Iga Swiatek dishes out cold revenge on Danielle Collins as long-running ‘fake' feud fuels a ruthless Wimbledon masterclass, writes RIATH AL-SAMARRAI

Daily Mail05-07-2025
Danielle Collins labelled Iga Swiatek a 'fake' last summer and retribution was administered quite mercilessly across 75 minutes on Saturday afternoon.
To use this two-set walloping as proof of Swiatek's authenticity as a contender on grass would be premature, but at the very least she was able to reduce a grudge match to a gentle stroll.
In doing so, coldness prevailed. It prevailed at the coin toss, when Swiatek greeted Collins's smile with the stoniest of expressions, it prevailed when the eighth seed showed no concern for her opponent after a fall in the first set, and it prevailed in how she swatted away any efforts of a recovery in the second.
Quite why they fell out in the first place remains a peculiar mystery.
The basics are that Collins retired hurt from their quarter-final at the Paris Olympics and was consoled by Swiatek on the court, before matters escalated when the American accused the former world No 1 of being 'insincere' and 'fake'.
Those were followed by Collins's cryptic allusions to Swiatek's behaviour in the locker room.
If that was a dent on Swiatek's image, then it paled in significance to her failed drugs test last year, which led to a one-month ban in November after the authorities ruled it a case of accidental contamination.
The knock-on effect has been a winless 2025 for Swiatek, the four-time French Open champion, and no one sensible will have wagered on Wimbledon being the place where the streak is ended.
But in reaching a fourth-round tie against the 22nd seed Clara Tauson, Swiatek is apparently finding comfort on her least preferred surface. Given Tauson's upset victory over world No 11 Elena Rybakina, there is no guarantee that Swiatek can match her best Wimbledon run and progress to the quarter-finals, but she is now operating on a distinctly open side of the draw.
'I am having a great time here,' she said after a 6-2, 6-3 demolition of Collins that was built on two breaks of the 31-year-old's serve in the first four games and a couple more in the second set.
'Honestly, it is much more fun this year,' Swiatek added. 'I had some practices where the ball was listening to me which is pretty new on grass and now I want it in the matches as well. It is a good experience.
'If it is listening, I don't need to do much.'

Former Manny Pacquiao opponent reveals major factor that can help him stun Mario Barrios

Chris Algieri, who fought Manny Pacquiao in 2014, believes the Filipino's power gives him a puncher's chance against Mario Barrios on Saturday. The former super-lightweight champion told FightHype that Pacquiao will not be the same fighter as he was all those years ago. Age waits for no man, but Pacquiao's power will allow him to remain competitive against Barrios. Algieri said: 'Father time is undefeated, and I can't expect Manny to be the guy he was when I fought him 11 years ago or the guy who fought Marquez the second time 15 years ago. He's going to be a different fighter. He continued: 'The factor that Manny Pacquiao can punch makes him able to fight a little bit longer. You see the guys that go on a little longer, it's usually the guys that can punch. You have that power, that eraser like George Foreman did in his 40s.' Drawing a comparison to Bernard Hopkins, Algieri said that Pacquiao would not be able to replicate how Hopkins adapted his game to his age and instead that his only asset in the fight will be his power. Algieri explained: 'A guy like Bernard Hopkins, who is super scrappy, who learned how to fight in spots and control the ring. Manny's not that guy. He's more of a puncher guy. He has an opportunity because of his power.' Against a fighter like Barrios, however, this may be exactly what Pacquiao needs to upset the odds and become the WBC welterweight champion at 46. Algieri believes that Barrios is often too easy to catch with a shot because he likes to engage his opponents up close, which can leave him vulnerable. Algieri said: 'Barrios is a warrior - he likes to engage. He's going to be there to hit at times, so it does give Manny more of a chance.' He concluded: 'But in terms of age, it does concern me.' Horner exit doesn't impact my future

