Belgium questions 2 Israelis at music festival over Gaza crime allegations
In a statement to The Associated Press, the Israeli Foreign Ministry said an Israeli citizen and an Israeli soldier who were on vacation in Belgium 'were taken in yesterday for interrogation and were released shortly afterward.' It said Israeli authorities 'dealt with this issue and are in touch with the two.'
It was not immediately clear why the Israeli Foreign Ministry referred to one civilian and one soldier, while Belgian prosecutors spoke of two Israeli army members. The whereabouts of the two people who were questioned was not immediately clear.
The case was hailed as a 'turning point in the global pursuit of accountability' by a Belgium-based group called the Hind Rajab Foundation, which has campaigned for the arrest of Israeli troops it accuses of war crimes and crimes against humanity. The group was named for a young girl who Palestinians say was killed early in the war by Israeli fire as she and her family fled Gaza City.
It isn't the first time an Israeli has been targeted overseas for legal action. In January, Israel helped a former soldier leave Brazil after legal action was initiated against him by the group, which uses geolocation and social media posts to identify soldiers they accuse of war crimes.
Since forming last year, the Hind Rajab Foundation has made dozens of complaints in more than 10 countries seeking the arrest of both low-level and high-ranking Israeli soldiers. It was not immediately clear if any soldiers have been arrested as a result of the group's actions. The group did not immediately respond to an email seeking details.
'We will continue to support the ongoing proceedings and call on Belgian authorities to pursue the investigation fully and independently,' the group said in its statement. 'Justice must not stop here — and we are committed to seeing it through.'
Israel says its forces follow international law and try to avoid harming civilians, and that it investigates allegations of wrongdoing.
In a written statement, the prosecutor's office said that the two army members — who were in Belgium for the Tomorrowland festival — were questioned after the office received legal complaints on Friday and Saturday from the Hind Rajab Foundation and another group. The prosecution office requested the questioning after an initial assessment of the complaints 'determined that it potentially had jurisdiction.'
The Hind Rajab foundation said it filed its complaints along with the rights group Global Legal Action Network.
The decision to question the two Israelis was based on an article in Belgium's Code of Criminal Procedure that went into force last year and grants Belgian courts jurisdiction over acts overseas that are potentially governed by an international treaty, in this case the 1949 Geneva Conventions and the 1984 United Nations convention against torture, the prosecution statement said.
'In light of this potential jurisdiction, the Federal Prosecutor's Office requested the police to locate and interrogate the two individuals named in the complaint. Following these interrogations, they were released,' the statement said, without elaborating.
It said it was not providing any further information at this stage of its investigation.
The European Jewish Association criticized Belgian authorities for acting on what it called a politically motivated complaint.
'These soldiers were carrying out their lawful duties in defense of their country, duties comparable to those of any soldier serving in a democratic nation,' the association said in a statement.
The news in Belgium came as the U.N. food agency accused Israel of using tanks, snipers and other weapons to fire on a crowd of Palestinians seeking food aid, in what the territory's Health Ministry said was one of the deadliest days for aid-seekers in over 21 months of war.
The death toll in war-ravaged Gaza has climbed to more than 59,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza's Health Ministry. Its count doesn't distinguish between militants and civilians but the ministry says more than half of the dead are women and children. The ministry is part of the Hamas government, but the U.N. and other international organizations see it as the most reliable source of data on casualties.

A Jewish group has called a UK council recognising 'friendship links' with an area of Gaza, 'an important act of solidarity' after local councillors voted for an immediate ceasefire. Last week, Hastings Borough Council, in east Sussex, passed a motion to back an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, an end to all arms sales to Israel and to support the town's friendship links with the people of Al-Mawasi – a section of the Gaza strip. The decision comes after multiple attempts over the past 21 months to bring a ceasefire motion prior to the recent local elections, which changed the make-up of the council. The motion was carried by a majority of 14 Green and Hastings Independent Group MPs, with three voting against and 11 abstentions, mostly from Labour councillors. Hastings Jews for Justice have welcomed the decision, they said: 'We stand with the Palestinians in Gaza who are being slaughtered and starved right now and we demand immediate action of our politicians. 'We applaud all the councillors who chose to stand on the right side of history and used their voice and their vote to fight these crimes against humanity. 'And we reject the idea, shared by several Labour councillors during the debate, that standing up for a people facing genocide is an attack on Jewish people in our community or 'divisive'.' Proposing the motion, Green Party councillor Yunis Smith said: 'We must ask ourselves, when the dust settles, will we have done enough? Will we be able to say that we stood up even when it was difficult? 'Or will we, like generations before us, say that we saw the signs and still we did nothing?' In December 2023, Al-Mawasi was designated a safe zone by the IDF and Palestinians were urged repeatedly to relocate to the area. Since then, the area has been repeatedly attacked, one of the most deadly was July 13 2024, where Israeli jets bombed Al-Mawasi, killing 90 people and injuring 300 displaced Palestinians, according to Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry. Hastings Friends of Al-Mawasi group has been building a friendship and language exchange with the Palestinian area over the past few years. Mr Smith said: 'From one coastal town to another, we've shown that solidarity, dignity and human connection shine brighter than cruelty, 'Al-Mawasi, like Hastings, is defined not just by its land but by the resilience of its people. They survive, endure and beckon us to witness their struggle and their strength.' Hastings has become the most recent in a line of UK councils to pass a motion calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. Hastings Jews for Justice added: 'This is an important act of solidarity with a people who are being made to suffer in the most horrific ways imaginable and we are determined to show that as British Jews it is not in our names.' The Green leader of the council, Councillor Glen Haffenden, has reportedly received more emails on this subject from his residents than on any other subject since becoming a councillor. Hastings campaign group Friends of Al-Mawasi says there has been a 'marked escalation of threatening and abusive behaviour' towards anyone in the town showing sympathy or support for Palestine over the past few weeks. Sussex Police have confirmed that an investigation is ongoing after a woman was allegedly assaulted while wearing a Keffiyah at the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill.

