Egyptian government reviews ICON's development plan for 7 state-owned hotels
The Prime Minister held a meeting to follow up on the plans for the hotels, describing them as having significant cultural value and promising market potential. He affirmed the meeting's purpose was to track the implementation of development strategies in partnership with the private sector.
'We are following up on the development plans for these historic hotels to raise their operational efficiency and maximise the return from these tourism assets in partnership with the private sector,' Madbouly stated.
The meeting was attended by Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Sherif Fathy, Minister of Public Business Sector Mohamed Shimy, Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade Hassan El-Khatib, and Hisham Talaat Moustafa, CEO and Managing Director of Talaat Moustafa Group Holding (TMG).
ICON, a subsidiary of TMG, has signed final agreements to acquire a 39% stake and full management rights in Legasi Hotels, a new company that owns the portfolio of seven hotels. The stake is set to increase to 51% within a specified contractual period, at which point the deal value will reach $800m.
The acquisition will be financed through ICON's internal resources and a capital increase of $882.5m from an international strategic investor, who will acquire a minority stake in ICON. TMG will retain its majority stake in the company.
TMG Holding has previously stated it expects revenues from the seven-hotel portfolio to double and exceed $250m by 2024.
The hotels included in the portfolio are Marriott Mena House Cairo, Marriott Omar Khayyam Zamalek, Mövenpick Resort Aswan, Sofitel Legend Old Cataract Aswan, Sofitel Winter Palace Luxor, Steigenberger Hotel Tahrir, and Steigenberger Cecil Hotel Alexandria.
Cabinet spokesperson Mohamed El-Homsany said the meeting reviewed ICON's plans for the hotels, which were part of the state's public offering programme. The initiative aligns with the government's 'State Ownership Policy Document' to maximise the value of state-owned tourism assets.
The spokesperson added that the ongoing development and modernisation work was discussed, which is part of a plan aimed at restoring the hotels while preserving their unique architectural and historic character. The efforts seek to enhance the properties' tourism value and attract a wider segment of tourists, supported by strong regional and global promotion.
El-Homsany added that the presented plans reflected significant investments being channelled into the hotels. He noted that the current phase represents a major step in renovating the properties and improving services to meet international hospitality standards, with significant returns expected for the state and investors.

Taarek Refaat Osama Rabie, Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) reaffirmed the canal's strategic role in global trade and its commitment to sustainable and secure navigation, as Egypt marks the 69th anniversary of the nationalization of the Suez Canal. 'We are committed to upholding our pivotal role in ensuring sustainability across global supply chains, and we operate in accordance with international charters and treaties, without compromising Egyptian sovereignty,' Rabie stated. The Suez Canal was nationalized on July 26, 1956, a landmark moment in Egypt's modern history that asserted national control over one of the world's most vital maritime corridors. Rabie praised the generations of Egyptian leaders and workers who have managed and modernized the canal since that time. 'We salute the pioneers who led the nationalization and laid the foundations of development. We continue their mission with more dedication and achievement,' he said. The SCA chief noted that canal operations are governed by a robust legal framework, particularly the Navigation Regulations and the 1888 Constantinople Convention, which guarantees freedom of navigation through the canal for all vessels in both peace and wartime. Under Egypt's stewardship, the canal has seen continuous upgrades to maintain its status as the shortest, fastest, and safest maritime route between East and West. Rabie pointed to recent development projects that have enhanced the canal's capacity, navigational safety, and competitiveness. Rabie also extended his gratitude to all SCA personnel and canal pilots, relaying personal appreciation from President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. He emphasized the professionalism of the canal's pilots, describing them as exemplary ambassadors of Egypt. 'Our pilots have consistently risen to the challenge, demonstrating exceptional dedication under all circumstances. Their professionalism ensures the safety and sustainability of navigation through the canal,' he added. As global shipping continues to face mounting challenges, from geopolitical disruptions to climate-related vulnerabilities, the Suez Canal remains a critical artery for international trade, handling over 12% of global commerce annually. Madbouly tours northwestern coast to open AOI Expo, promote desalination-driven agriculture
Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly began a tour of Egypt's northwestern coast on Saturday, starting with a visit to development and service projects in New Alamein City. Madbouly explained that the tour aims to follow up on strategic projects designed to enhance the region's investment value and economic potential. He noted that the area's rich tourism, agricultural, and industrial resources are being leveraged through the establishment of new urban communities and greater private sector involvement. As part of his visit, the Prime Minister inaugurated the Arab Organization for Industrialization (AOI) exhibition at North Square Mall in New Alamein, featuring products from ATICO Wood Industries and AOI's electronics factory. Accompanied by AOI Chairperson Mokhtar Abdel Latif, Madbouly toured the 650 sqm showroom, which presents Egyptian-made products under the theme 'Made in Egypt,' including electronic and household appliances, security systems, and modern wooden furnishings. Abdel Latif explained that the exhibition is part of AOI's broader marketing strategy to deliver high-quality, environmentally friendly, locally manufactured products aligned with the latest digital transformation trends. During the visit to AOI's wood products section (ATICO), Madbouly was briefed by Sherif Raafat, Executive Director of ATICO Wood Industries. Raafat showcased the variety of furniture on display and announced a partnership agreement with Romanian company Antares to manufacture office chairs and sofas locally in Egypt. He also highlighted the availability of attractive installment plans in AOI showrooms and a special public lottery for attendees of the opening event to win valuable prizes. While inspecting the exhibition, Madbouly examined several pieces of home and office furniture to check their quality and durability. The exhibition includes televisions, air conditioners, vacuum cleaners, fans, microwaves, receivers, LED lighting systems, surveillance cameras, computers, tablets, laptops, and mobile phones. Abdel Latif noted that, to mark the exhibition's launch, all products will be available at discounts of up to 50% for one week. As part of his visit to the Northwestern Coast, the Prime Minister also inspected the Research Pilot Plant for Seawater Desalination in New Alamein City. Madbouly reaffirmed the state's commitment to seawater desalination as a central pillar of sustainable development, emphasizing the importance of applying advanced technologies to boost efficiency and production. He highlighted the significance of ongoing research using desalinated seawater to cultivate various fruits and vegetables, describing it as a step toward maximizing the agricultural potential of coastal areas and expanding arable land to enhance food security. During his tour, Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities Sherif El-Sherbiny presented details of the research desalination plant's capabilities. He also explained ongoing coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation to conduct agricultural trials using desalinated water. El-Sherbiny noted that the Agricultural Research Center and the Desert Research Center are conducting studies on soil and water, and developing crop patterns for low-water-demand, short-cycle crops—particularly fruits and vegetables suited to the region's climate—as well as some strategic field crops. He added that the success of these experiments could open new avenues for agricultural investment in the North Coast, transforming parts of New Alamein into modern agricultural hubs using water-efficient irrigation and farming technologies based on desalinated seawater. Hossam Shawky, Head of the Desert Research Center, also presented several proposed crop combinations suitable for cultivation with desalinated seawater, along with their estimated water consumption rates.

Moody's Upgrades Turkey's Credit Rating to ‘Ba3' with Stable Outlook
Taarek Refaat Moody's Investors Service on Friday upgraded the country's credit rating to 'Ba3' from 'B1', citing an improved track record in monetary policy, easing inflation, and narrowing macroeconomic imbalances. The agency also revised Turkey's outlook to 'stable' from 'positive', indicating a more balanced view of the country's economic trajectory amid ongoing political and external risks. 'The upgrade reflects an increasingly credible track record of policymaking, particularly the central bank's commitment to a monetary policy framework that sustainably reduces inflationary pressures,' Moody's said in its statement. The upgrade comes just one day after the Central Bank of Turkey surprised markets by cutting its key interest rate by 300 basis points to 43%, resuming its monetary easing cycle after a brief pause due to political volatility earlier this year. Since President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's reelection in 2023, Turkey has reversed course from years of unorthodox economic management. The government has embraced more conventional policies, including aggressive interest rate hikes, tighter credit controls, and a return to market-based financial mechanisms. These efforts appear to be bearing fruit. Official data show that annual inflation dropped to 35% in June 2025, down sharply from 72% a year earlier. Meanwhile, the Turkish lira has shown signs of stabilization, and foreign currency reserves—once severely depleted—have started to recover. However, the outlook remains tempered by lingering political uncertainties. In March, investor sentiment was rattled after the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, a leading opposition figure and key challenger to Erdoğan. The incident triggered a sudden hike in interest rates and a temporary drain on foreign reserves. Despite such tensions, international agencies are recognizing Turkey's shift toward orthodox economic policy. Earlier this month, S&P Global Ratings affirmed Turkey's credit rating and also maintained a stable outlook. While the 'Ba3' rating marks an improvement, it remains within non-investment grade, commonly referred to as 'junk status.' Nevertheless, it signals that Turkey's creditworthiness is on the mend, potentially boosting investor interest and lowering borrowing costs for the government and private sector.
