Carlos Sainz Sr reportedly eyeing FIA presidency ahead of high-stakes 2025 election showdown
FIA presidency race heats up with Carlos Sainz Sr reportedly entering the 2025 contest
Could Carlos Sainz Sr CHALLENGE Mohammed Ben Sulayem for FIA presidency? 👀
Rally legend Carlos Sainz Sr , a towering figure in motorsport, is seriously considering a bid to become the next president of the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA). With elections set for December 12 in Uzbekistan, the two-time World Rally Champion and four-time Dakar Rally winner may challenge the embattled incumbent, Mohammed Ben Sulayem . The 63-year-old Spaniard has expressed a strong sense of duty to give back to a sport that has shaped his life and legacy.'This possibility has been in my mind for some time now, not very deeply, but now I think it could be the right time in my career for me to take the step,' Sainz said in a statement to Motorsport.com. 'I'm confident I can do a good job and put together an excellent team to give back to the sport part of what it has given me.'Sainz's credentials make him a serious contender. With over four decades of elite racing experience and a reputation for professionalism and integrity, his potential candidacy has already started generating buzz among insiders. According to sources close to the matter, Sainz is in the process of evaluating the level of support he might receive from the global motorsport community before making an official declaration.Importantly, he addressed concerns about a potential conflict of interest due to his son, Carlos Sainz Jr., who currently races in Formula 1 for Williams.'I have my track record and people know me well enough to understand that this will not be an issue,' Sainz Sr said. 'Obviously, I will have to step down regarding my role with Carlos and his career but this is not an issue at all. He's not a child any more… The FIA is a very serious entity and there will be no conflict.'If he formally enters the race, Sainz would be taking on Mohammed Ben Sulayem, whose leadership since 2021 has faced increasing scrutiny. Although Ben Sulayem has yet to officially confirm his re-election bid, he is widely expected to run again. His tenure has been marked by governance-related controversies, high-profile resignations, and allegations of interference in race operations. The recent resignation of FIA deputy president for sport Robert Reid, citing "a fundamental breakdown in governance standards," followed the earlier exits of compliance officer Paolo Basarri and audit committee members Bertrand Badre and Tom Purves. Former FIA CEO Natalie Robyn also broke her silence last year, stating that "professional processes are not adhered to and stakeholders are excluded from decision-making."These internal shake-ups have rattled confidence in the FIA's leadership, creating an opening for a reform-minded figure like Sainz. His emphasis on collaboration and transparency could be a welcome change, particularly among drivers. The Grand Prix Drivers' Association (GPDA), led by George Russell, has recently voiced its dissatisfaction with the FIA's punitive measures on language and public criticism. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton has advocated for increased driver influence in governance, saying drivers should hold 'a power seat at the table.'Sainz reportedly supports a more inclusive approach and is keen on empowering drivers and teams through greater involvement in rule-making and strategic decisions. His longstanding experience and diplomatic demeanor could provide the stability and forward-thinking vision the FIA is currently lacking. As December approaches, the motorsport world waits in anticipation. Whether Sainz officially enters the race or not, his potential candidacy alone has already begun to reshape the conversation around the future leadership of motorsport's most powerful governing body. Also Read: Is F1 the endgame for Lando Norris? 2.5 Years In Prison For Raul Asencio? Prosecutors Seeks Jail Term For Accused Real Madrid CB: Report
Spanish prosecutors seek a 2.5-year prison sentence for Real Madrid's Raul Asencio for distributing a minor's sex tape. Asencio denies wrongdoing. Spanish prosecutors have requested a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence for Real Madrid defender Raul Asencio, who is accused of involvement in the unauthorized distribution of a sex tape involving a minor. According to The Athletic, the charges stem from an incident in June 2023 during a holiday in the Canary Islands, where several former Real Madrid youth players were allegedly involved in filming a sexual encounter without consent and sharing the footage. Five players from Real Madrid's youth academy were vacationing at Amadores Beach Club when a sexual encounter allegedly took place between three of the players and two girls — one of whom was under 16, the legal age of consent in Spain. The footage was allegedly recorded on a mobile phone without the knowledge or consent of the victims. The tape is believed to have later circulated via WhatsApp. Although Asencio was not involved in the encounter itself, the Public Prosecutor's Office claims that he requested copies of the