Kneecap slam 'outrageous' ban ahead of major music festival
Kneecap has taken aim at the Hungarian government for its 'outrageous' decision to ban them from the country. In recent months the Belfast-based rap group – which consists of Liam Og O hAnnaidh, Naoise O Caireallain, and JJ O Dochartaigh – has come under the spotlight, notably for their vocal support of Palestine. Last month Og O hAnnaidh, who performs as Mo Chara, faced Westminster Magistrates' Court after being charged with a terror offence. The 27-year-old has been accused of displaying a flag representing Hezbollah, a proscribed organisation at a gig last November. He has denied the charges. Then after their Glastonbury performance, in which O Caireallain suggested fans 'start a riot' outside his bandmate's upcoming court appearance, Avon and Somerset Police launched a probe into their set. Although it was announced last week that police had dropped their investigation, the band are again facing another hurdle. Kneecap had been due to play at Sziget Festival in Budapest next month. But earlier today Hungarian government spokesperson Zoltan Kovacs revealed they'd been banned from the country for three years. He said that the decision was made due to Kneecap members 'repeatedly engage in antisemitic hate speech supporting terrorism and terrorist groups'. 'Hungary has zero tolerance for antisemitism in any form. 'Their planned performance posed a national security threat, and for this reason, the group has been formally banned from Hungary for three years. If they enter, expulsion will follow under international norms.' A few hours later the band released a statement condemning the move. 'To the tens of thousands of fans who we were buzzing to see in person at Sziget, we're sorry we won't be with you,' they began. 'The authoritarian government of Viktor Orban say we 'pose a national security threat'.' They went on to write that claim was 'f***ing outrageous', adding that the Prime Minister had 'welcomed wanted war criminal Benjamin Netanyahu like a hero just a few weeks ago'. 'There is no legal basis for his actions, no member of Kneecap has ever been convicted of any crime in any country. We stand against all hate crimes and Kneecap champions love and solidarity as well as calling out injustices when we see it,' they continued. 'It's clear this is political distraction and a further attempt to silence those who call out genocide against the Palestinian people. 'Much like the good people of Budapest, who defied their own President's ban on their 'Pride Parade' in June, we will fight for what is right.' Festival organisers said the decision was 'unnecessary and regrettable' and could serve to 'not only damage the reputation of Sziget, but also negatively affect Hungary's standing worldwide'. 'Sziget Festival's values mean we condemn hate speech, while guaranteeing the fundamental right to artistic freedom of expression for every performer,' they wrote in a statement. 'Cancel culture and cultural boycotts are not the solution.' Kneecap, who were scheduled to play a set at Sziget's closing day on August 11, have faced the cancellation of several of their shows in the past few months, including the TRNSMT festival in Glasgow, the Eden Project in Cornwall, and Germany's Hurricane Festival and Southside Festival. Pervert doctor put semen in woman's coffee and kept grisly 'stash' for brews
Nicholas Chapman has been struck off the medical register (Image: Avon and Somerset Police / SWNS) A twisted doctor who put his own semen in a woman's coffee has been struck off the medical register with "immediate effect". Perverted Nicholas Chapman, 57, will now never work in the medical profession again due to the risk he poses to members of the public. The former GP, from Taunton, Somerset, was previously slapped with a community order for a sexual offence after a trial found he'd filled hundreds of 'specimen' samples, before pouring these into the hot drinks of his victim. Giving grim testimony, the victim shared how, after taking a sip of a "salty" tasting coffee, she would pour other beverages away, only to notice a "thick gloopy" substance in the sink. The disgraced GP slipped semen into his victim's drink (Image: SWNS) The victim recalled: "I did not know what it was. I did not suspect it could have been semen at that point. He was then bringing me more drinks - probably one to three cups of coffee a week. "Since that occasion, I tipped them away in the sink - seeing the sort of substance in the sink - it was different size and quantities each time. At least six times I've seen it - I've not drunk it since that first time." She added: "I remember the first time I saw stuff in the sink - he said, 'Did you notice something in your drink? I noticed something in mine, he said. Maybe that was the first time he did it, and wanted to know if I'd noticed. It tasted salty." One year later, in September 2021, she became suspicious once more after coming across Chapman's foul collection of "specimen pots". The victim shared: "I instantly suspected he had been putting semen in them and transporting them into my drink. I was in shock at that point. I noticed in this trouser pocket what looked like one of those bottles." The next time Chapman offered to make her a coffee, the victim "instantly felt ill", and was left "shaking that he had put something in it". This time, she took a sample of the "gloopy" drink straight to the police. Remembering her nerves, she continued: "I felt very jumpy and worried he would catch me with this cup. I put the cup into a bag and dropped the sample off (to the police)." It tested positive for Chapman's semen. The formerly respected doctor attempted to claim