But Leclerc himself had found it hard to progress, and Hamilton had been just 0.155secs adrift of his team-mate in the first session.The past two races have seen a stall in the positive momentum Hamilton had been building after a difficult start to his Ferrari career.Since Miami in early May, there has been little to choose between the two drivers in qualifying, and Hamilton out-qualified Leclerc in three of the four races before Belgium, a week before qualifying.Two errors of different kinds in the qualifying sessions for the sprint and grand prix at Spa made Hamilton look uncompetitive when he was anything but.Hamilton was a match for Leclerc on pace in Belgium, but an off followed by a spin caused by a combination of factors relating to a new braking material saw him out in the first session in sprint qualifying, and the same thing happened when he misjudged the exit of the 180mph+ swerves at Eau Rouge and went slightly outside track limits in qualifying for the grand prix.Even with the problems in Belgium and Hungary, and the need to adapt to a new car of very different characteristics at the start of the season, Hamilton's average qualifying deficit to Leclerc is 0.146 seconds this year.That's not what Hamilton would expect of himself, but it should be viewed in the context of that Ferrari - and many others in F1 - regard Leclerc as the fastest driver over a single lap in the world.Hamilton's critics point to his struggles against George Russell in his final season at Mercedes last year.The 40-year-old has found the ground-effect cars introduced into F1 in 2022 do not fit his late-braking style as well as the previous generation of cars. And it does remain a mystery that he has not been able to adapt as well as would have been expected, or apparently as well as other drivers.But Vasseur rejected any idea that he might be worried about Hamilton's situation."He's demanding," Vasseur said, "but I think it's also why he's seven times world champion, that he's demanding with the team, with the car, with the engineers, with the mechanics, with myself also. But first of all he's very demanding with himself."
What does his former boss think?
Toto Wolff, Hamilton's former team boss at Mercedes, was asked about Hamilton's downbeat self-assessment."That is Lewis wearing his heart on the sleeve," he said. "It's what he thought very much when he was asked after the session. It was very raw."He was doubting himself, and we had it in the past when he felt that he underperformed his own expectations and your team-mate is on pole, and he's been that emotionally transparent since he was a young boy or young adult."As for Hamilton's general performances, Wolff said: "He's the GOAT, and he will always be the GOAT, and nobody's going to take that away. That's something he needs to always remember, that he's the greatest of all times."Lewis has unfinished business in Formula 1. In the same way that Mercedes underperformed over this latest set of regulations since 2022, we kind of never got happy with ground-effect cars. And in the same way, it bit him."Maybe it's linked to driving style. So he shouldn't go anywhere. Next year is brand new cars, completely different to drive, new power-units that need an intelligent way of managing the energy."Can Hamilton still win that elusive eighth title, Wolff was asked?"If he has a car underneath him that he has confidence in, that does what he wants, then yes," he replied."If he has a car that it's not giving him the feedback that he wants, and that was the Mercedes of the past few years, and that seems to be the Ferrari, and even worse, then not."But you ask me whether he has it, he definitely has it."

Crystal Palace have distanced themselves from the UEFA Conference League – just hours after being drawn in the competition's play-off round. On Monday afternoon, Palace's official website briefly published an article detailing their potential opponents in Europe. Monday's draw paired the Eagles with either Norwegian side Fredrikstad or Danish club Midtjylland, with the first leg scheduled for August 21 at Selhurst Park and the return fixture a week later on August 28. But by Monday evening, that article had been deleted. The original link now returns a 404 error, reading: 'The page you're looking for has either been moved, deleted or simply doesn't exist.' In addition, no European dates are listed on the club's online fixture schedule. The removal of the content underlines Palace's resistance to playing in the Conference League, with the club still fighting to overturn their controversial demotion from the Europa League. Palace have taken UEFA to the Court of Arbitration for Sport after being bumped down a tier due to multi-club ownership rules. The club were removed from the Europa League because American businessman John Textor — through his Eagle Football Holdings group — held a 43.9 per cent stake in Palace while also owning 77 per cent of French side Lyon. But Palace have since deleted any mention of the Conference League draw from their website Both clubs had qualified for the Europa League, and UEFA rules prohibit two teams under the same ownership or influence from competing in the same European competition. With that in mind, UEFA chose to keep Lyon in the tournament and demoted Palace to the Conference League. Lyon were deemed the 'priority club' due to Textor's majority control, and because UEFA's MCO rules state that the club with the higher domestic league finish retains its place. Lyon had finished sixth in Ligue 1, while Palace were 12th in the Premier League — even though Palace qualified via the FA Cup. Palace argue that UEFA's application of the MCO regulations contradicts its own competition rules, and have taken their case to CAS, where a hearing will take place on Friday, with a verdict expected next Monday. Palace say Textor had no controlling interest in the club, with only 25 per cent voting rights, and that the issue has since been resolved — with New York Jets owner Woody Johnson signing a legally binding agreement to buy the shares, pending Premier League approval. Speaking to Reuters last month Textor said: 'Honestly, I am stunned. We did everything possible to separate from the club, as UEFA would ask, with a sale process that began before the deadline, and a sale that will occur well before the draw. Now we have sold out of a club that I love, to help Palace fans continue this dream year, only to have another off-the-pitch decision lay waste to an historic sporting victory.' Club chairman Steve Parish also hit out at the ruling, calling it 'a terrible injustice.' He told Sky Sports: 'Everyone knows we're not part of a multi-club set-up. We're caught up in a rule that wasn't put there for us. This is a ludicrous decision. We will ask the appeal court to listen to our argument.' Palace also believe they were treated more harshly than Nottingham Forest, who were granted extra time to adjust their ownership structure to avoid a potential conflict with Olympiacos, also owned by Evangelos Marinakis. In the end, Olympiacos qualified for the Champions League, meaning no clash with Forest ever materialised. Forest, who initially qualified for the Conference League, have been promoted to the Europa League, subject to Palace's appeal outcome. Mail Sport understands Forest will send legal representatives to the CAS hearing to defend their place in the competition. The case is part of a broader crackdown by UEFA on multi-club ownership. Previously, clubs like Manchester City and Girona, and Manchester United and Nice, were allowed to compete in Europe by placing one club in a blind trust, preventing any operational crossover. But UEFA has signalled this will no longer be a viable long-term solution. UEFA quietly moved the compliance deadline forward from June 1 to March 1 for the 2024–25 season — and Palace argue that they were caught out by this change, having only reached the fifth round of the FA Cup by the March deadline and still being uncertain of European qualification.

