Telstra launches Australia's first direct to satellite text messaging service
Telstra has launched a mobile-to-satellite service for some customers, delivered through SpaceX's Starlink service.
The technology is considered a significant breakthrough, providing coverage for people outside of land-based 4G and 5G networks.
Communications analyst Graham Lynch said while it was still early days, the technology had massive implications for rural Australians.
Initially, customers will only be able to text message using the service, and it will only work on a Samsung Galaxy S25 handset.
Telstra's executive for technology engagement, Channa Seneviratne, said they were working to add additional handsets.
"In time, there will be more, including future support for Apple devices," Mr Seneviratne said.
He said the new service would be included in the standard contract, so there would be no extra charges, but he warned there could be some delays in sending and receiving messages.
"If the satellite is not quite overhead, it could take a few minutes," he said.
Accompanying the rollout of the new service are questions about its reliability.
Mr Lynch said testing of similar services in the United States produced patchy results.
"Messages get dropped, messages get missed," he said.
He said getting a reliable connection was challenging because the low Earth orbit satellites (LEOsats) themselves are moving at about 25,000 kilometres per hour.
"The LEOsats are spinning very fast around a planet that is itself spinning very fast, so there's a lot of calibration involved in the physics," he said.
The new messaging service uses LEOsats and direct-to-device (D2D) technology to transmit signals from space directly to mobile phones.
Users will connect automatically to the Starlink satellite if they are beyond the range of Telstra's mobile network on mainland Australia and Tasmania, excluding the Australian Radio Quiet Zone in Western Australia and remote offshore territories and islands of Australia.
Many rural Australians are already using LEOsats to connect to services like Starlink, Sky Muster, Intelsat and Inmarsat for internet browsing, email, voice calls, and texting.
But the CEO of the Association of Mining and Exploration Companies, Warren Pearce, said the technology had potentially life-saving implications for prospectors and others working remotely.
Telstra said the service did not connect to emergency services yet, and users would have to text a third party to call triple-0 in those situations.
TPG-Vodaphone has already tested a service and Optus is working on it as well.
Telstra is working on enabling voice calls using the LEOsat network, but it will not be available until 2027.
Mr Pearce said that would be significant.
"If we can get to a point where we can make contact and have a conversation in every part of Australia, I think that would be a major breakthrough," he said.
Labor promised to include LEOsat services in the federal government's universal mobile service obligation (UMSO) by 2027 if it was elected at the most recent poll.
This would require telcos to offer satellite services alongside mobile and fixed services.
If that happens, Australia will be the first country in the world to take that step.
Mr Lynch said other countries like the US and New Zealand were offering the service, but reliability was still an issue.
"They're not at the level where they can provide guarantees, which is what makes what Australia is planning to do so novel," he said.

Two killed after light crashes into paddock, catches alight near Toowoomba, Queensland
Two men have been killed after a light plane crashed into a paddock before catching on fire in Queensland's Toowoomba region. Early investigations indicate the aircraft crashed near Oakey Cooyar Rd at Devon Park, about two hours from Brisbane, shortly after 3pm on Sunday. A Queensland Fire Department spokesperson said four crews rushed to the scene just before 3.20pm and extinguished a blaze from the plane, which had caught fire. Queensland Police said the two male occupants were declared deceased at the scene and that Forensic Crash Unit were investigating the circumstances around the incident. They will assist investigators from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau who confirmed on Sunday afternoon they would investigating the crash. The ATSB identified the aircraft as a twin turboprop Reims Cessna F406, and that officers were being deployed from Brisbane and Canberra. The investigators, who specialise in aircraft operations and maintenance, will conduct a range of 'evidence-gathering activities', including site and wreckage examination. 'Investigators will also seek to interview involved parties, and collect relevant recorded information including flight tracking data,' the ATSB said in a statement. 'As well as pilot and aircraft maintenance records, and weather information.' Anyone with footage of the aircraft at 'any phase of the flight' or following the crash were urged to contact the ATSB. A report will also be prepared for the information of the coroner.

Labor to act on key cost-of-living promises like 20pc HELP debt wipe-out, paid prac, $150 energy rebate
Australians are weeks away from receiving a 20 per cent cut to their student debt, with Labor vowing to scrap HECS and HELP debt as the government's first priority once parliament resumes, following the government's landslide election victory. The changes will be applied to all student debts as they on June 1, 2025, with the average HELP debt of $27,600 set to receive a reduction of about $5520. The HECS reform will also reduce the repayment threshold for debts from $56,156 to $67,000. Rates of repayments will also be lowered then current levels, with someone on $70,000 paying $1300. Despite the Coalition not supporting the measure during the campaign, education spokesman Jonno Duniam said he expected the Bill to 'pass' parliament. Speaking to the ABC on Sunday, he said that while the legislation would still need to go through party room and shadow cabinet, he believed 'the Australian people spoke pretty clearly … around the policies the Labor Party took,' adding the party was 'not really in the business of standing in the way of cost of living relief'. Labor will also seek to introduce its cost-of-living election promises, including the $150 energy rebate top up, the 30 per cent discount on home batteries, paid prac measures for student nurses, teachers, social workers and midwives, plus a $10,000 cash bonus for trainee builders who finish their construction apprenticeship. It will also begin work on legislating a two-week increase for Government Paid Parental Leave and laws to add superannuation on government paid parental leave, while also increasing the Super Guarantee to 12 per cent.
