Maidie Music House opens to support Black artists in Nova Scotia

CTV News2 days ago
Katrina Lopes chats about creating Maidie Music House, an artist development company rooted in Black Nova Scotian heritage and culture.
Maidie Music House, a Halifax-based artist development company, is opening its doors Friday.
'Aug. 1, on Emancipation Day, which was intentional because its symbolic of liberating ourselves from these systems that were never built for us,' veteran music executive, Katrina Lopes told CTV Morning Live. 'That's what Maidie Music House is about.'
The company, founded by Lopes, looks to support and promote Black artists across Nova Scotia.
'Building something that's for us, by us, that understands what our needs are because there has been no infrastructure here,' Lopes said.
Maidie Music House hopes to close the gap for Black artists in the province and help them develop their careers.
'The biggest gap has been artists development and performance couching,' Lopes said.
To celebrate the opening of the music company, a concert is being held as part of the Crescendo Fest.
The audience can expect performances from Reeny, Zamani, Haliey Smith and Jody Upshaw.

‘Great time to focus on our farmers': Regina's 2nd annual tomato festival a hit

When the Regina Farmer's Market (RFM) started the tomato festival last year, they weren't sure it would turn out to be a success, but if the second edition is a sign of things to come, then there should be no worries. Dozens upon dozens of vendor tents lined the Queen Elizabeth II Gardens and Wascana Lake, and hundreds of patrons were in attendance during the festival on Saturday. The event also saw a tomato tasting contest for the second year in a row, with an esteemed judging panel that included Regina Mayor Chad Bachynski. However, the spirit of the event was to showcase some of Saskatchewan's producers of fresh produce, namely tomatoes. 'We are right in the peak season for our farmers market in the middle of the summer, we've got a lot of fresh produce coming in. It just seemed like a great time to focus on our farmers and our growers by celebrating something that's coming into season right now, and that's tomatoes,' explained Holly Laied, RFM's executive director. 'So, that's what we're doing here today, shining a light on them and the all the great work they do, bringing us some fresh, healthy, local food,' she added.
