York boxer Granger itching for more after professional debut victory

YORK boxer Joel Granger is keen to 'have as many fights as possible as soon as possible' having won his debut professional match in a super welterweight contest against veteran Newark fighter Connor Meanwell. The bout took place on an open-air show at Wakefield's DIY Kitchens Stadium organised by Manchester-based promoter Steve Wood's VIP Promotions. "I surprised myself with how calm I was in the ring, settled even, despite the heat, over 30 degrees," explained Granger, 22. "I knocked him down with a first round headshot, but he got through the standing eight count. "That said he wasn't a pushover. I kept the pressure up. He knew I meant business." Hailing originally from Acomb and a former student of Millthorpe School, Granger is both managed and coached by Wayne Woods at his east Leeds gym. "Joel's been with us less than a year," said Woods. "He's applied himself and is determined to make a success of it. "This was the right time for Joel to join the pro ranks as he's matured enough to discipline himself to give the full commitment which makes this sport demanding." "I've been around boxing all my life," added Granger. "Our family's heavily involved in the amateur sport. "I'm grateful to Wayne who's provided me with a superb opportunity. I plan to make the most of it. Joel Granger poses with his team after celebrating a first professional victory. (Image: VIP Boxing Promotions) "I've got three generous sponsors making it possible for me to concentrate on my boxing full time. "Ticket sales haven't been a problem because I know lots of people and I'm a warm, chatty person who's keen to get on with everyone." Granger admires boxers Terence Crawford and 'Boots' Ennis: "Mainly because they've achieved what I want to achieve. I'm keen to be out there again soon, certainly a couple more times this year." Aaron Judge makes history? A major trade? 5 Yankees predictions for second half of season

What's in store for Aaron Judge, what's going to happen at the MLB trade deadline, and where will the Yankees finish in the regular season standings? Well, you've come to the right place. Sort of. In yet another bold, and slightly unhinged, look into the immediate pinstriped future, we present our midseason version of Yankees' predictions. Yankees' Aaron Judge at 60 MLB's home run chase starts to get interesting around Labor Day. That's when Aaron Judge overtakes Seattle Mariners' switch-hitting catcher Cal Raleigh for the big-league lead in home runs and never looks back. Judge's pace takes him near his own AL single-season mark of 62 homers, but the Yankees' captain ends with No. 60 on Sept. 27, prompting a curtain call and a two-minute ovation from the Yankee Stadium crowd. Yankees swing a big trade with Arizona Slugging third baseman Eugenio Suarez's comments to reporters about the Yanks during All-Star week - "If I go over there, I'll try my best to help them win a World Series'' - are put to the test. One day before MLB's July 31 trade deadline, the Yankees land Suarez, starter Merrill Kelly and lefty reliever Jalen Beeks from the Diamondbacks. In exchange, the Yankees send right-hander Clayton Beeter, top minor league pitching prospects Ben Hess and Bryce Cunningham, outfielder Everson Pereira and infielder Roc Riggio to Arizona. Cody Bellinger: Mr. July Quickly out of the gate, Cody Bellinger resumes his torrid July pace and claims the AL Player of the Month award. Bellinger winds up batting .390 in July with nine homers and a 1.170 OPS, but the Yankees post a 6-7 mark to finish July, with tough series against the Braves, Blue Jays, Phillies and Rays. Yankees on the comeback trail Sidelined since spring training due to a lat strain, Luis Gil returns to the Yankees' rotation Aug. 5 at Texas and pitches five innings, receiving a no-decision. Relievers Fernando Cruz (oblique) and Mark Leiter Jr. (stress fracture, left leg) return to the bullpen during the first weekend of September, in time to impact the AL East race. Yankees win the AL East, barely Still trailing the Blue Jays by two games entering the last week of the season, the Yankees take advantage of a weak late September schedule. With six games against the White Sox and Orioles at Yankee Stadium, the Yanks go 6-for-6 and clinch the AL East in Game 162, finishing with a 93-69 record. But they fail to earn a first-round bye, forced to play a Wild Card series against Raleigh's Seattle Mariners as division champs Detroit and Houston own better records. WNBA players and the league are far apart on new CBA talks ahead of in-person discussions

NEW YORK (AP) — The WNBA players union and league officials have much to discuss when they sit down this week for their first in-person talks as a group since December about the new collective bargaining agreement. After sharing initial proposals, the two sides apparently are far apart in the early negotiations as they prepare for their first face-to-face meeting that includes the players executive council in Indianapolis on Thursday heading into All-Star weekend. 'We got a proposal from the league, which was honestly a slap in the face,' Phoenix Mercury forward and union rep Satou Sabally said. Increased salaries, revenue sharing and roster size are three areas where the union expect to see major changes from the current CBA that will expire at the end of this season after the players decided to opt out last year. Nearly all the players who aren't on rookie scale contracts right now will be free agents after this season and looking for big salary increases. Union president Nneka Ogwumike, who has now been a part of three CBA negotiations, is optimistic that Thursday's meeting could be beneficial for both sides since it's in-person. The two sides have had meetings over the last few months, but this will be the first time that all the players on the executive council will be there. Ogwumike said 'when you're doing things via documents, when you're doing things via proxy, whether it's ... our union staff and league staff,' it's different. But 'when you're sitting at the table, things a lot of times, in my experience, you get done a little bit more efficiently.' The WNBA is experiencing unprecedented growth across nearly every business metric from attendance and viewership. There's also the new $2.2 billion media rights deal that will start next season and the league plans to expand to 18 teams by 2030 with each of the three new teams paying $250 million expansion fee. 'It's interesting that there's a $250 million expansion fee, and there's no openness to have that be reflected in revenue share that goes to the players, especially as we're experiencing growth,' Ogwumike said. 'It doesn't make a lot of sense to me, but we're hoping we can get some clarity on that in Indiana.' Ogwumike said the players had submitted a proposal back in February that the league finally responded to last month. She was surprised it took so long for the league to respond with its proposal, saying that it seemed that the league misunderstood the union's initial offer. WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert said at the draft in April that the union's initial proposal wasn't comprehensive, but that she also is optimistic that a deal would get done. 'We'll get something done and it'll be transformational,' she said. 'These things take time.' The key thing for the commissioner is that the new CBA protects the sustainability of the league going forward. 'We want to have a fair deal for all, but it has to be within the confines of a sustainable economic model that goes on for 10 years,' she said. 'We've had a few years of great growth … but we need to continue to make sure that we can fund the things that the players are asking for, that we want for them, too.' If a deal isn't done by the end of October, some players, including Napheesa Collier and Angel Reese, have mentioned the potential of a walkout. 'From the players' perspective, it's hard to be able to navigate this during the middle of the season, but also we know how important it is and really getting it done before the end of October and we're making that effort to be able to do both,' union vice president Breanna Stewart said. 'The fact that it's been a little bit slow to start is tough, but hopeful things will ramp up now after getting their proposal back. We have a big meeting in Indy at All-Star and it's going to be spicy.' ___ AP WNBA:
