Gilas Pilipinas performance at the FIBA Asia Cup since 2017
Gilas Pilipinas is set to compete anew in the FIBA Asia Cup as it aims to win the gold medal and reassert its dominance in Asian basketball. The FIBA Asia Cup will run from August 5 to 17 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Finishing on the podium, however, is not new for the Philippines. In the Asian championships, the Philippines has already won five gold medals, the last one being in 1985. It has also secured four silver medals, two of which came from back-to-back editions in 2013 and 2015, and one bronze. However, since the tournament was renamed FIBA Asia Cup in 2017, the Philippines has yet to reach the semifinals. Here's a recap of Gilas Pilipinas' performance in the last two editions of the FIBA Asia Cup: FIBA Asia Cup 2017 – Philippines (7th Place) Photo: FIBA The Philippines had a perfect run in the group stage, defeating China (97–86), Iraq (84–68), and Qatar (80–74) to advance to the quarterfinals. In the quarters, however, Gilas fell to South Korea, 118–86, relegating the team to the classification round. Gilas then lost to host country Lebanon, 106–87, before ending its campaign on a high note with a 75–70 victory against Jordan to finish seventh. Roster: Jayson Castro, Terrence Romeo, Jio Jalalon, Roger Pogoy, Matthew Wright, Gabe Norwood, Calvin Abueva, Japeth Aguilar, Raymond Almazan, June Mar Fajardo, Christian Standhardinger, and Carl Bryan Cruz. Head coach: Chot Reyes. FIBA Asia Cup 2022 – Philippines (9th Place) Photo: FIBA Unlike in 2017, Gilas had a more challenging campaign in 2022 in Indonesia. In the group stage, the Philippines posted a 1–2 win-loss record. The team opened with a 95–80 loss to Lebanon, bounced back with a dominant 101–59 win over India, but then fell to New Zealand, 92–75. By finishing third in its group, the Philippines had a chance to reach the quarterfinals through the playoff round. However, Gilas lost to Japan, 102–81. The team finished ninth overall—marking the first time since 2007 that the Philippines missed the quarterfinals. The match against Japan also marked Akatsuki's first win over the Philippines since the 2010 Asian Games and the 2003 Asian Basketball Championships. Roster: Kiefer Ravena, Thirdy Ravena, Dwight Ramos, William Navarro, Francis Lopez, Geo Chiu, Carl Tamayo, SJ Belangel, Kevin Quiambao, Ray Parks, Poy Erram, RJ Abarrientos. Head coach: Chot Reyes. Gilas Pilipinas will open its campaign in the FIBA Asia Cup on early Wednesday (August 6, 2:00 a.m.) when it takes on Chinese Taipei. Will Ashley planning to work on an album
There's no doubt that Will Ashley is a talented singer. Fans who first heard his vocals during the Big Carnival Concert inside the "Pinoy Big Brother" house rediscovered his old song covers, and once he left Bahay ni Kuya, he dropped a cover of "Multo" by Cup of Joe on social media. So is an album something that the Nation's Son is keen to work on in the future? In an interview with GMA News Online on the sidelines of the GMA Gala 2025, Will said it is already on the pipeline for him. "Yeah, 'yung album pina-plan ko na siya. Hopefully by this month magawa ko na. Pero kung hindi, soon 'yun, soon," he said. "Actually nakasulat na ko ng mga kanta before pa and looking forward ako na malabas," he added. Asked if the songs are dedicated to anyone, Will said: "Ay wala, para sa sarili ko lang talaga." Aside from singing, Will also plays the guitar and has superb dancing skills. Inside Bahay ni Kuya, he is known as the Kaldag King for his signature move. The Sparkle actor will once again perform on stage at The Big ColLOVE fancon on Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. Tickets for the event are already sold out, but livestream access is available for purchase. Meanwhile, Will is part of the cast of "Bar Boys: After School." He will also appear on "Sanggang-Dikit FR" and an upcoming music video.
