As a young woman, Anderson's fresh face, dimples and big, sparkling eyes epitomized the American beauty standards of her time. She got her start in acting on television shows in the mid-1970s.
Her big break came in 1978 when she was cast as Jennifer Marlowe, a receptionist, on 'WKRP in Cincinnati.'

The show, which aired on CBS from 1978 to 1982, was about an easy-listening local radio station in Cincinnati that switched to a rock format.

Her role earned her three Golden Globe nominations as well as two Emmy Award nominations. She later appeared in two episodes of a sequel, 'The New WKRP in Cincinnati,' which aired from 1991 to 1993.
Anderson's seemingly ditsy, bombshell character was anything but, and her performance as Jennifer showed that looks and smarts could go together.
'I was against being like a blonde window dressing person, so I made my feelings known,' she said on Australian television in 2017. 'And as we know, Jennifer was the smartest person in the room.'
'She just turned into a great groundbreaking kind of character for women to be glamorous and smart,' Anderson added.

Her trademark blond locks were not her natural hair color, and she initially had conflicted feelings about them. Anderson had been a brunette for most of her life, including during her early acting career, and worried that she would not be taken seriously as an actress if she dyed her hair.
'I was very much on the fence about it,' she said in the interview.
She entered into a relationship with actor Burt Reynolds, who would become her third husband, in 1982 when they were filming 'Stroker Ace,' a comedy surrounding car racing.
Anderson played a 'rather sweet, Marilyn Monroe-like turn as a virginal public relations woman' who was the love interest of Reynolds' character, according to The New York Times' review of the film.
The couple married in 1988 and adopted a son, Quinton Reynolds.
The union ended in 1993, in one of the most acrimonious splits Hollywood had seen, and one that would serve as tabloid filler for decades to come, with both Reynolds and Anderson jabbing at each other over the years in interviews.
In 2015, the gossip website TMZ reported that Reynolds had finally paid off his settlement to Anderson.
'It was one of the longest and nastiest divorces in Hollywood history,' the website wrote.
'The truth is,' Reynolds wrote in a memoir released that same year, 'I never did like her.'
The two seemed to have patched things up before Reynolds' death in 2018.
'We were friends first and friends last,' Anderson said in 2019. 'It's time to move on.'
In 2008, Anderson married her fourth husband, musician Bob Flick, who was a founding member of the 1960s folk group the Brothers Four.

The pair had met more than four decades prior, as part of a fan photo opportunity for Flick's band on May 17, 1963. Exactly 45 years later, they cut into a wedding cake decorated with that first photo of them.
In addition to Quinton Reynolds and Flick, Anderson is survived by her daughter, Deidra Hoffman, her stepson, Adam Flick, two granddaughters and two step-grandchildren.
Over the decades, Anderson amassed more than 60 acting credits.
In 1980, Anderson starred in the biographical drama and made-for-TV movie 'The Jayne Mansfield Story' about the actor of the same name opposite a young Arnold Schwarzenegger as Hungarian actor and bodybuilder Mickey Hargitay.
She continued working well into her 70s. In 2023, she appeared in the Lifetime movie 'Ladies of the '80s: A Divas Christmas,' which follows five soap opera actresses who reunite to shoot a Christmas episode.
Anderson remained true to her early television persona well into her later years, still donning a well-kept head of bleach-blond hair.
At the premiere for the 2023 film, she reflected on acting in the 1970s and '80s versus in more recent times.
Young actors in the 21st century could be 'chameleon-like,' she said, whereas in her generation, 'everybody had an image and you stuck with your image.'
She added: 'We were kind of put into our image. Into our Loni-suit.'