that someone else had put his semen sample in the coffee as a 'prank' (Image: SWNS) Chapman, who trained at the University of Cape Town in his home country of South Africa, was arrested after arriving at work. He was then suspended from his position at the Somerset-based health centre, once the allegations came to light. The former doctor had attempted to claim that the collection of samples was due to a "secret" condition that saw him discharge semen during defecation. Although he acknowledged there were at least 10-12 "collections" a month and 140 collections a year that were not flushed down the toilet, he insisted that his masturbation, including at work, had "nothing to do with pleasure - but a painful necessity." Alleging that another person must have put these in the coffee as a "prank that went horribly wrong", Chapman argued: "I don't know why someone did that with my sample - I don't know why someone did it or why." When quizzed as to why he did not seek help for his issue or why there was no note of this on his medical records, Chapman told the court: "GPs are often really bad at managing themselves. However, this defence was dismissed as "absurd". At the trial, the victim also described how "letchy" Chapman had shown her photographs on his phone of his "erect penis" on at least two occasions. She stated: "I thought (the first time) it was a mistake and he must be really embarrassed. The second time I felt like it was on purpose. It made me feel very uncomfortable. It was not until I had seen the pots that I suspected it was semen in my drink. At times, I refused a coffee, but he would do it anyway." His claim to have a 'secret' medical condition was branded 'absurd' (Image: SWNS) When asked in court about these photos, which were seen by two colleagues, Chapman claimed this was an "accident" and that he'd been "mortified". In her victim impact statement, the victim told the court: "I feel betrayed by him, by his actions. He has made me feel powerless. "The devious and cowardly nature has shocked me. If this was a physical attack, I may have at least had a chance to defend myself. I've had to be open about this to my partner and family, but I often feel alone and that no one quite understands. "I hope in the future I am able to put this all behind me and move on with my life. Though I have to accept that the mental and emotional trauma I have suffered throughout this will always remain with me in some way." Back in 2023, vile Chapman was sentenced at Gloucester Crown Court 2023 after being found guilty of one count of engaging in sexual activity without consent for making the victim "ingest his semen" on September 13, 2021. Jurors found the disgraced doctor not guilty of a second count of the same charge, which was allegedly committed between September 12, 2020, and September 12, 2021. This was during the period when the victim "thought" there might be something wrong with the coffee, but no official testing had taken place. It was determined that there had been 'no evidence of apology, reflection, insight or remediation from Dr Chapman in respect of his conviction' (Image: SWNS) Chapman, previously regarded as an experienced and well-respected medic, has now been struck off after his conduct was heard at a tribunal by the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS), held between June 23 and July 8, 2025. The tribunal looked at allegations that Chapman had, on one or more occasions between the years 2016 and 2021, engaged in conduct against Ms A - 'that constituted sexual harassment, was sexually motivated and was an abuse of his senior position.' The tribunal also examined allegations that, in 2021, Chapman had given Ms B a cup of coffee that contained semen, the charge he was convicted of. It was asserted that there had been 'no evidence of apology, reflection, insight or remediation from Dr Chapman in respect of his conviction.' In reference to the conduct against Ms. A, the tribunal "found proved" that Chapman had shown the victim images of an erect penis. It was "found proved" that he had shown her pictures of "unclothed women and/or that were pornographic in nature". It was also accepted that Chapman had asked Ms A if she'd found him on a dating app, before asking why she had not found him, and suggesting she should "look for [him]" on the app. In approximately 2020, it was "found proved" that Chapman kissed Ms A on the lips and, in May 2021, hugged and touched her bottom, the tribunal determined. MPTS Chair, Mr Jonathan Storey, concluded that Chapman's erasure from the medical register 'was the only sanction that would mark the seriousness of his misconduct and conviction.' Mr Storey stated: 'Erasure would send a message to the medical profession and to the public that this type of behaviour was unacceptable.' During his previous sentencing, His Honour Judge Rupert Lowe told Chapman: 'Mr Chapman, you are an intelligent professional of previous good character with good references. However, people did not know what you did in private. 'Your defence at trial was absurd and unnecessary. Your claims were implausible and contradictory. You told the police a ridiculous story of having semen on your hand and admitted to masturbating at work. 'You then shifted your story about testing for a medical condition. The truth is, you masturbated at work as you had a high sex drive. The impact on your career and personal life has been considerable. You have brought that on yourself.' In addition to a 12-month community order, Chapman was also subjected to a 10-year restraining order preventing him from contacting the victim, plus a five-year notification order. He also had to pay court costs totalling £3,500.
