Housefull 5A and Housefull 5B ending explained: Who are the the killers in this Akshay Kumar-starrer?

Indian Express07-06-2025
After almost six years, Sajid Nadiadwala released the fifth installment of his famous comedy franchise Housefull. While it became the first Bollywood film to have a fifth installment, it also made news for becoming first Hindi film to release with two endings as the makers wanted to give a more 'interactive' experience to their viewers. As a result, the Akshay Kumar-starrer was presented as Housefull 5A and Housefull 5B.
While the first two hours of the film are identical, the climax for both versions are different. The comedy is a murder mystery set on a cruise and the primary difference between both films is the identity of the killer. So if one wishes to watch both the endings, they will have to watch the first two hours twice over.
The movie begins with the character of Ranjeet (played by veteran actor Ranjeet), dying right before his 100th birthday and it is declared that his heir Jolly will inherit the property. The film then introduces three characters, Jalabuddin played by Riteish Deshmukh, Jalbhushan played by Abhishek Bachchan, and Julius played by Akshay Kumar, all claiming to be Jolly. However, after multiple murders take place in the cruise, it is revealed that none of these characters are the real Jolly. The plot presents a twist when Bobby Deol appears from nowhere at the end of the film and identifies himself as the real Jolly, dividing the money between all the characters and marrying Sonam Bajwa–don't ask why or how!

While the film stays true to its theme with a house or in this case a cruise with too many characters, it becomes a mess when every character becomes a murder suspect. After showing chaos, drama, songs and blasts from the past, the makers in Housefull 5A reveal that Dev (played by Fardeen Khan), son of Ranjeet Dobriyal (played by Ranjeet) from his second wife is behind the murders along with his partner-in-crime Jolly 2 (played by Abhishek Bachchan).
Meanwhile, the second version of the film which is identical to the first version for almost 2 hours, brings a twist as it shows Maya (played by Chitrangada Singh), a board member of Ranjeet's empire as the real killer along with Jolly 2 (played by Abhishek Bachchan).
Out of over 7000 shows of the film, over 4000 shows end with climax A, whereas over 3000 shows end with climax B with both versions having a special appearance by Bobby Deol.

The film, written and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala, takes a dark turn unlike its previous installments where one murder leads to another. Both the endings have opened to mixed response with the film earning Rs 23 crore in India. Two different endings have also created a state of confusion among moviegoers. More than an interactive experience, the film with two endings leaves an impression that the makers were rather confused and and couldn't make up their mind about a distinct ending.
The film, directed by Tarun Mansukhani, stars Akshay Kumar, Abhishek Bachchan, Riteish Deshmukh, Nargis Fakri, Jacqueline Fernandez, Sonam Bajwa, Chunky Panday, Johnny Lever, Dino Morea, Fardeen Khan, Chitrangada Singh, Soundarya Sharma, Nikitin Dheer, Shreyas Talpade, Nana Patekar, Sanjay Dutt, Jackie Shroff, and Ranjeet, among others.

Shatrughan Sinha went to plastic surgeon to fix his ‘kata-pita' face, but Dev Anand stopped him: ‘One day, this will become your signature'

Shatrughan Sinha, today a household name known for his intense performances, booming voice, and iconic dialogue delivery, has acted in more than 150 films across Hindi, Bhojpuri, and Bengali cinema. But before his rise to fame, the journey was anything but smooth. Early in his career, Shatrughan faced repeated rejections, not for lack of talent, but for what many deemed 'unconventional looks.' In fact, he once considered getting plastic surgery to 'fix' his face. In a recent conversation with Curly Tales, he shared the deeply personal story of how close he came to altering his appearance, and how it was legendary actor Dev Anand who stopped him. 'Sapne toh bohot kuch the, par darr lagta tha ki ye kati-phati shakal lekar kaise actor banunga. Log kehte bhi the ki iss kati-pati shakal ka kuch karo… uss time par hota hai. Main toh chala bhi gaya tha, doctor se baat bhi kar li thi ki plastic surgery karwa kar isko theek karo… iska ilaaj karo. Aur unhone bola ki kar bhi denge. Lekin Dev saab ke paas main gaya… woh mujhe bohot maante the… aur unhone kaha ki kabhi mat karna. Tumhari jo personality hai, tum jab kaamyab ho jaoge toh yahi tumhara signature style ho jayega. Unhone kaha ki dekho, mere daanton ke beech mein ek gaddha hai, aur maine aaj tak usse fill up nahi karwaya hai… aur log aaj usse yaad rakhte hain. Toh jo tumko tumhara minus point lagta hai, wohi kal tumhara plus point banega. (I had big dreams, but I was afraid, how would I become an actor with such a scarred face? People would say, 'Do something about this scarred face.' At the time, I agreed. I even went to a doctor and asked for plastic surgery to fix it. The doctor said it could be done. But then I went to Dev saab, he believed in me deeply, and he told me, 'Never do it. Your personality is unique. One day, this will become your signature style.' He told me, 'Look, I have a gap between my teeth, and I've never filled it… now people remember me for that. What you think is a minus today could be your biggest plus tomorrow.) Thankfully, Shatrughan listened to Dev Anand's wise words. Today, the very features he once wanted to change have become part of his lasting screen identity. Beyond their personal bond, Shatrughan and Dev Anand also collaborated professionally. They shared screen space in at least three notable Hindi films in the early 1970s, Prem Pujari (1970), Gambler (1971), and Shareef Budmaash (1973).

