Deadline approaching for major women's amateur tournament at Seaton Carew GC
The groundbreaking event, being held at Seaton Carew Golf Club and Goswick Golf Links Golf Club, marks the region's first-ever women's golf World ranking tournament and £500 will be claimed by the winner.
The event has also been approved by the R&A for the awarding of World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) points, elevating its status among a select number of such tournaments held nationwide outside of county events.
The tournament is set to attract top amateur golfers from across the UK and beyond, and the deadline for entries has been extended to Monday, May 19.
Two of the north of England's premier links courses have combined to host this prestigious competition and the new trophy has been on show at Seaton Carew this week.
The 54-hole strokeplay championship, sponsored by Plastic Processing Limited, will take place on Tuesday, May 27 and Wednesday, May 28.
Seaton Carew GC's club secretary, Roy Leonard, said: 'This tournament represents an important step in the development of women's golf in the North of England.
MORE SPORT:'Players will have the opportunity to test themselves on two challenging and highly-respected links courses at Seaton Carew and Goswick, in an ideal warm-up for the St Rule Trophy at St Andrews, and we look forward to showcasing the future stars of the game.'
The tournament will reward top finishers with a prize fund, with the leading six scratch players receiving cash prizes of £500, £400, £350, £300, £250 and £200.
Additionally, the lowest net score for each of the three rounds will earn a £100 prize, although overall top finishers will not be eligible for individual round prizes.
This week saw the new trophy, funded by Plastic Processing Ltd, on display at Seaton Carew GC for the first time.
Patrick Connolly, director at the event sponsors, said: 'The unveiling of the new trophy at Seaton Carew Golf Club this week adds to the anticipation for the tournament.
'We're proud to support an event that will see such talented golfers competing for both the prestigious title and the prize winnings, as well as the valuable world ranking points on offer.'
With a maximum handicap index of 7.4 required for entry, and a field size limited to 60 players selected by handicap ballot, competition for places is expected to be strong.
* The entry fee for the North England Women's Amateur Championship is £60, and the deadline for entries is Monday, May 19.

This gay Olympic figure skater just proposed to his boyfriend and 'he said yes'
We could all use an injection of joy right now, and lucky for us, love is in the air! Out gay Olympic figure skater Paul Poirier just proposed to his boyfriend and shared the happy news with the rest of the world with a cute Instagram post of the two men showing off their new engagement rings. 'We did a thing (he said yes),' Poirier wrote on social media, announcing his engagement to boyfriend Kevin. Poirier's figure skating partner, Piper Gilles, was one of the first to congratulate the lovebirds, commenting, 'So happy for you two!! You've deserved all the love.' The 33-year-old world champion shared the news with those closest to him before making the announcement public. The couple has yet to announce a wedding date. 'It was a very casual proposal at home during our evening routine,' Poirier told Outsports. 'It was really nice to share that quiet moment together, and then to share the news with our families and closest friends. We're both very excited!' It takes a lot of guts to come out as an athlete. Luckily, more and more LGBTQ+ Olympic athletes are taking the plunge. In fact, four Olympic athletes kissed their partners in front of the world during the last Olympics, six lesbian couples who competed at the Paris Olympics, and gold medalist Jade Carey hard launched her new girlfriend just this past March. Poirier may be a fairly private person and a bit of an introvert, but he came out publicly back in 2021, a year ahead of going to the Beijing Winter Olympics. '[Being a gay athlete] hasn't been something that I've really talked about very much, especially in a public setting,' Poirier said at the time. 'I've had this attitude that my private life is my private life and my life outside of skating is my life outside of skating. I haven't necessarily allowed all of those things to [blend] together. I think with the lead-up to the Olympic Games in the next year, I definitely see opportunities to share what we do and who we are to a much wider audience, and that opportunity is not lost on me.' Poirier and Gilles are currently working to land a spot at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy. Tired O'Callaghan upset in women's 100m freestyle final
Mollie O'Callaghan has been pipped for gold in the 100m women's freestyle final, meaning her bid to surpass Ian Thorpe's world championships record will have to wait for another day. O'Callaghan entered Friday night's final in Singapore as the hot favourite and with the knowledge that a win would give her a total of 12 career gold medals at world championships - eclipsing Thorpe's Australian record of 11. "I'd be more than happy to see the record go tonight," Thorpe said just moments before the race started. But Dutchwoman Marrit Steenbergen was the party pooper, touching the wall 0.12 of a second ahead of Callaghan. Callaghan (52.67 seconds) was fourth at the turn, but fought back hard to push Steenbergen (52.55) right to the end. Callaghan's busy schedule counted against her. The 21-year-old, who dislocated her knee in January, won gold on the opening night as part of the women's 4x100m freestyle relay team. She then won individual gold in the women's 200m freestyle, and on Thursday night helped the women's 4x200m freestyle relay team reign supreme. Callaghan also had to qualify for the 100m freestyle final on Thursday night. "I'm tired. I'm not going to lie, last night was a big night. None of those girls did what I did last night," Callaghan told the Nine Network after her silver-medal performance. "I'm happy to walk away with a medal. Honestly, I would always love to win, but to get on the podium after such a shit show of a year, I'm pretty happy. "And it just shows the strength that I have and the work I can do in the future, knowing that I've barely done any training for this." O'Callaghan has already matched Thorpe's five Olympic golds. Retired swim great Emma McKeon holds the Australian record for most Olympic golds, six.
