Brendan O'Carroll says Mrs Brown's Boys storylines are ‘based on true events'

O'Carroll, 69, who is best known for playing the menacing matriarch, Agnes Brown, in the hit BBC comedy series, will reprise the role in a new miniseries.
The fifth series, which is due to air on August 1 on BBC One, follows Mrs Brown as her meddling – into the lives of her family and friends, takes her on a number of misadventures.

Speaking about the new series, O'Carroll said: 'Believe it or not most of the storylines are based on true events that either happened to my family or have been told to me by people about their families.
'Everybody has a story, and it's quite common for someone in a family to say in the middle of a family disaster, 'This is like an episode of Mrs Brown's Boys'.
'In every episode there is something that stands out for me. I love being Agnes Brown and I love her family, and her neighbours like Winnie and Birdy.'
The new series will see Mrs Brown as she becomes the subject of a podcast, helps Winnie pass her driving test and becomes the unexpected new member of a book club where she discovers a 'passion' for steamy fiction.
Mrs Brown's Boys was first broadcast on BBC One in 2011 and has since transmitted more than 50 episodes, including Christmas specials.

The Bafta-winning series is filmed in front of a studio audience which O'Carroll described as 'essential'.
He said: 'So many times, at the end of rehearsals for a particular episode, our director, Ben Kellett will say 'all this needs now is the audience' and he is so right.
'They follow every move, every line and add so much to our performances. We would be lost without them.'
The miniseries will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Friday August 1.

Suki and Eve's marriage implodes in early EastEnders BBC iPlayer release

Eve and Suki's marriage is on the line (Picture: BBC/Jack Barnes/Kieron McCarron) This article contains spoilers for tonight's episode of EastEnders, which airs at 7.30pm on BBC One or can be streamed now on iPlayer. Suki Panesar-Unwin (Balvinder Sopal) and wife Eve (Heather Peace) have come to blows over a plan to take custody of Avani Nandra-Hart's (Aaliyah James) unborn child. As viewers know, Avani confided in best mate Barney Mitchell (Lewis Bridgeman) that she thought she could be pregnant with twisted Joel Marshall's (Max Murray) baby. Her worst fears were realised when a test gave a positive result. Adamant that she wanted an abortion, Suki dropped a huge bombshell and proposed raise the child as her own. This was without addressing the situation with Eve first. When the idea was raised, Eve remained insistent that she never wanted children of her own, partly down to her mother's homophobic comments in her youth that made her believe that she wouldn't be a good mother. Suki urged her to put those concerns to one side, and just as she warmed to the idea, Avani burst in and assumed she'd agreed. Avani discovered she was pregnant (Picture: BBC/Jack Barnes/Kieron McCarron) Suki overstepped, telling Eve she reminded her of wicked ex-husband Nish (Picture: BBC/Jack Barnes/Kieron McCarron) In today's instalment, Eve was under the belief that Avani had purposely got pregnant in order to provide a child for Suki. She was furious at the thought of being deceived, and struggled to find a way to explain it. As tensions began to rise, she branded the behaviour as abuse. Suki was incredulous to see her wife escalating the row, comparing her attitude to wicked ex-husband Nish (Navin Chowdhry). With no resolution being found, Suki boldly announced that she would raise the baby on her own. After all, Avani was her family, not Eve's. A devastated Eve then headed to the pub to drown her sorrows, and a heart to heart with Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner). At one point, she considered telling Avani's parents Ravi Gulati (Aaron Thiara) and Priya Nandra-Hart (Sophie Khan Levy) about the unfolding situation, but decided instead to go home and face Suki. Avani staged an intervention, with Suki offering a heartfelt apology. But what will Eve do next? You'll have to tune in tonight to find out, or stream now on iPlayer! EastEnders legend rushed to hospital unconscious after being pushed

