Asean council to meet in Pahang soon
Pahang State Legislative Assembly Speaker Datuk Seri Mohd Sharkar Shamsudin said the meeting will be chaired by Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker Datuk Dr Ramli Mohd Nor.
Mohd Sharkar said the meeting, themed 'Uniting Parliaments for an Inclusive and Sustainable Asean in Addressing Contemporary Drug Challenges', would discuss Asean's commitment to collectively and inclusively tackle current dangerous drug-related challenges.
'Our discussions at the meeting will revolve around efforts to find solutions towards the issue of drug trafficking as well as discussions about regional collaboration so that this issue does not worsen and we can curb or reduce related crime activities,' he said, Bernama reported.
He also said that the resolutions achieved at the meeting would be presented to the AIPA General Assembly, to be held in Kuala Lumpur from Sept 17 to 22.

Anwar noted that Malaysia's diplomatic success has drawn global recognition, including praise from US President Donald J. Trump and leaders from Germany, France, and other Asian nations. US tariff rate has no impact on nation's commodities market, says Johari

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The 19% tariff imposed by the US on Malaysian goods will not affect the competitiveness of Malaysia's commodities in the global market, says plantation and commodities minister Johari Ghani. He said this was because the tariff remains competitive compared with other Asean nations, including Indonesia, which also faces the same tariff rate, Bernama reported. 'We're almost on par with the lowest rates in Asean. For example, Indonesia is the world's top producer of palm oil, and we're number two. 'It is also subject to the 19% rate. So for us, 19% is fair. It's not a problem,' he was quoted as saying, after attending the Pasir Gudang Umno delegates' meeting today. Yesterday, the US announced the imposition of a 19% reciprocal tariff on imports from Malaysia, effective Aug 8, a reduction from the previously proposed 25%. In response, investment, trade and industry minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz said Malaysia will advocate for 0% tariffs on commodities such as cocoa, rubber and palm oil, similar to the 0% rate enjoyed by the semiconductor and pharmaceutical sectors.

The group included the military attache of Malaysia, the current chair of Asean, as well as Vietnamese and Philippine assistant military attaches, said Cambodian Defence Ministry's Undersecretary of State and Spokesperson Maly Socheata. "Cambodia stands ready to cooperate with the observation group led by Malaysia to monitor the implementation of the ceasefire," Socheata said. On July 24, armed clashes erupted between Cambodian and Thai soldiers in border areas. The two countries agreed on an immediate and unconditional ceasefire on July 28, taking effect at midnight of the same day. - Xinhua