Emma Raducanu hires ‘best coach in the world'
Emma Raducanu has scored a coaching coup by making an agreement with Francis Roig, a former top-60 player who was part of Rafael Nadal's coaching team for 17 years. Raducanu 's long roster of previous coaches includes a number of highly respected names, but no one who has spent so much time working alongside a tennis legend. A 57-year-old from Barcelona, Roig has not coached on the WTA Tour before. After ending his time with Nadal in 2022 – because, in his own words, 'I felt like I needed a new challenge in my life' – he spent the best part of a year with former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini. The fact that Roig has signed up with Raducanu for the rest of 2025 speaks for the potential that he must see in her. According to sources, the pair began talking about a collaboration during this summer's Wimbledon, and then did a coaching trial before Raducanu entered the American hard-court swing. Raducanu is well known for being a keen student of the game, and for having a knack for picking up new skills quickly. As a result, she should benefit from working with a man who – according to Nadal's biographer Christopher Clarey – 'is an excellent swing doctor, adept at fixing glitches in strokes.' In the same recent book on Nadal – which is entitled The Master – Clarey quotes the former Spanish No 2 Feliciano Lopez, who describes Roig as a uniquely skilled observer. 'Technically I think he's the best coach in the world,' Lopez said. 'He doesn't use that much video analysis, but he sees things that the rest of the coaches don't see. He's able to see things in Rafa's forehand or movement that no other guys would notice, and it allowed them to be very specific and precise.' As Clarey's book goes on to explain, 'Roig provided Rafael with another voice on tactics and technique for nearly 20 years, helping him in particular with his volleys and slice backhand.' Roig is understood to have recently joined Raducanu in Cincinnati, where she is scheduled to play in the final build-up tournament before the US Open. The concluding grand-slam event of the tennis year – which she famously won in 2021 – is set to begin in three weeks' time. While Raducanu's path has been a bumpy one in recent seasons, she is showing signs of improving her consistency, both in terms of fitness and form. Since teaming up with long-time associate Mark Petchey in Miami in March, she has won 20 of 24 matches against opponents ranked outside the top ten, and generally avoided the sort of niggling injuries that have dogged her progress over the last four years. The problem has been her inability to defeat the elite, as demonstrated by her 0-6 record against top-tenners in that time. This is where Roig's input could be particularly useful. While consistent and disciplined from the back of the court, Raducanu is not as physically imposing as most of the leading players, and often lacks the weight of shot to trouble them. Nevertheless, her ranking now stands at No 33 in the world – the highest it has been since the points from her US Open triumph dropped off in September 2022 – and a strong campaign in Cincinnati could potentially earn her a seeding at Flushing Meadows this year. Her form across the Atlantic has been promising so far, with three wins in Washington and two in Montreal, although she was given a 6-2, 6-1 schooling by this year's Wimbledon runner-up Amanda Anisimova in her most recent match. Raducanu had previously been working with Petchey for much of this season, but their arrangement had been constrained by his long-standing broadcasting arrangements. Petchey made it clear that would not sacrifice his commentary career in order to become her full-time coach. Before that, Raducanu had spent the 2024 season with Nick Cavaday – formerly the director of tennis at her childhood academy in Orpington – before he was forced to step down in February by chronic health issues. The full roll-call of coaches from her professional career now features at least eight names, and includes Nigel Sears, Andrew Richardson, Torben Beltz, Dmitry Tursunov and Sebastian Sachs. There was also a brief interlude in Indian Wells this year where Vladimir Platenik sat in her player box while she lost a first-round match against Japan's Moyuka Uchijima.

Will Wright, 17, almost caps dream Liverpool debut with an Anfield goal - just after Reds beat Arsenal to sign the forward from Salford City
New Liverpool signing Will Wright came close to making an instant impression on fans just days after signing for the club. The Premier League champions had officially announced Wright's signing from League Two side Salford City earlier on Tuesday.
