MACC remands 4 in Sabah over false claims worth RM5mil
PETALING JAYA : The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has remanded four people, including two company owners, on suspicion of submitting false claims to procure work permit printing services worth around RM5 million.
Magistrate Dzul Elmy Yunus issued a four-day remand order until July 5 for three men and a woman following an application by MACC in Kota Kinabalu yesterday.
Kosmo quoted a source as saying that the suspects, in their 40s and 50s, were arrested between 6pm and 7pm on June 30 when they went to give their statements at the Sabah MACC office.
'All four suspects, two of whom are a former administrator and assistant administrator of a local oil company, are believed to have committed the offences from 2019 to 2023.
'The two suspects are believed to have conspired with the other two, both company owners, to submit false claims to procure permit printing services worth around RM5 million,' said the source.
The suspects were arrested in Op Effingo, an operation by MACC's special operations division.
On June 30, the division raided 10 locations around Kota Kinabalu and the Klang Valley, including several companies and the suspects' residences and offices.
'MACC seized 22 bank accounts, including an Amanah Saham Bumiputera account with about RM2 million, and around RM14,000 in foreign currencies.
'MACC also seized three luxury vehicles worth RM1.3 million and three mobile phones,' said the source.
Zamri Zainul Abidin, senior director of MACC's special operations division, confirmed the arrests.
He said the suspects would be charged under Section 18 of the MACC Act 2009, which relates to false claims, and with other offences under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.

"As long as the culture of impunity within law enforcement agencies is not eradicated, those who abuse their power will continue to find ways to evade justice, and reforms will ultimately be cosmetic or nothing more than empty talk," Bersih said in its statement, adding that even after Teoh's case, deaths in custody have increased. Bersih reiterated its call for the government to respond positively to the Teoh family's demands and review the decision of No Further Action (NFA).

According to The Star, Teoh's younger sister, Teoh Lee Lan, 45, said the apology lacked sincerity as no MACC officer had been held accountable for her brother's death. Over 20 detained in alleged Kelantan gay party, police find condoms and HIV meds at bungalow
KOTA BHARU, July 17 — The Kelantan police today confirmed that they raided a gay gathering involving more than 20 local men at a bungalow on Jalan Kemumin, middle of last month, raising concerns among authorities about the increasingly bold illicit activities being organised behind closed doors. State police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the operation was launched based on public tip-offs and intelligence gathered by a special task force, following a report regarding a so-called 'food party' believed to be aimed at the gay community. 'Initial information indicated that over 100 local men were expected to attend the event. However, when the raid was carried out around 1 am, most had already dispersed, and only about 20 individuals remained at the scene,' id in a special press conference at the Kelantan Police Contingent Headquarters here today. He added that intelligence reports revealed the event began at night and was intended to continue until morning, with participants required to pay a fee. The event was allegedly promoted via social media platforms. Mohd Yusoff said that during the raid, police discovered hundreds of condoms and several boxes of HIV medication in a room, believed to have been used by the organisers as a store. He said further investigations into the mobile phones of three individuals led to the discovery of recordings containing gay pornographic content. 'Out of the more than 20 individuals detained, only three were charged as they were found in possession of pornographic material on their mobile phones,' he said. He also said there was no evidence of sexual activity at the premises at the time of the raid, and everyone was still fully clothed. 'However, the presence of condoms and HIV medication suggests preparations were in place should such activity happen,' he said. He said those involved were in their 20s to 30s and came from various backgrounds, including civil servants. 'This is the first reported gay gathering of its kind in Kelantan, and the police successfully acted to detect and raid the event,' he said. Mohd Yusoff also revealed that some of the participants were found to be HIV positive and were undergoing treatment, believed to be as a preventive measure. While no sexual activity was observed during the raid, he said, the police are treating the matter seriously, as such gatherings could serve as a platform for the spread of immoral activities and increase the risk of disease transmission, particularly HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.
