'Unexpected medal' stokes Olympic flame for Penman
The 18-year-old, who was making his first senior individual appearance at a major event, narrowly missed out on gold in the men's 3m springboard final in Turkey.
"It was an unexpected medal," he told BBC Scotland. "Most of the other guys in the competition were a few years older.
"The main goal was to gain experience of being in that senior competition environment, so to come away with a medal is great.
"To go out there and do what I love doing and to bring the medal home, it gives me great confidence to go into the season and the coming years toward the Los Angeles Olympics [in 2028].
"GB is a great diving nation, so to make that team is a very difficult task but I think getting the silver puts me in good stead to push on further, to make those world teams and go to the Olympics."
Having shown real promise as a gymnast in his childhood, Penman made the sporting switch when his diving potential was spotted while in his final year at primary school in Aberdeen.
Two European silvers and a bronze followed at junior level.
"I think gymnastics built a great base for me to go into diving," explained the Aberdeen Grammar School pupil, who is on his way to Edinburgh University.
"I started diving a bit later, through a talent identification programme where coaches from the local club go round the schools recruiting future prospects.
"I quickly turned to diving once I realised the love I had for the sport."

LA 2028 Olympic organizers release first look at the flag football schedule
The 2028 LA Olympics has announced its schedule, and flag football will be held from Saturday, July 15, through Saturday, July 22, at Exposition Park Stadium. Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is now the face of the NFL's flag football initiative, having put the world on notice in an ad campaign featuring the NFL that debuted last summer. The campaign promoted the arrival of men's and women's flag football as an Olympic event in 2028. It's unclear if Hurts will be the quarterback for Team USA in four years. Still, the newly named global flag football ambassador could play in the Olympics and return to Philadelphia for training camp, thanks to the now-released eight-day schedule. If the game were held this summer, the finale would take place on the day Philadelphia was supposed to report to the NovaCare Complex for training camp. The first Eagles practice would take place the following day on July 23. Back in May, NFL owners unanimously voted to allow players to play flag football at the Olympics. The 2028 Summer Games will be held from July 14 to 30. 'There's more work to be done there,' NFL executive Jeff Miller said. 'It will certainly be an important topic of conversation. ... I would expect it to be an engaging and robust conversation on that topic.' With the news eliciting reactions from every corner of the NFL, we're looking at five Eagles who would flourish as members of Team USA. Flag Football Rules If passed, no more than one player from each team would be permitted to participate in the 2028 Olympics, plus each team's designated international player on his country's team, opening the door to a juggernaut roster. The framework would include 12-player rosters, a 50-yard field, and a 5-on-5 format, eliminating offensive and defensive lines. QB Jalen Hurts The Eagles' 2022 All-Pro is the face of the NFL and advocates for the sport. Last June, Hurts attended the Eagles Girls Flag Football League Championships at the NovaCare Complex to watch the title games and pose for pictures with the winning teams from Pennsylvania (Archbishop Wood) and New Jersey (Kingsway). RB Saquon Barkley A 2,005-yard rushing season, a reverse hurdle over an opponent, and one of the most electric athletes on the planet would flourish in open space. CB Cooper DeJean DeJean dominates in space. As a rookie in 2024, the cornerback was among the highest-rated players in the slot, holding opponents to 50 receptions. He had five pass breakups, and quarterbacks had an 82.2 passer rating against him. DeJean logged 51 tackles (38 solo) as a rookie, including 0.5 sacks, one forced fumble, and three fumble recoveries across 16 regular-season games in 2024. DeJean's biggest and best moment came in Super Bowl LIX against the Chiefs, when he picked off Patrick Mahomes for a 38-yard interception return for a touchdown on his birthday. WR DeVonta Smith Smith would be a star without the pads, a technician, and an elite pass catcher. Smith is known for his exceptional route-running abilities, particularly his ability to create separation from defensive backs. CB Kelee Ringo The former Georgia cornerback stands at 6 feet 2 inches and weighs 207 pounds, possessing the length, physicality, and speed to dominate the competition. Ringo's 40-yard dash time at the 2023 NFL Combine was 4.36 seconds, which was the fifth-fastest among all players at the combine and the fifth-fastest among cornerbacks.

2025 U.S. Classic gymnastics: how to watch, field, preview
The U.S. Classic, the top tune-up meet for the U.S. Gymnastics Championships, airs live on CNBC and Peacock on Saturday at 8 p.m. ET. NBC airs highlights Sunday at 4 p.m. ET. Hezly Rivera, the youngest member of the 2024 Olympic champion team, headlines the field that will compete in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. Rivera, now 17, is joined by 2024 Olympic alternates Leanne Wong, Joscelyn Roberson and Tiana Sumanasekera. Traditionally, not all of the top gymnasts compete on all four events at Classic, though at least Rivera is expected to do so. Gymnasts are preparing for the U.S. Championships from Aug. 7-10 in New Orleans. Then a selection competition will be held in late September and early October to determine the four-woman team for the World Championships in October in Indonesia. Simone Biles won five of the last six U.S. Classic meets dating to 2018, with Wong taking the other in 2022 during Biles' break from competition. Biles is now on another break from competition and has not announced whether she plans to return to bid for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. 2025 U.S. Classic Gymnastics Field Gymnasts are split between two sessions — the first on Saturday at 3 p.m. ET on the USA Gymnastics YouTube page and the second at 8 p.m. ET on CNBC and Peacock. Katie Taylor vs. Amanda Serrano 3 pulls 6 million viewers on Netflix, most-watched U.S. boxing event of 2025
An average audience of 6 million viewers watched the trilogy fight between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano on Netflix this past Friday, Most Valuable Promotions announced Monday afternoon. The historic all-women card, which broke the record for the most world championships contested on a single boxing event with 17, was streamed on Netflix in more than 200 countries. Advertisement Of the 6 million audience, 4.2 million of the viewers came from the United States, according to Netflix, making it one of the most-watched professional women's sports event of 2025 stateside — just behind the NCAA Women's March Madness final — and the most-watched professional boxing event in the U.S. in 2025 so far. Taylor defeated Serrano by majority decision to go 3-0 in their legendary series in front of a sell-out crowd of 19,721 at Madison Square Garden in New York. The live gate, which is the money earned from ticket sales, was $2.63 million — almost double that of the first Taylor vs. Serrano fight at the same venue in 2022, which generated a gate of $1.45 million. Advertisement The first two fights between the Irish and Puerto Rican greats were frontrunners for Fight of the Year in 2022 and 2024, respectively. The third fight was a far more technical affair, which suited the Olympic champion boxer Taylor. The first bout between Taylor and Serrano in April 2022 generated 1.5 million streams on the niche DAZN service. The rematch was on the mega Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul card this past November and was watched by around 50 million households, Netflix said.
