Mumbai Metro: MMRDA installs 8 U-girders overnight at Kapurbawdi station on Line 4

Indian Express03-06-2025
In a major feat, eight U-girders were installed overnight at Kapurbawdi station, a key interchange point on the soon-to-open Mumbai Metro Line 4 from Wadala to Gaimukh.
The installation is an important milestone in the completion of the 35.2-km fully elevated corridor being undertaken by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).
According to MMRDA, the operation was conducted during the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday, and included the positioning of girders weighing nearly 98 metric tonnes each, adding up to a total of approximately 783 metric tonnes.
It was executed carefully and with accuracy amid the flow of traffic.
The operation was conducted across two spans, supporting both the up and down corridors.
Kapurbawdi station, located on Ghodbunder Road in Thane, will serve as an important link between Metro Line 4 and the proposed Metro Line 5 (Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan).
Once operational, this multi-level interchange will significantly ease travel across Mumbai's extended suburbs and reduce traffic congestion on roadways.
'The station is being constructed as a new 185-metre-long elevated level with improved facilities to handle high-density Metro traffic. Its development sits within MMRDA's overall vision of bringing mobility solutions across the city closer together to facilitate quicker, greener commuting,' an MMRDA official said.
More than 90 workers — riggers, skilled and unskilled labour, and traffic management officials — worked together to make this happen with the help of high-capacity cranes, multi-axle trailers, pullers, and lifting gear.
Traffic officials were also kept informed to cause the least amount of inconvenience to commuters along Ghodbunder Road.
Metro Line 4 will revolutionise east-west mobility, connecting Central Mumbai to Thane and beyond.
It will have 32 stations, an automated train system, and energy efficient infrastructure.
Upon completion, it will decrease travel time by 50-75 per cent on major routes and provide a clean and reliable alternative to road transport.

Metro works & waterlogging put Old City in unending jams

Bhopal: A major traffic jam occurred in the Old City areas from Bharat Talkies Square to Hamidia Road on Friday. The traffic congestion in this area has become a regular problem due to the ongoing Metro Project work and waterlogging. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Traffic cops maintained that waterlogging at Alpana Trisection and the closure/diversion of the road from Bharat Talkies towards Pul Bogda due to ongoing Metro work were the main reasons for the traffic congestion. Due to the diversion, the volume of traffic on the road from Sangam Trisection towards Bajaria increased, adding to the traffic woes. A commuter, Rizwan, told TOI that there was a heavy traffic jam from Bharat Talkies Square to Hamidia Road between 4 pm and 6 pm. He remained stuck in the jam for more than an hour. Long queues of vehicles were seen on the road from Bharat Talkies to Alpana Trisection and further on Hamidia Road. People trying to go to the railway station were stuck in the jam. Cars, auto-rickshaws, loading vehicles, low-floor buses, and two-wheelers were all stuck in the jam. Being a major commercial area of the city, the traffic volume on these roads remains high. Apart from that, being the peak traffic hours, the situation further aggravated. Another commuter, Vishal, told TOI that he was stuck in the jam for more than an hour in his car. The vehicles moved at a snail's pace due to the congestion. In the absence of a proper road divider, vehicles, especially two-wheeler riders, stuck their vehicles in any available free space, worsening the situation. A senior traffic cop told TOI that traffic cops remain deployed in the area at Bharat Talkies Square, Alpana Trisection, and other major points to manage and regulate traffic flow. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now However, the volume of traffic remains so high in the area that even if a single vehicle driver makes a wrong move, the vehicles driving behind immediately get stuck in the jam. Additional DCP (Traffic) Basant Kaul said that waterlogging and diversion due to the ongoing Metro Project caused traffic congestion in the area. Traffic police raised the issue of waterlogging in the high-level meeting chaired by Bhopal MP Alok Sharma at the Old Police Control Room recently. The issue is being addressed, and a permanent solution for the waterlogging problem is being taken by the agencies concerned.

