Checking in
In December 2024, Australia ranked among the top five source markets for international tourist arrivals into Sri Lanka, according to a monthly report by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority. With SriLankan Airlines currently operating direct flights between Colombo and both Sydney and Melbourne, it's no surprise that when my partner and I arrive 2½ hours early at Sydney Airport, we find the check-in queue full. To our delight, every counter is staffed and the line moves steadily. Despite having booked our flights separately, we're allocated seats together with no fuss – thanks in part to an advance call to the airline's helpful customer service team. Seats secured and baggage dropped, we're off to snap obligatory pictures at the Sydney departure sign.

Dated seats and entertainment, but this business class can save you $2000

The airline: Hong Kong Airlines Route Sydney to Hong Kong, flight HX18 Frequency Daily Aircraft Airbus A330-300 Class Business; seat 19C, window Flight time 9 hours, 30 minutes. We arrive 20 minutes behind schedule. Checking in This is the inaugural flight out of Sydney for Hong Kong Airlines, which has previously only flown from the Gold Coast. As such, check-in is fairly slow as new staff are still learning the systems but my own check-in, via the business class lane, is swift. Lounge access is provided for business class passengers at The House, which passengers can also pay to enter if they're not flying business (or flying with a different airline entirely). Baggage In business class it's two pieces of checked luggage up to 32 kilograms each and two items (one larger, one small) for carry-on for a total of 15 kilos. The latter allowance lets me fly with carry-on only luggage for my short trip. Loyalty scheme Fortune Wings Club. The airline is not a member of any of the major alliances, but it does have a partnership with Virgin Australia, meaning Velocity members can earn and redeem points for flights on Hong Kong Airlines' network (excluding flights to North America for some reason). Brisbane news live: Stranded Qantas passengers are in the air

Hundreds of Qantas passengers who were stranded in Singapore for days after their flight to Sydney was repeatedly delayed, in a debacle complicated by earlier damage to another Qantas plane, are on their way back to Australia. QF82, which was supposed to leave Singapore for Sydney at 8.45pm on Monday, finally left at 12.55am on Thursday, with the plane due to arrive at 10.10am. Loading Passengers had earlier been told they would fly home at 9am on Wednesday, but that flight was cancelled. A note given to passengers said the A380 they were meant to fly on was still experiencing mechanical issues. 'While our engineers continue to work on the original aircraft in Singapore, your flight will now be operated by a replacement aircraft,' it said. It came after an aerobridge rammed into a Qantas A380 superjumbo engine at Sydney Airport, delaying a long-haul flight to Johannesburg by 21 hours for hundreds of passengers at the weekend.