videos and showed them to a friend. Under Spanish law, such an action could constitute two offenses against privacy, as defined in Article 197 of the Spanish Criminal Code. Asencio, now 22, was promoted from Real Madrid Castilla (the club's B team) to the senior squad in November 2023 during a defensive injury crisis. He made 46 appearances across all competitions last season, becoming a regular member of Carlo Ancelotti's matchday squads. The investigation began after the three players allegedly involved in the recording — Ferran Ruiz, Juan Rodríguez, and Andrés García — were arrested in September 2023. Initially, Asencio was called to testify as a witness, but was later included in the Guardia Civil's (Spain's national law enforcement) investigation. At the time, Real Madrid issued a brief statement: 'A Castilla player and three Real Madrid C players have given statements to the Guardia Civil regarding a complaint about the alleged broadcasting of a private video via WhatsApp. When the club has detailed knowledge of the facts, we will take the appropriate measures." According to reports from The Athletic, both alleged victims are receiving psychological treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder. The Prosecutor's Office has requested that Asencio pay €5,000 in damages to each victim, in addition to the proposed custodial sentence. The prosecution is also pursuing prison terms for the three other players involved. The case is currently under judicial review, and no trial date has been set. In response to the charges, Asencio has strongly denied any wrongdoing and emphasized the importance of the presumption of innocence. The Spaniard added that he intends to defend his position in court, should the case move forward. Sources close to the club suggest that Madrid are awaiting further legal clarification before deciding on Asencio's future at the Bernabéu. tags : la liga real madrid view comments Location : New Delhi, India, India First Published: August 02, 2025, 19:22 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Red Bull Racing Reprimanded For Verstappen Tossing Towel On Track During Hungarian GP Practice
Last Updated: Max Verstappen and Red Bull Racing were reprimanded after Verstappen threw a face towel from his cockpit during practice for the 2025 Hungarian Grand Prix. No penalty was issued. Max Verstappen and Red Bull Racing received an official reprimand from Formula One stewards on Friday following an unusual incident during practice for the 2025 Hungarian Grand Prix, in which the Dutch driver threw a face towel out of his cockpit and onto the track. The three-time world champion was summoned to speak with race officials after the second free practice session at the Hungaroring, where stewards reviewed video evidence of the event. The incident occurred midway through Free Practice 2. Verstappen was seen pulling his car off the racing line at Turn 3, slowing down noticeably. He then removed both hands from the steering wheel to retrieve a small white towel from the side of his cockpit and proceeded to toss it out of the car. max is noted for throwing a towel out of the car.. happy friday everyone — nini (@SCUDERIAFEMBOY) August 1, 2025 Although the towel landed well off the racing line, it remained on the asphalt until the session concluded. The situation raised immediate concerns about track safety and prompted race control to refer the matter to the FIA stewards, who reviewed it as a possible case of unsafe behaviour on track. While similar scenarios in the past have led to fines or penalties for teams, the FIA ultimately decided not to take disciplinary action beyond a formal warning. The stewards' statement explained the rationale behind the decision. 'Shortly after Car 1 was released from its garage, the driver of Car 1 (Verstappen) was observed to have thrown a towel out of the cockpit," the stewards noted. 'The driver explained that while in the garage, the face towel had slipped from his lap to the side of the seat, and the team was unaware that it remained in the cockpit. When the driver realised it was there, he moved to the far right of the track and attempted to throw it as far away from the car and the track as possible." Despite Verstappen's intention to discard the towel safely, it remained on the circuit surface for the remainder of the session. 'It Was the Safest Option" Speaking to reporters after the session, Verstappen offered a composed explanation for the moment, which — though harmless in the end — raised eyebrows in the paddock due to its rarity. 'It's just a towel that you normally wipe your face with when you come back in," Verstappen said. 'It was still in the car when I went out." Rather than risk the cloth interfering with his footwell, Verstappen made a split-second decision to dispose of it on track, away from the racing line. 'Instead of it maybe potentially flying in between my feet, which is the dangerous part, I drove off line and I got rid of it in the safest way possible," he added. view comments First Published: News sports Red Bull Racing Reprimanded For Verstappen Tossing Towel On Track During Hungarian GP Practice Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
