Who is Prajwal Revanna? From PM HD Deve Gowda's grandson to convicted rapist; the political prince who fell from grace

NEW DELHI: Once groomed as a rising political star in Karnataka's powerful Gowda family, Prajwal Revanna today stands as a convicted rapist — his fall as dramatic as his ascent. The 33-year-old former MP from Hassan and suspended JD(S) leader was on Friday convicted by a special court in one of four rape and sexual abuse cases filed against him. The case involved the sexual assault of a 48-year-old domestic worker at the family's Gannikada farmhouse in Holenarasipura in 2021. The court is set to announce the quantum of his punishment on Saturday. Prajwal, who had once served as the MP from Hassan, suffered a humiliating defeat in the recent Lok Sabha elections due to the cases filed against him. Numerous women had accused Prajwal of violating their modesty and recording the acts on camera. On April 27, at the request of the State Commission for Women, the Karnataka government had formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the alleged video clips of sexual abuse and exploitation involving Prajwal. Pen drives containing thousands of explicit video clips featuring multiple women had been circulating in Hassan and nearby areas well before the election. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like TV providers are furious: this gadget gives you access to all channels Techno Mag Learn More Undo The family's political legacy, deeply rooted in the district, traced back to patriarch HD Deve Gowda, who began his political journey from the Holenarsipur assembly seat and eventually rose to national prominence as India's Prime Minister. Earlier this year, the special court had framed charges against Prajwal under Sections 376(2)(k) (raping a woman over whom one has control or power), 376(2)(n) (repeatedly raping the same woman), 354A (sexual harassment), 354B (disrobing a woman), 354C (voyeurism), 506 (criminal intimidation), and 201 (destruction of evidence) of the then Indian Penal Code (IPC), and Section 66E (violation of privacy) of the Information Technology Act. Earlier last year, Prajwal made a futile attempt to secure bail from the special court, Karnataka high court, and then the Supreme Court. On Nov 11, 2024, the apex court dismissed Prajwal's bail petition, stating: "The accused is powerful as well as influential and could harm the trial."

‘Khujli' gang targets jeweller in Bengaluru, decamps with gold worth Rs 36L

Bengaluru: The 'khujli' gang (or 'itching powder gang') is on the prowl, yet again. Specialising in distracting its targets by spraying some itchy powdery substance on them before committing thefts, the gang has resurfaced in the city after nearly three years – its latest victim being a 62-year-old jeweller, who lost 385 grams of gold worth Rs 36 lakh. On Tuesday, Santhosh Kumar, owner of Marudhar Jewellers on Appaji Rao Lane in Nagarathpet, shut his shop around 9.30 pm and was returning home on his scooter with some gold ornaments in the two-wheeler's storage box. The ornaments were meant to be delivered to a shop in Maddur the next morning. As he was dusting the powder off, two men on a scooter approached him, asking what had happened. As Kumar tried to explain his discomfort, one of the strangers fetched a water bottle from their scooter and told Kumar to come aside in an apparent bid to wash off the powder. Soon after, the duo left. When Kumar returned to his scooter, he found his tiffin box missing. Suspecting that something was amiss, he opened the scooter's storage box and was shocked to see the gold ornaments gone. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Kumar immediately called his son and told him about the incident.