‘Gave a hit with a super-duper flop actor Amitabh Bachchan': Javed Akhtar says he, Salim Khan had no work for 9 months after delivering 4 hits

Veteran screenwriter and lyricist Javed Akhtar, long known for championing the rights of writers in the Indian film industry, recently spoke about the decades-long struggle for recognition and fair compensation. In a candid conversation with filmmaker and screenwriter Anu Singh Choudhary for JLF International, Javed reflected on the systemic challenges writers have faced and the ongoing need to fight for their due. 'You see, situations have never been ideal for people. They have fought for it,' he said. 'You know, when we came into the film industry, writers were never mentioned on posters or banners. They were very poorly paid. There was no credit, no money. We fought. One after another, we gave films which were very good, and then we fought.' He recounted the early years of his career with his writing partner Salim Khan, when the duo, known as Salim-Javed, changed the landscape of Hindi cinema. 'We said, 'No, these are our terms and conditions. If you cannot pay us that much, if you cannot accept our terms and conditions, we will not work.' We fought. Maybe it is not very easy for everybody to fight the way we did, but at least, as a group, as a whole community of writers, you can stand up and say, 'That much, and no more.' Nobody will give you anything on a platter. Nobody gave us anything on a platter. We fought for it.' Reflecting on his breakthrough years, Akhtar recalled, 'You know, our first film was Andaz. Second was Haathi Mere Saathi. Third was Seeta Aur Geeta. Fourth was Zanjeer, a super-duper hit film with a super-duper flop actor. Yes. We decided that now, enough is enough. We had given four hits in a row.' He elaborated on how they took a risk by casting Amitabh Bachchan, then considered an unlucky actor, as the lead in Zanjeer, a film that went on to become a blockbuster and redefine Bachchan's career. 'Zanjeer was a major hit. He gave a great performance. But he always gave great performances, even in those films which didn't run. He was good. That's why we took him. We were not even liking him. We could see that he was a volcano of talent, just not getting good scripts.' 'So we decided that we will take X amount. I remember the amount. But I also remember, in the subject department… After four hit films, for nine months we could not sign a single film, because nobody was willing to pay. They would laugh in my face. 'Kitna bola?'' He recalled the financial strain during that period: 'I had bought a second-hand Ambassador for ₹13,000. That was sold again, because there was no work. But after nine months, we took that price. Again, we decided on a price. And we fought to get it. So, nothing comes easily. Don't complain. Situations have never been ideal for anybody.' Javed emphasized the need for collective action among writers, urging those in a position of influence to stand up for industry-wide change. 'If a few people think that something is wrong, ten of you, fifteen of you, stand up. You're a successful writer. You're not just anybody. You're successful. People like you. You will find some more people like you. Stand up. Say, 'We will not take this nonsense.' Some people will throw you out. That is for sure. Go through it. But if you think that someday all the filmmakers will stand up with a chained heart and give you what you deserve, it will never happen.' During the 1970s, Salim-Javed wrote as many as 24 films, 22 of which were blockbusters. Their influence extended far beyond iconic dialogues and unforgettable characters. They were pioneers who demanded better terms, challenged the status quo, and helped lay the groundwork for future generations of writers in Bollywood.
