Driver Wedges Dump Truck Under Highway Overpass After Forgetting to Lower Its Bed

A Florida man behind the wheel of a dump truck was unaware that the truck bed was raised. But don't worry, friends. An overpass reminded him.
Traveling northbound on Florida State Road 285, a 54-year-old man from nearby Crestview was in for an impactful drive. Somehow oblivious to the fact that the dump bed of his truck was in the 'up' position, the raised rear hit the underside of the Interstate 10 overpass as the truck drove underneath. Or attempted to.
According to WALA Fox 10 , the impact caused the bed to completely dislodge from the truck frame. The posted speed limit along that stretch is 55 mph, but it probably doesn't take much to behead something too tall for the ride.
And like a beacon of idiocy, the bed remained wedged and upright in the left lane of the two northbound lanes. A Florida Highway Patrol incident report noted that the dismembered truck bed stayed stuck for 'a short while,' said WKRG News 5 .
The incident occurred at 2:20 a.m. on Friday. Neither the driver nor his passenger was injured, but they're definitely a couple of lucky ducks. A similar incident last year (also in Florida) resulted in serious injuries to the driver. CDL Life reported that the dump truck veered off the highway and crashed into a wooded area. Another vehicle traveling behind was hit with the debris, but the driver was not hurt.

What Are The Blue Lights On Some Florida Traffic Signals Used For?

Drivers in certain areas of Florida like Gainesville, Fort Myers, Orlando, and Collier County, have begun noticing odd little blue lights mounted on the top of some traffic signals. What are they there for? In spite of what you or your passengers may have speculated, they have nothing to do with red light cameras. However, like traffic cameras, they play a role in catching drivers who run red lights. These little blue lights are called confirmation lights, and they are designed to help law enforcement officers to see from any direction which lights are red. For example, if a driver is going south, but the cop is facing in another direction, the officer wouldn't be able to see whether the driver's light was red when they entered the intersection. This is because a blue confirmation light, which is only illuminated when the signal below it is red, can be seen from any direction. There are a few potential benefits to installing these lights. For one thing, only one officer is needed to monitor an intersection instead of two. Additionally, it's less dangerous for police officers, since they can monitor entire intersections from a safe vantage point. Most importantly, it's hoped that an initial increase in citations will be a deterrent for drivers running red lights going forward. Read more: These Are The Cars Our Readers Wish Would Depreciate Faster Are The Blue Lights Working? Florida isn't the only state where these lights have been installed. Cities in Colorado, South Dakota, and Kansas have also installed these blue indicators. In fact, the Minnesota Department of Transportation conducted a safety study in 2014 on the impact of confirmation lights in Florida. Shortly thereafter, the little blue lights started popping up in Minnesota towns like Blaine, Crystal, and Maplewood. That study found that crashes caused by running red lights dropped by 33% after these confirmation lights were installed. Another study done by the Federal Highway Administration in 2017 stated that its results indicated "statistically significant crash reductions for most crash types". So, all signs seem to indicate the confirmation lights are working. This is important because, while traffic fatalities from all types of car crashes dropped slightly last year, red light running is a significant cause of traffic fatalities in the U.S. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), 1,086 people were killed and 136,000 were injured in 2023 in accidents that involved running of red lights. Pedestrians, bicyclists, and drivers and passengers in other vehicles made up half of the total fatalities. Don't Get Caught Running A Red Light In Florida What we really mean to say is don't run red lights, anywhere, regardless of your chance of getting caught. Running a red light can be fatal to you, your passengers, other drivers, and even pedestrians. That's not worth the couple of minutes you might save on your trip. If that's not enough incentive to obey traffic signals, consider the penalties if you do get caught. In Florida, being caught on camera running a red light will cost you a $158 fine. Failure to pay will result in a Uniform Traffic Citation being issued, and you may then have to pay up to $500, including administrative costs and court fees. However, if you are pulled over by an officer -- maybe one who saw the little blue confirmation light -- you're looking at upwards of $264, depending on the county, as well as points on your license. No matter how you look at it, there's no good reason to run a red light. So, drive safely and obey the traffic signals. Want more like this? FINALLY! Grover's Milton restaurant opening Thursday. Here's a sneak peek inside

The wait is over for Milton's new Grover's, which is set to open to the public at 6 a.m. on July 24 at 5614 Stewart St., following over a year of eager community anticipation. The sparkling new Milton restaurant will carry over the old-school diner feel of the original location, Grover's Fingers & Wings at 9418 N. Davis Highway, but now with a drive-thru, glittery cherry red booths, black-and-white checkered floors and quadruple the seating. Now that the new restaurant is finally gearing up to welcome customers inside, the original location will temporarily close for renovations beginning on July 23 to undergo a makeover to match the new store. They plan to reopen the Pensacola store as quickly as possible and will post updates on Grover's social media regarding the timeline. While the Milton restaurant was custom-built from the ground up, thanks to homebuilder Mike Price, who partnered with owner Michael Graham on the Milton restaurant, they didn't want to lose the old-fashioned feel that customers loved most, but rather enhance it. Grover's is a Pensacola fan-favorite: Pensacola's hidden gem, Grover's Fingers and Wings, not so hidden anymore The Milton menu will remain the same, with many options priced under $10, including their signature country-fried steak sandwich, Grover cheeseburger, or a half order of house-made biscuits and gravy. But doesn't an old-fashioned ice cream sundae taste better to the tune of a 1940s Wurlitzer jukebox? When creating the design, Graham and Price worked to enhance all the nostalgia the previous location offered, while offering upgrades, such as significantly expanding the kitchen space. The new restaurant features two separate kitchens: one for handling drive-thru orders and the other for in-house orders. While the layout mirrors the smaller Davis Highway store, it extends about 10 feet longer with twice the equipment so that customers can get their food fast. In addition to the vast array of seating inside, there will also be about 18 picnic tables to enjoy a sandwich or a sweet tea out on the front porch. To start, the restaurant will be open daily from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day, with plans to eventually transition into a 6 a.m. to midnight schedule. Once the longer hours take effect, breakfast items will be available all day, according to Graham. As Graham and Price make final preparations to welcome law enforcement and family inside for a first run on July 23, they look forward to welcoming the public on July 24 when they will switch the traffic light sign on the outside of the building from red to green.