LONDON (AP) — It's only rock 'n' roll, but it's messy. A guitar once played by two members of the Rolling Stones is at the center of a dispute between the band's former guitarist Mick Taylor and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The 1959 Gibson Les Paul was donated to the Met as part of what the New York museum calls 'a landmark gift of more than 500 of the finest guitars from the golden age of American guitar making.' The donor is Dirk Ziff, a billionaire investor and guitar collector. When the Met announced the gift in May, Taylor thought he recognized the guitar, with its distinctive 'starburst' finish, as an instrument he last saw in 1971, when the Stones were recording the album 'Exile on Main St.' at Keith Richards' rented villa in the south of France. In the haze of drugs and rock 'n' roll that pervaded the sessions, a number of instruments went missing, believed stolen. Now, Taylor and his team believe it has reappeared. The Met says provenance records show no evidence the guitar ever belonged to Taylor. 'This guitar has a long and well-documented history of ownership,' museum spokesperson Ann Bailis said. Taylor's partner and business manager, Marlies Damming, said the Met should make the guitar 'available for inspection.' 'An independent guitar expert should be able to ascertain the guitar's provenance one way or the other,' she said in a statement Tuesday to The Associated Press. While its ownership is contested, there's no disputing the instrument's starring role in rock history. It was owned in the early 1960s by Keith Richards, who played it during the Rolling Stones' first appearance on 'The Ed Sullivan Show' in 1964. The Met says that performance 'ignited interest in this legendary model.' The guitar – nicknamed the 'Keithburst' – was also played by guitar legends Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page. Taylor says he got it from Richards in 1967, two years before he joined the Stones, replacing original member Brian Jones. Jones died in 1969. Taylor left the band in 1974, reuniting with them for the Stones' 50th anniversary tour in 2012-2013. Jeff Allen, who was Taylor's manager and publicist for decades from the 1990s, said Taylor 'told me he got it as a present from Keith,' and also mentioned the theft. 'Mick did tell me that the guitar solo that he became quite famous for, on 'Can't You Hear Me Knocking,' was with the Les Paul that got stolen,' Allen said. The Met's records say the Les Paul was owned by Richards until 1971, when it was acquired by record producer and manager Adrian Miller, who died in 2006. The guitar has changed hands several times since then, and reappeared twice in public. It was put up for auction by Christie's in 2004, when it failed to sell. Ziff bought it in 2016, and loaned it to the Met in 2019 for an exhibition titled 'Play it Loud: Instruments of Rock & Roll.' It's unclear what will happen next. The Met, which plans to open a new gallery dedicated to its collection of American guitars, says it has not been contacted by Taylor or his representatives.

LONDON (AP) — Ozzy Osbourne died of a heart attack and had coronary artery disease in addition to suffering from Parkinson's disease for years, his death certificate said. The singer had suffered from coronary artery disease as well as Parkinson's, according to the certificate filed at a register office in London and obtained by The New York Times on Tuesday. Osbourne died on July 22 at 76. An email from The Associated Press requesting confirmation from the registry office in Hillingdon Council in northwest London, which covers the district where the Black Sabbath singer was reportedly officially pronounced dead, was not immediately returned. Osbourne's representatives didn't immediately return the AP's emailed requests for comment. The document was submitted by Osbourne's daughter Aimée Osbourne the New York Times reported. Osbourne died of '(a) Out of hospital cardiac arrest (b) Acute myocardial infarction (c) Coronary artery disease and Parkinson's disease with autonomic dysfunction (Joint Causes),' the certificate states. Osbourne, also a somewhat unexpected reality TV star, announced in 2020 that he had Parkinson's disease after suffering a fall. In announcing his death, his family asked for privacy and said that he was with relatives when he died. Fans came out in droves from across the country to mourn his death in his hometown of Birmingham last week. Osbourne had his final show there just weeks before his death, as admirers watched the heavy metal icon perform while seated on a black throne. 'I don't know what to say, man, I've been laid up for like six years. You have no idea how I feel — thank you from the bottom of my heart,' Osbourne said during his performance. 'You're all … special. Let's go crazy, come on.'

Newly released books often dominate celebrity book clubs, but every now and then, an older title slips through the cracks. Oprah Winfrey is the champion of one of those books this month. 'Bridge of Sighs' by Richard Russo, originally published by Penguin Random House in 2007, is the August pick for Oprah's Book Club. Russo is the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of 'Empire Falls' and over a dozen other works. 'Bridge of Sighs' follows a small-town American man and his wife who are preparing to embark on a family vacation to Italy. Winfrey calls it a 'classic summer read.' Oprah's Book Club pick for August: 'Bridge of Sighs' by Richard Russo 'Bridge of Sighs' is a multigenerational story about family and destiny in the Lynch family, convenience store owners in small-town New York.
