), issued to multiple service providers, are published on the website of IRCTC. At present, contracts of clusters of trains have been awarded by IRCTC to 20 entities," Mr Vaishnaw said.
He provided various measures taken to maintain food quality, such as the supply of meals from designated Base Kitchens, commissioning of modern Base Kitchens at identified locations, Installation of CCTV Cameras in Base Kitchens, shortlisting and use of popular and branded raw materials, deployment of Food Safety Supervisors at Base Kitchens to monitor food safety and hygienic practices among others.

Jabil investing ₹2,000 crore in manufacturing in India: Ashwini Vaishnaw
NEW DELHI: US-based Jabil 's plant in Sanand, Gujarat, is nearing completion, said Union Minister of Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw on Saturday. 'Jabil is investing more than ₹2,000 crore in manufacturing silicon photonics and electronic manufacturing services in India,' Vaishnaw said in a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday. 'Plant at Sanand is almost completed,' the minister added. Silicon photonics, which integrates light for high-speed communications in microelectronics, is set to cater to a wide array of sectors, including quantum computing, quantum communication, fifth-generation (5G) and 6G technologies, the Internet of Things (IoT), radar, and avionics. The American vendor had last year said that it is continuing to invest in silicon photonics-based products and capabilities, beyond 800G and 1.6T, to support the increasing demands of hyperscalers and next-wave cloud and AI data center growth. Jabil serves 300 of the biggest companies globally across sectors, including smartphones, cloud equipment, healthcare, to automotive and home appliances. It employs more than 1.4 lakh employees across 100 locations in over 25 countries. Swedish telecom gear maker Ericsson , via Jabil, manufactures 4G and 5G radios, RAN Compute as well as microwave equipment. Jabil is also a supplier to iPhone-maker Apple in India. Jabil Circuit , according to a recent PTI news agency report, has also emerged as the biggest beneficiary of the telecom production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme. It received ₹235.87 crore as an incentive in the two fiscal years FY23 and FY24. The Central government has disbursed ₹1,162 crore under the telecom PLI till March 31. This scheme, launched on April 1, 2021, aims to boost domestic manufacturing and self-reliance in the telecom sector. It will conclude by the end of the current fiscal year (FY26). Out of 42 companies shortlisted under the scheme, 21 manufacturers have successfully received the incentives so far. The government had earmarked ₹4,115 crore for the scheme to generate an estimated ₹2.45 lakh crore in additional sales and create over 44,000 new jobs during the tenure.

India's first hydrogen train is expected to launch by the end of 2025. (Representational) In a giant leap towards sustainable eco-friendly transportation, the Indian Railways has successfully completed the trial run of the country's first hydrogen train, which runs on hydrogen fuel cell technology, making it highly beneficial to the environment. The trial run took place at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, which has also developed indigenously developed the technology, according to Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The minister said that with completion of the test run, India has joined the select list of countries like Sweden, Germany, China and France, which have developed hydrogen fuel technology, adding that the country is now working to a build a 12oo horsepower (hp) hydrogen train. Which route will hydrogen train run on? According to details, during the trial run, the hydrogen-powered train traveled a distance of 89 km on the Jind-Sonipat rail section of Haryana, and it is believed that the eight-coach non-AC hydrogen train will commercially run on this Northern Railway route before the end of this year. The trains will have hydrogen-powered cars on both ends and ICF is preparing to deliver the first hydrogen locomotive by August 31, 2025. The train will run at an average speed of 110 km/h. How much will hydrogen train cost? In 2023, Vaishnaw had informed the Rajya Sabha that Railways Ministry plans to operate 35 hydrogen trains on heritage and hilly routes under the Hydrogen for Heritage initiative at a cost of around Rs 80 crore per train, while Rs 70 crore will be spent on preparing ground infrastructure in plain and hilly areas. The ministry has set aside a budget of Rs 2800 crore for the project, the minister had said. The current pilot project has a total cost of Rs 111.83 crore. Why hydrogen trains are the future? Hydrogen trains are extremely energy efficient and environment friendly when compared to conventional diesel and electric locomotives. Unlike traditional train sets, a hydrogen-powered train does not emit harmful gases like carbon dioxide as it uses hydrogen fuel cell technology to generate electricity which powers the train. The only byproducts of this chemical process are water and steam, which are completely harmless to the environment.

How many new trains has Centre introduced to improve regional connectivity in last one year?
Indian Railways new trains: Indian Railways (IR) is considered as the backbone of the national economy. In recent years, it has undertaken several initiatives to enhance connectivity, including the introduction of new trains, track doubling and expansion, and the construction of Road Over Bridges (ROBs) and Road Under Bridges (RUBs). Apart from these, the national transporter is also actively redeveloping stations across the country under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS). Since the railway network spans across state boundaries, train services are introduced based on operational requirements across various regions. This raise an interesting question: how many new trains have been introduced in the past year? The question surfaced after Rajya Sabha MP Medha Vishram Kulkarni asked Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for details on the number of new trains launched over the last year. She also sought information on how many trains pass through Maharashtra, particularly Pune city. In response, Vaishnaw on Friday (July 25, 2025) informed that Indian Railways introduced a total of 182 new train services during the period 2024–25 and 2025–26 (up to June 2025). With the launch of these new trains, the regional connectivity has improved further. 'To cater to the needs of passengers, IR, during 2024-2025 and 2025-2026 (upto June,2025 ) have introduced 182 train services of which the following 20 train services, on originating/Terminating basis, are catering to the needs of stations located in the State of Maharashtra…,' the minister added. The minister also stated that a new train will be introduced between Pune and Rewa. He also stated that CSMT-Jalna Vande Bharat train will be extended. '…it has also been decided to introduce a new train between Pune and Rewa [with commercial stoppages inter alia at Gondia, Nagpur, Wardha, Akola, Bhusaval, Manmad, Kopargaon, Ahmednagar, Daund] and to extend 20705/20706 Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj (T) – Jalna Vande Bharat Express (six days a week) upto Hazur Sahib Nanded,' he said. The Railway Minister also noted that Pune, Nasik and Aurangabad are presently being served by 291, 155 and 62 train services, respectively. 'Moreover, introduction of new train services is an ongoing process on Indian Railways subject to traffic justification, operational feasibility, resource availability, etc,' Vaishnaw added.
