Former NHL player Joe Pavelski leads American Century celebrity golf tournament
'The round was good,' said Pavelski, second last year behind former tennis player Mardy Fish. 'Obviously, the first tee and first-round excitement was there. Nerves were there.'
Former NBA player and coach Vinny Del Negro, the 2021 winner in the celebrity tournament, was a point back.
Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry, the 2023 winner, was another point behind at 21 with former soccer player Taylor Twellman.
Carolina Panthers receiver Adam Thielen had 19 points, and former NFL quarterback Tony Romo — a three-time winner — was at 18 with Oklahoma City Thunder player Alex Caruso. Fish, also the 2020 winner, was at 17 with former pitcher John Smoltz and former LPGA Tour star Annika Sorenstam.
Charles Barkley holed out for eagle from 88 yards on the par-4 second in a nine-point round. He was tied for 24th in the 90-player field.
'I had a great day today,' Barkley said. 'I had a lot of fun. I played with Nate Bargatze and Larry the Cable Guy, two of the best dudes. But I've put a lot of time and effort in, and I was very happy with the way I played today.'
Curry played alongside father Dell and brother Seth.
'It was obviously fun playing with my dad and my brother, the matching outfits and everything, getting the vibes going,' Stephen Curry said. 'As average as I think I played, I held the big numbers out, which allows you to stay relevant. Excited for tomorrow.'

‘A little bit bizarre': Calgary Flames centre Nazem Kadri addresses persistent trade speculation
Article content Across his three campaigns in Calgary, Kadri has led all Flames with 88 markers — next on that chart is fellow forward Blake Coleman at 63 — and 198 points. Article content He tallied 35 times this past season, a new career-high, and set another personal best in ice-time, averaging 19:21 per night. Article content 'It's been excellent, it's been excellent,' Kadri told Knight Shift when asked about his current hockey home. 'Calgary is such a great city, especially for the family and I. Very scenic and beautiful, and we've got some good players along the way. So I appreciate the C of Red, for sure.' Article content That won't stop some in Toronto from daydreaming about how he'd look in blue. It doesn't require much imagination, since he played 561 games on behalf of the organization that made him a first-round draft choice in 2009. Article content As the rumours swirl, remember there was a widespread assumption last fall that Kadri would prefer to be traded to a contender rather than stick around through a retool, but he told reporters during training camp to 'just pump the brakes' on those questions because he believed the Flames could surprise some people in 2024-25. Article content Article content While they definitely did that, they ultimately missed the playoffs due to the tiebreaker, tying the record for most points by a crew that failed to qualify for the spring dance. Article content As Conroy & Co. shoot for a spot among the elite eight in the Western Conference, trading Kadri would seem like a step in the wrong direction. Perhaps they could be persuaded by a package that included a highly touted prospect, but it's most likely that No. 91 will be skating as Calgary's first-line centre for the foreseeable feature, with Jonathan Huberdeau on his left wing and either Matt Coronato or Adam Klapka on his right. Article content For his part, Kadri doesn't seem to be losing any sleep over the continuing speculation. Set to join the NHL's silver-stick club in the early stages of this coming season, he has been around long enough to know that the online rumblings are part of the business. Article content It must be reassuring that he currently has a full no-move clause, meaning he'd have to approve any potential change of address. Article content

Coffey will not return as Oilers assistant coach, Schwartz out as goaltending coach
Edmonton Oilers assistant coach Paul Coffey talks players during practice before Game 1 of the Stanley Cup final against the Florida Panthers, in Edmonton on Tuesday, June 3, 2025. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Jason Franson Hall of Fame defenceman Paul Coffey will not be behind the Edmonton Oilers bench next season, and the NHL club is moving on from goaltending coach Dustin Schwartz. The Oilers announced the moves Monday, which included the addition of Paul McFarland, Peter Aubry and Conor Allen to their coaching staff. Aubrey takes over as goaltending coach, while McFarland will serve as an assistant coach, and Allen will handle team skills. The club said Coffey will return to his role as a special adviser to ownership and hockey operations after having a more hands-on role last season, working with the defence as assistant coach. His role on the bench will be filled by the 39-year-old McFarland spent last season as head coach of the Western Hockey League's Calgary Hitmen. He makes his return to the NHL after working as an assistant coach for the Seattle Kraken for three seasons (2021-24). He also spent time as an assistant with the Florida Panthers (2017-19) and Toronto Maple Leafs (2019-20). Schwartz had been Edmonton's goaltending coach since 2014. While the Oilers made it to back-to-back Stanley Cup finals over the past two years, the inconsistent play of their goaltenders in the post-season became an area of concern. They will aim for more stability under the 48-year-old Aubry, who spent two seasons as an associate coach at Nebraska-Omaha (NCAA). He spent eight seasons (2015-16 to 2023-24) as the Chicago Blackhawks' developmental goaltending coach as well as the goaltending coach for the team's AHL affiliate in Rockford. Allen, 35, spent last season with the United States' U17 team and has also recently worked in a skill development role with the Sioux City Musketeers. The Oilers also confirmed contract extensions for assistant coach Mark Stuart and video coach Noah Segall. This report by The Canadian Press was first published July 14, 2025. The Canadian Press