Oscar Branning (Pierre Moullier) makes a desperate attempt for cash in EastEnders next week – with one resident being hospitalised as a result of his actions. As viewers of the BBC One soap know, Oscar is desperate to evade thuggish associate Fat Mike (Tai Hilferink), who he grassed up to the police for stealing a car. In retaliation, Mike attempted to petrol bomb his house, and has continued to try and seek revenge by leaving a series of threatening messages and, in last week's episodes, left a knife in the kitchen chopping board as a stark warning of what he's capable of. After the two lads came face to face in Monday's instalment, a paranoid Oscar attacked a hooded figure in the hallway of sister Lauren's (Jacqueline Jossa) house, believing it to be Mike. …but it was Peter (Thomas Law)! In upcoming scenes, Mike is back on the scene and announces he needs £5,000 in exchange for Oscar's family's safety. At a loose end with where to find the cash, Oscar makes an attempt at forming a business deal with Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt), but his attempts fall flat and he has to confess all to Lauren. Will she offer to help? Across the Square, Patrick Trueman (Rudolph Walker) has been betting against his fiancée Yolande's (Angela Wynter) wishes, and is on cloud nine to see he and Howie Danes (Delroy Atkinson) have bagged a whopping £6,000! Yolande is furious – having already warned that she'd call off their upcoming wedding if she found him gambling again – but little does she realise, the money won't be staying in his hands for long. The family are all in The Vic when Oscar foolishly breaks into the Fox-Trueman household in a bid to steal the winnings, but is caught in the act by Patrick. Denise Fox (Diane Parish) and sister Kim (Tameka Empson) return from the pub and are shocked to discover what's happened. Concerns grow for Patrick when he's rushed into hospital, and as everyone keeps vigil at his bedside, Lauren is suspicious of Oscar's overwhelming worries for a man he doesn't really know. More Trending Later, realising he's planning to leave Walford, she confronts him with the stolen cash. BBC's new game show is perfect mix of The Traitors and Race Across The World and fans are 'obsessed'

Destination X launched on the BBC on Wednesday evening and fans are already hooked. The BBC launched its brand new travel game show, Destination X, on Wednesday evening with Gavin and Stacey star Rob Brydon as the frontman and viewers are already hooked after just one episode. Branded as the 'adventure of a lifetime' the intense competition teases a lucrative jackpot of £1000k for the contestants who can answer the number one question - "Where in the world am I?" ‌ Brydon's new reality show, which also has a US version hosted by Jeffrey D Morgan, sees 13 contestants piled onto a bus with blacked out windows as they are fed clues to figure out their exact location. At the end of each episode, the player who has the furthest away guess is dropped. ‌ The BBC is known for its strong track record of reality TV shows, with programmes like The Traitors and Race Across The World drawing in millions of viewers, and Destination X is now set to join their impressive list. ‌ Here's everything we know so far about the show and how fans have reacted to the first episode.. How are fans reacting? The first episode of Destination X aired on BBC One yesterday with the first two already on BBC iPlayer for the audience's viewing pleasure. Despite it being very early days, the programme has already made quite an impression on viewers as they watch contestants take their guess at marking X on the map. ‌ Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, one fan wrote:"Destination X is brilliant, right up my street". Another exclaimed: "Omg I'm absolutely hooked… flipping brilliant program". ‌ A third chimed in: "OBSESSED!!! Well done BBC, perfect show! Mix of Traitors and Race Across The World". Someone else branded it an "excellent opening episode" while another wrote: "Fantastic TV… The new Traitors". A fifth penned: "Confused. Addicted. And simultaneously finding a lot of the contestants quite attractive. Yep, Destination X is definitely the new The Traitors". ‌ Meanwhile the Gavin and Stacey host himself said: "I've never done a TV show on this scale before. "I loved the idea of it, the combination of having to work out clues as to where you are and having to get on with each other. It struck me as the best bits of The Traitors with the best bits of Race Across the World." However, not everyone was as impressed with the new show as one said it was a "bit too complicated and boring". ‌ Someone else agreed: "It was a bit of a slog". How can users play online? As the entire programme is a guessing game, even the audience at home can play along with the chance of winning the next best prize - bragging to your family 'I told you so' when you guess the correct geographical location. The BBC has also created a Destination X game site where you log in using your iPlayer account login. From there you can guess alongside the live episode of it through catch up. ‌ Just like the contestants on TV, those playing at home can also compete for hints and will be given a go at two mini games which will unlock further clues to the coveted geographical location. The BBC's website explains: "One sees them test their knowledge of Europe across five travel trivia questions. The other shows users an image of a famous landmark, and asks you to locate it on a map." You can access the site here. ‌ Who are the Destination X contestants? The show kicked off with a total of 13 contestants of different ages and backgrounds. ‌ These include a 23-year-old Economics graduate Ashvin, surf school director Ben, 42, Historian Chloe-Anne, 27, retired detective sergeant Claire, 51, and taxi driver Darren, 52. Meanwhile, Dawn, 33, is a care assistant who is hoping to win with her 'slightly sneaky side' while 62-year-old crime writer Deborah warns you have to have your 'wits about you'. ‌ Other contestants are 23-year-old e-commerce manager, James, from Manchester and Josh, 26, who is a pilot hoping to use the money to expand his flying skills. Judith, 27, is a nuclear engineer from Bristol while Madhi, 22, is a content creator from London hoping to try his luck at the game. Last but not least is endurance athlete Nick, 35, who has warned he is ready to 'stab people in the back' to get his hands on the cash. ‌ While, marketing executive Saskia, 25, describes herself as a 'determined, dedicated and devoted'. There are plenty of challenges along with unexpected twists and turns that the contestants will be dealt along the way. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community!
