T.N. Planning Commission submits four reports to Chief Minister M.K. Stalin
One of the reports called for profiling and data organisation of all mines in Tamil Nadu urgently to facilitate large-scale land-use planning. The report 'Mapping Mines in Tamil Nadu — Assessing their Restoration Potential' said the process could begin with mines exceeding a certain size threshold. Calling for collecting the details of all mines and capturing drone images, it said detailed and up-to-date information about mines would streamline the study and planning process for restoration and land-use planning at the State-level.
Deputy Chief Minister and SPC's ex-officio Vice-Chairperson Udhayanidhi Stalin, SPC's executive chairperson J. Jeyaranjan, and senior officials submitted the reports to the Chief Minister.
The report 'Child Nutrition — Key Challenges and Strategies' recommended emphasis on improving linear growth among children to reduce stunting, with a focus on early-life interventions. It called for focus on the first 1,000 days of life but also stressed extending interventions to pre-pregnancy and adolescence. Regular monitoring of children for weight, height, and mid-upper arm circumference, improving dietary diversity for young children were among the recommendations.
The report 'Urban Growth and Thermal Stress: A Decadal Assessment of Built-up Area and Climate Interactions in Tamil Nadu' called for a comprehensive heat mitigation strategy for the State. It recommended community engagement, data-driven monitoring, block-level interventions, building construction guidelines, and urbanisation regulations. The regulations include urban infrastructure and land-use planning, urban building construction guidelines, hilly region construction regulations, rural area construction standards, and retrofitting existing structures, among others.
The 'Framework for Nature-based Solutions for Enhanced Urban Resilience in Tier 2 Cities of Tamil Nadu - Framework Report' said that Tamil Nadu reflected the global trends vividly with its Tier 2 cities experiencing accelerated economic and demographic expansion. 'This urban growth, however, is contrasted against rising climate risks including urban floods, decline in groundwater, cyclones and ecological fragmentation, calling for urgent, sustainable, and resilient urban planning approaches,' it said.
The proposed framework developed jointly by TN-SLURB, GIZ and CUBE presented a strategic and technical framework for mainstreaming NBS into the urban planning systems of Tier 2 cities in Tamil Nadu, it said.

The Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday (July 8, 2025) said the successful conduct of the Kumbabishekam of the Tiruchendur Murugan Temple after 16 years on Monday (July 7) was a testament to the efforts taken by the 'Dravidian Model government', led by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, to maintain law and order. In a statement issued in Chennai, the government said the DMK administration had left its mark through the arrangements made for the smooth conduct of the event. 'Compared to the Kumbh Mela, where many people lost their lives and devotees faced numerous difficulties at railway stations, the Kumbabishekam at Tiruchendur was conducted peacefully. The Chief Minister, Ministers including HR&CE Minister P.K. Sekar Babu, and officials have proved to be excellent organisers who ensured the safety of lakhs of people,' the statement said. The government added that the Chief Minister had instructed officials to make adequate arrangements, including providing sufficient buses and facilities, to help devotees visit Tiruchendur and return safely.

He placed his hand on her head and instructed officials to either waive the fees or have the government pay them directly. However, the path back to school was not smooth. A Principal's Resistance and Public Outrage Despite the CM's public assurance, the school—Saraswati Shishu Mandir in Pakkibagh—did not immediately comply. On July 5, when Pankhuri and her parents visited the principal with a fee-waiver request, she faced resistance. According to her family, the principal questioned why they went to the Janata Darbar and refused to admit her, allegedly saying that such actions would encourage others to do the same. The rejection devastated the family. Pankhuri returned home in tears. Her father Rajeev and mother Meenakshi, already grappling with years of economic hardship, were heartbroken. 'We had such high hopes after meeting CM Sir," said Rajeev. His post garnered over 74,000 reactions, amplifying Pankhuri's case and casting a spotlight on the delivery of welfare promises. Turning Down the Opposition's Offer On July 6, the Samajwadi Party's Lucknow office called Pankhuri's home, offering to take responsibility for her education. But her mother politely declined. 'CM Yogi gave us his word. We believe in that. We don't need anyone else's help," she said firmly. However, later that day, DIOS Dr Amarkant Singh intervened and instructed the school to proceed with her admission. The school finally relented. The Day Pankhuri Returned On July 7, Pankhuri wore her school uniform after four long months. As she touched her parents' feet to seek blessings, both Rajeev and Meenakshi had tears in their eyes. Her mother packed her favourite puri-sabzi in her tiffin, and her father walked her to school. Initially, she was called to the principal's office to complete the admission process for Class 7-B. But as she turned to leave, the principal surprised her by asking her to attend classes immediately. Pankhuri's return was met with cheers and tears. Friends like Anmol, Payal, and Sakshi ran to her and hugged her tightly. Some even asked for her autograph. 'You've become a celebrity after meeting CM Sir!" they exclaimed. Teachers welcomed her back warmly and reinstated her as the school's morning prayer leader—a role she once held due to her melodious voice. Though she missed the first two periods, Pankhuri quickly joined classes in Science, Sanskrit, Social Studies, and English. 'I only had a rough notebook today," she said. 'But Papa will buy the rest of the books tomorrow. I'll finish the missed syllabus in a month." Cracks in the Home Pankhuri's family lives in a crumbling house in Purdilpur. Once a garment trader in Chandigarh, Rajeev lost his livelihood during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020. On returning home, he slipped on algae-covered stairs and fractured his leg badly. He was bedridden for nearly four years. 'Doctors put a rod in my leg. I couldn't even step out to work." With no income, Meenakshi started working at a small shop. Rajeev now does minor repairs like fan rewiring and RO servicing from home. 'Most days, we struggle to afford vegetables," he says. Both children, Pankhuri and her younger brother Vansh, studied at the same school. But mounting debt meant the family could only afford one child's fees. Pankhuri's education was sacrificed—until she decided to fight back. A Promise Delivered 'I want to thank CM Sir. He made all this possible," said Pankhuri. 'He keeps his promises." Her father said, 'When she was younger, we called her 'pari'—our fairy. When her studies stopped, it felt like her wings were clipped. But now, she's flying again." Andhra Pradesh to review welfare schemes in aspirational regions under Viksit Bharat vision
VIJAYAWADA: Chairman of the Andhra Pradesh 20-Point Programme Implementation Committee, Lanka Dinakar, announced on Monday that a detailed review of Central and State welfare schemes in aspirational districts and blocks will be undertaken shortly. Addressing the media at the Secretariat, Dinakar said the review aligns with the Viksit Bharat – Swarna Andhra@2047 vision, aimed at fast-tracking development in the backward regions. He proposed that Sathya Sai, Prakasam, and Annamayya districts be added to the aspirational district list due to their socio-economic challenges. Currently, AP has three aspirational districts—Alluri Sitarama Raju, Parvathipuram Manyam, and Kadapa—and 15 aspirational blocks. He credited the progress made since 2014 to the 'double engine government' led by CM N Chandrababu Naidu and PM Narendra Modi. 'Extreme poverty has dropped from 16.2% in 2011-12 to 2.3% in 2022-23,' he said, attributing this to effective welfare delivery and DBT transfers totalling Rs 45 lakh crore to 55 crore Jan Dhan accounts. Dinakar emphasised the '3Cs' approach, 'Convergence, Collaboration, and Competition', as key to measurable development. He said the State would ensure the timely release of matching grants for central schemes.
