Comprehensive approach needed to attract youth to agriculture in Selangor
The move follows findings from the Selangor 2024 Agricultural Census Interim Report, which revealed that the majority of farmers in the state are aged 46 and above.
Amirudin emphasised that agriculture must be positioned as both profitable and appealing to younger generations.
'There was once a trend of young people, including engineers, getting involved in agriculture, but that did not continue.
'Following that, we have to make agriculture cool, a good activity because it brings high yields or returns,' he told reporters after launching the report.
The census showed that 77.3 per cent of agricultural entrepreneurs in Selangor are aged 46 and above, with 44.5 per cent aged 60 and above.
Amirudin said policies to encourage youth participation in farming are expected to be outlined in the upcoming state budget or Selangor Plan.
The findings will also be reviewed by Selangor Infrastructure and Agriculture Committee chairman Datuk Izham Hashim, alongside the Selangor Agriculture Department and related agencies, to refine sector policies.
In a separate development, Amirudin confirmed that the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) will delay implementing the Smart Parking System (SIP) set to begin on Aug 1.
Three other local authorities—Shah Alam City Council (MBSA), Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ), and Selayang Municipal Council (MPS)—will proceed as planned. – Bernama

THE ROLLOUT of the Selangor Intelligent Parking System (SIPS) in Petaling Jaya has been postponed, says Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari. 'For now, three local councils have agreed and will go ahead first. 'However, Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) has postponed implementation in its area,' he said after launching the Interim Report of the 2024 Agriculture Census for Selangor in Klang. The councils that will proceed with the implementation on Aug 1 are Shah Alam City Council (MBSA), Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) and Selayang Municipal Council (MPS). Amirudin had previously said the state government continued to engage with local councils to standardise digital parking collection, adding that only MBPJ had raised objections to the initiative. It was also reported that MBPJ had not given their consent for the implementation yet as there were still a few terms that needed to be ironed out. The privatisation comes under SIPS, a state-led initiative to digitalise and centralise public parking. The initiative is spearheaded by Menteri Besar Selangor Incorporated (MBI) and implemented through a private concessionaire in collaboration with local councils. Under the SIPS model, parking revenue is split 50% to the concessionaire, 40% to the local council and 10% to MBI to support state initiatives. The system, to be operated by Rantaian Mesra Sdn Bhd, is aimed at improving efficiency and boosting state revenue.

Amirudin: We must make farming a cool and rewarding activity to attract young people. SELANGOR is planning to introduce new policies and programmes to attract younger generations to farming, as part of efforts to bolster food security and ensure sustainability of the state's agriculture sector. Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari highlighted the necessity of this initiative, given that nearly three-quarters of the state's farmers were aged 46 and above. 'More than 75% of our farmers are aged 46 and above, with over half being over 50. 'We must make farming a cool and rewarding activity to attract young people,' said Amirudin. He said the upcoming state budget and Selangor's development plan would include measures such as training and support programmes to facilitate this transition. The Mentri Besar also emphasised the importance of enhancing national food security and promoting sustainable farming practices. 'Plantation operators are reducing the use of certain chemicals and excessive fertilisers while maintaining high and sustainable yields. 'For instance, Sime Darby Plantation's estate in Pulau Carey, Kuala Langat, records some of the highest oil palm yields in Malaysia. 'That is an example of good farming practices,' he cited. He said accurate and timely data was needed to enable swift policy adjustments. 'With more frequent and accurate data, we can make timely policy changes instead of waiting another 10 years,' he said at the launch of the Interim Report of the 2024 Agriculture Census for Selangor, held in Klang. The last agriculture census was carried out in 2005. The interim report revealed that Selangor has 37,117 agricultural holdings, of which 95.6% are operated by individuals and 4.4% by organisations. Last year, the state's agriculture sector generated RM8.8bil in sales, with crops contributing RM3.64bil, livestock RM3.16bil, and fisheries RM1.59bil. Chief Statistician and Agriculture Census 2024 commissioner Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the 2024 census was the first in 19 years to encompass all sub-sectors, including crops, livestock, fisheries, aquaculture, forestry, and logging – providing a comprehensive profile of Selangor's agricultural landscape. He highlighted Sabak Bernam as a leader with 9,296 agricultural holdings and the largest padi cultivation area of over 24,000ha, contributing RM220mil in rice sales last year, or 60% of the state's total. Mohd Uzir said the findings would serve as a benchmark for modernising agriculture and strengthening food security. Also present were Selangor infrastructure and agriculture committee chairman Datuk Izham Hashim, Selangor Deputy State Secretary (Development) Datuk Johary Anuar and Selangor Statistics Department director Hartini Yaacob.

He said that apart from promising high returns, the agricultural sector also needs to be seen as a 'cool' activity from the perspective of young people. "Following that, we have to make agriculture 'cool', a good activity because it brings high yields or returns," he told reporters after launching the Selangor 2024 Agricultural Census Interim Report here today. Also present at the event was Chief Statistician of Malaysia Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin, who is also Commissioner of the 2024 Agricultural Census. Earlier, the Selangor Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM in a media statement said that the majority of agricultural entrepreneurs in Selangor or 77.3 per cent were aged 46 and above, while 44.5 per cent were aged 60 and above. Commenting further, Amirudin said the policy to encourage young people to become farmers was expected to be implemented in the state budget or the upcoming Selangor Plan. In addition, he said the findings of the agricultural census would also be examined by Selangor Infrastructure and Agriculture Committee chairman Datuk Izham Hashim, the Selangor Agriculture Department, and related departments in improving policies or guidelines regarding the sector.