Kolkata Police starts fresh vehicle count at Chingrighata

1 2 Kolkata: The Kolkata Traffic Police has begun a new round of counting of vehicles at Chingrighata following multiple changes in traffic flow towards Sector V from the Kolkata side. At present, the 'traffic tails' reach Metropolitan. Previously, it would reach up to Ambedkar Setu during peak morning hours. Senior officers said the audit will help them assess whether traffic blocks for construction of the underpass, a Bailey bridge, the expansion of the main crossing and upcoming Metro work would affect the traffic flow or not. Recently, Kolkata Traffic Police decided not to allow any 16-seater and 26-seater vehicle — usually the app-based minibuses carrying IT employees to the IT sector and back towards Howrah and Behala-Joka — to use the Maa Flyover. With app buses from Behala and Howrah forced to move below the flyover, travel time has increased by at least an hour. On top of that, they are also not being allowed to take the Chingrighata Flyover. This has led several Sector V-New Town-Rajarhat office-goers to opt for their own two-wheelers or four-wheelers or app bikes, leading to a rise in private vehicles in the area. "We might revisit this policy after the counting is completed," said a Lalbazar source. The per-minute traffic volume discharge at the Metropolitan end of Maa Flyover during office hours is now back to the pre-Covid era. "We have 350 plus vehicles per minute now on this stretch after vehicles get over the 8 km stretch in a jiffy," said a traffic police source. The police stated that these app-based minibuses occupy wider space and often tend to cut lanes even when they do not overspeed. "There are three key corners where vehicles take sharper turns on the flyover. These are places where these vehicles often create hurdles for others to negotiate space," stated an officer. The police have already allowed special concessions for these vehicles to take a right turn from under the Chingrighata Flyover towards Sector V instead of Chingrighata Flyover to decongest the flyover.

Can't Charge, Can't Scan: QR Codes, Chargers Both Dead at Metro EV Points

1 2 Nagpur: A number of EV charging stations installed at Nagpur Metro stations are lying defunct or showing persistent malfunction errors, leaving motorists frustrated, as reported by TOI earlier on February 12. However, now even the few that appeared functional are of little use, as their QR codes — required to initiate the charging process — are either faded, torn, or missing. A TOI visit to several Metro stations, including Khapri, Rahate Colony, Airport, Jaiprakash Nagar, and Chhatrapati Square, revealed that nearly half of the EV charging stations were either non-functional or had torn and faded QR codes, making them unusable. While the infrastructure was installed to promote green mobility, on-ground usability remains poor. Motorists and commuters say there is no backup mechanism in place if the QR code fails to scan. With EV usage on the rise in the city, users say the lack of maintenance at these high-traffic public locations is defeating the purpose of building such facilities in the first place. As per the information shared by MahaMetro, a total of 100 EV charging stations have been installed so far, out of which 73 were commissioned. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 유일한 공식 무료 SOC 게임! 설치도 없습니다! 경복의 바다 게임 플레이 Undo The remaining are still undergoing commissioning. Officials said that all commissioned chargers are functional, except for a few combo units. However, they added that emergency push buttons are often accidentally pressed by the public, which may cause temporary disruption. Maintenance status, they claimed, changes daily depending on ongoing technical work. You Can Also Check: Nagpur AQI | Weather in Nagpur | Bank Holidays in Nagpur | Public Holidays in Nagpur Metro officials confirmed that these stations are open for both two and four-wheelers, with all 73 operational stations supporting both categories. They added that the stations are owned and operated by Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), with whom MahaMetro signed an agreement on December 31, 2020. The first charger was commissioned the same month at Airport Metro Station. EV owners hoping to charge their vehicles at these stations, however, continue to report issues. "Even if the machine works, the QR code is either scratched off or faded completely. You can't even scan to start charging. Hence, now I leave home by making up my mind that I won't be able to charge my vehicle anywhere else," said Akash Wankhede, a two-wheeler EV owner who often witnesses the defunct condition of the stations. The QR code is critical to initiating the process. Users must scan it to be directed to the ElectreeFi app, where prepaid payment is made before charging can begin. While MahaMetro clarified that an alternative app-based booking and payment process is available, it still revolves around the same QR-dependent interface. Officials said that EESL is responsible for maintenance and that routine checks and servicing are being carried out as needed. The last formal inspection was in May 2025, the document stated, despite the ground reality showing a stark difference. Despite these clarifications, users believe better ground-level upkeep is essential. "If QR codes aren't visible, the app and charger don't matter. It's just wasted infrastructure," said another EV owner. With EV adoption steadily rising in Nagpur, the public say that even small fixes like replacing damaged QR codes and maintaining the machines regularly can significantly improve user experience.