Max Verstappen says Christian Horner's removal as Red Bull team principal has no impact on the decision about his own was sacked three days after the British Grand Prix, and has been replaced by Frenchman Laurent Mekies, formerly boss of second team Racing speaking publicly about the changes for the first time, said: "I don't think it will matter at all for my decision in the future."The only thing that matters is that we work on the car and make it as fast as we can make it, really."The four-time champion also appeared to hint he will stay at Red Bull beyond this season. Verstappen is contracted to Red Bull until 2028, but has mechanisms in his contract that could allow him to leave in particular circumstances - the details of which are not public - and is being courted by Mercedes."The last one and a half years have not been what we want to be," admitted the 27-year-old. "Now we try to be more competitive this year a little bit, but for sure also with the new regulations." F1 is introducing new chassis and engine rules for 2026, and it was the general belief in the sport that Mercedes will be best prepared for the revised power-units that could have motivated the Dutchman to addition, Red Bull have slipped from competitiveness since the middle of last season - Verstappen lifted his fourth consecutive world title in 2024, but won only twice in the final 13 year, he is third in the championship at the halfway point of the season, 69 points behind the leader, McLaren's Oscar Piastri, having won just twice in 12 grands prix. Red Bull are fourth in the constructors' championship behind McLaren, Ferrari and whether there was a possibility he would not be driving for Red Bull next year, Verstappen said: "There's also a possibility I don't wake up tomorrow. So then there is no driving at all. So, life is unpredictable."But in general, I'm very happy where I'm at - and I hope. That was still the target that was set out when we signed the new deal, you know, that I would drive until the end of my career."Commenting on Horner's departure, he added: "Management decided they wanted to steer the ship in a different direction, probably. And then everyone else, of course, has to anyway agree to that and look forward."And I am looking forward. Of course, I had already quite a few meetings with Laurent as well."You know, the last two weeks have been quite intense for him to jump in. But, yeah, I'm equally also excited for the team now moving forward because that's what we have to do. You know, looking back, it doesn't make sense. It's not going to make you faster."Asked whether he was surprised by Horner's sacking as team principal after 20 years, Verstappen said: "Surprised. I mean, at the end of the day, in this world, things like that, they can happen."And when they told me, it's not like they just said, 'this is what we just decided', and then they hung up the phone. You know, you have a conversation about it."I don't need to go into detail what they said but it was, 'OK, if you guys think that this is the way forward, I'm the driver, you can decide, and this is how we're going to do it'."In the wake of reports the Red Bull factory in Milton Keynes had been unsettled by Horner's exit, Verstappen said: "It's been good. Of course, when there's a change like that, on the first day, people are a bit like, 'OK, what's happening?'"But, luckily also, I think basically the day after the announcement, I was at the factory doing my simulator stuff."You just go back to work. We have to work on performance, setting up the car here, making sure that everything is correlated in the best way possible."Verstappen was also asked about the tension that had existed between Horner and his father Jos Verstappen in the past 18 months, which was exacerbated by the accusations of sexual harassment and coercive, controlling behaviour made against Horner by a female internal Red Bull investigations dismissed the allegations and the 51-year-old has always denied them, although the ultimate resolution to them is yet to added: "People can have a difference of opinion now and then, and I actually expect that to happen because if everyone always agrees there is a problem. You need to have a difference of opinion. And, yeah, that's now something that we work with in a different direction."

Dolphins release update on hospitalized player who was airlifted from practice after suffering injury

Miami Dolphins offensive lineman Bayron Matos remains hospitalized after he suffered an injury scare during Wednesday's training camp. The 24-year-old was airlifted to a local medical facility after suffering an injury in the final few minutes of the first practice session of this year's camp. Matos' agent, Perlesta Hollingsworth, released an update on the tackle Thursday morning, telling the Miami Herald that his client has 'an above the shoulder type injury.' However, he didn't provide any further clarity on the injury. Hollingsworth also noted that Matos has 'some but not full movement in his right leg.' The agent said: 'It comes and goes.' He went on to reveal that Matos sustained the injury after he bumped into one of his teammates. 'He ran into a defensive lineman when his head was lowered and took the brunt of the impact,' Hollingsworth said. The Dolphins also released a brief update on Matos in a social media statement Thursday morning but did not shed any light on the specifics of the injury. 'Bayron Matos sustained an injury at the end of Wednesday's practice and was transported to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he remained overnight for evaluation and testing,' the statement read. 'He has movement in all extremities and is in stable condition. He will remain in the care of doctors for continued observation.' The Dolphins suffered another major blow on Wednesday when veteran cornerback Artie Burns injured his knee at practice today and left on crutches. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Burns is feared to have a torn ACL but he's now awaiting an MRI and second opinion to confirm. Born in the Dominican Republic, Matos joined the NFL's International Player Pathway Program and signed with the Dolphins last year. He spent the season on Miami's practice squad but would have been desperately trying to impress head coach Mike McDaniel in training camp. Matos is a 6-foot-7, 334-pound tackle, who previously played college basketball before switching to football. Elsewhere, the Dolphins placed recently signed tight end Darren Waller on the physically unable to perform list along with veteran guard Liam Eichenberg. Waller came out of retirement last month to play on a one-year deal with Miami. He had announced his retirement last June after playing one season for the New York Giants. Eichenberg, a starting guard last season, will likely be a backup in 2025 after the Dolphins signed James Daniels in free agency and selected rookie Jonah Savaiinaea the NFL draft. Also Tuesday, the Dolphins signed offensive lineman Daniel Brunskill and waived quarterback Brett Gabbert. Safety Ifeatu Melifonwu was placed on the non-football injury list.
