American defender Reggie Cannon wins appeal, CAS overturns FIFA decision in dispute with Boavista
American defender Reggie Cannon has won his appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which overturned a decision by FIFA's Dispute Resolution Chamber and will result in the player being owed money by Portuguese soccer club Boavista.
The court said Wednesday it had overturned FIFA's decision last Thursday. CAS said the parties have a period of time to request the text of the decision remain confidential and that if they do not it will be published.
'The decision leaves Boavista liable for compensation,' Cannon said in a statement. 'I wish my time there could have been different and didn't have to end under such circumstances.'
Now 27 and a member of Major League Soccer's Colorado Rapids, Cannon transferred from Dallas to Boavista in September 2020 and agreed to a five-year contract with annual salaries ranging from 175,000 euros (then $207,000) for 2020-21 to 550,000 euros for 2024-25 (currently $645,000).
Cannon filed several notices of default in 2021 and 2023. Portugal's arbitration commission in July 2023 decided he had the right to terminate the contract.
He terminated the agreement in June 2023, citing unpaid wages, and signed a four-year contract with Queens Park Rangers that September for salaries ranging from 180,000 pounds (then $220,000) for 2023-24 to 725,000 pounds (currently $685,000) for 2026-27..
Boavista claimed breach of contract and told QPR in December 2023 it was owed 2,107,425 euros (then $2.27 million). The Portuguese club filed a complaint with FIFA and Cannon filed a counterclaim.
A three-person FIFA Dispute Resolution Chamber panel of Frans de Weger, Mario Flores Chemor and Roy Vermeer ruled in June 2024 that Cannon was owed 88,000 euros (then $94,000) by Boavista plus interest and that QPR owed Boavista 1,287,000 euros (then $1.37 million).
CAS said it annulled the decision, except for a small portion detailing the case history.
FIFA, Boavista and QPR did not respond to requests from The Associated Press for comment. Colorado was scheduled to play Los Angeles FC on Wednesday and said Cannon would not be available for comment until later this week.

49ers starting offensive lineman predicts that he'll make the Pro Bowl in 2025
While the San Francisco 49ers have a few jobs up for grabs in training camp ahead of their 2025 campaign, one player who's set in his spot is right tackle Colton McKivitz. McKivitz, 28, was San Francisco's fifth-round pick (No. 153 overall) in the 2020 NFL draft after a five-year collegiate career at West Virginia, where he earned All-Big 12 and All-American honors as a senior. After he spent most of his rookie season as a backup and most of the following year on the practice squad, McKivitz eventually took over as the team's starting right tackle in 2023 and has started all 34 games over the last two seasons. As he prepares to enter his third season in the role, McKivitz believes he'll be recognized as one of the top players at his position in the NFL in 2025. 'I'm going to be a Pro Bowler this year, I've told countless people," McKivitz shared with NBC Sports' Matt Maiocco earlier this week. "I'm just putting it out there just because that's going to hold me accountable and get me to where I want to go. If you don't fight for it, you won't get it.' The 49ers are no strangers to having one of their starting tackles make the Pro Bowl, as left tackle Trent Williams made it four straight seasons from 2020-23. However, McKivitz will really have to play great in 2025 to unseat Philadelphia's Lane Johnson, who's made the Pro Bowl each of the last three seasons and has made six in his career. Interestingly, the San Francisco Chronicle's Noah Furtado reported that McKivitiz had the "most impressive offensive/defensive lineman one-on-one rep of the day" on Friday, as he completely shut down a pass rush from Nick Bosa. Vancouver's Dragon Boat Festival pushed out by FIFA World Cup
VANCOUVER - Organizers of the annual Concord Pacific Dragon Boat Festival in Vancouver say the event will be cancelled next year to make way for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Dominic Lai, the operations director with Dragon Boat BC, says the city declined to provide permits for 2026 edition of the festival. Lai says they have been told Vancouver's host city agreement for World Cup prohibits cultural and sporting events during a certain time frame and also restricts events within a certain radius of BC Place Stadium. The dragon boat festival usually takes place in late June, with last year's event drawing 200 teams from nine countries. He says the festival takes place in the restricted area, about 20 metres from the stadium that's set to host seven games during the World Cup next in June. A statement from Dragon Boat BC says the group had presented the city and the provincial government with different options for locations and time frames for its festival over the last few years, but it had not been successful in finding a solution. 'At this time, there is no confirmed support from the city and the province for the alternate scenarios we have presented,' it says. 'Without clear information and support, non-profit organizations like Dragon Boat BC will have to navigate the challenging operational and financial impacts of the host city agreement on their own.' The City of Vancouver directed a request for comment to the B.C. government. A statement from the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport says it was aware that next year's dragon boat festival has been cancelled. It says the 2026 FIFA World Cup was announced in 2022, and many event organizers have used the 'lead time' to find alternative dates and locations. Lai says it's not as simple as changing the date, as the dragon boat festival depends on water conditions, the availability of docks and when competitors can attend. He likened the 2026 FIFA World Cup to 'the second pandemic' that is delivering a 'substantial' financial blow to his organization. Lai says hosting the FIFA World Cup is meant to benefit the entire community. 'The legacy of FIFA needs to be one where the community comes out stronger than before,' he says. 'That's really important to make sure that … all these community organizations are in a good place to benefit from these impacts after FIFA is gone.' The city and the B.C. government have said hosting seven matches is estimated to generate more than $1 billion in visitor spending and create some 18,000 jobs.
