Over 20,000 of those invited from rural areas in Tiruchi district to take part in the Organised Cancer Screening programme launched on May 12 have responded, and efforts are on to improve attendance in the coming weeks, officials have said.
The free programme is aimed at screening people aged over 18 for oral cancer and women aged over 30 for breast cancer and cervical cancer. Tiruchi was among the districts chosen for the first phase of the State Health Department initiative and was launched by Collector M. Pradeep Kumar at Kora Street Health and Wellness Centre, Gandhipuram, Woraiyur, on May 12.
'In the rural areas, approximately 60% of the invitees attended the screening camps conducted in 142 health and wellness centres. In due course, we hope these numbers will improve through inter-sectoral coordination and motivation of field staff,' a senior official from the District Health Office told The Hindu.
As per official records, 47,378 invitee cards were issued to residents in rural areas from May 12 to June 23, out of which, 28,709 attended the screening programme.
A total of 74 potential cases of cancer were referred to Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH) in Tiruchi for further treatment.
This included 31 cases that tested positive for breast cancer, followed by 29 for cervical cancer, and 14 for oral cancer.
Health authorities have stepped up efforts to increase awareness of the programme and enrol people under the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme.

Operating the Sigachi plant for 35 years without a single incident, says MD

Two days after a deadly explosion at Sigachi Industries' manufacturing unit in Pashamylaram, Hyderabad, which claimed at least 40 lives and left many injured, the cause of the blast remains unclear. The company on Wednesday denied that a reactor explosion was to blame. Highly placed sources in the State government, citing preliminary assessments, pointed to multiple safety lapses: a lack of adequate entry and exit points for workers, poor ventilation and alleged violations of setback norms, with the company reportedly utilising almost the entire land parcel. A senior official said the company was under the scanner and a government department had issued notices as recent as December 2024. The official, however, did not elaborate on whether the company responded or took any corrective action. Labour Minister G. Vivekanand told The Hindu that the government would convene a meeting with representatives of pharma companies to review safety protocols in the wake of the explosion. The focus now is to ensure that all Red Category industries have adequately trained personnel handling each department, he said. In a written response to The Hindu's queries, Sigachi Industries maintained that it had all the required permissions and permits to operate. 'We have been operating this plant for 35 years without a single incident,' the company stated. On government officials' observations as well as the FIR in the case highlighting alleged laxity on the part of the company to upgrade to new equipment, the company said the unit is one of the earliest plants that Sigachi commissioned. 'Over the years, Sigachi has continuously invested in retrofitting, equipment upgrades, structural reinforcements and compliance-based audits to ensure the facility meets both national and international safety standards. We are devastated by this [incident], given this record,' the company said. The Hyderabad unit has been certified ISO 45001:2018 international standard for occupational health and safety management systems that helps businesses create a safer and healthier workplace. As part of the certification, regular audits are conducted. 'There were no mission-critical non-conformities found that could lead to safety concerns or issues,' Sigachi said without mentioning when the last audit was conducted. It said an internal safety review has been initiated and Sigachi remains committed to cooperating with all legal, safety, and regulatory audits to strengthen safety norms. All learnings will be incorporated to reinforce and redesign the safety framework, it said. Speaking to media at the site, Sigachi MD and CEO Amit Raj Sinha said the plant building is old but the equipment inside are being constantly upgraded. On the cause behind the incident, he said it seems to be dust explosion in dryer section. The company has three such facilities in the country and no solvents were used in them, he added. thanked Chief Minister Reddy and Health, Labour and Industries Ministers, the local MLA, District Collector and officials for their 'unconditional support'. To queries, he said there were 143 employees at the plant during the incident and the company is in the process of collating the number of contract workers. The company is paying hospital bills of those injured and its executives were stationed at all the hospitals to provide assistance to the families of those deceased and injured, he said.

Vaccination against FMD for cattle in Vellore, Ranipet districts begins

A vaccination drive against the Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) for cattle in Vellore and Ranipet districts was launched on Wednesday. Officials of the Department of Animal Husbandry, which executes the drive, said that the vaccine is administered to the cattle twice a year, free of cost. Cattle, including milch cows, buffalo, bulls, goats, sheep, and pigs, will be vaccinated. 'Generally, the vaccination against the disease is done in September and February every year, depending on its availability. In Vellore, the three-week drive up to July 22 will cover around 1.85 lakh cattle,' Dr. G. Anbuvan, Assistant Director (AD), Department of Animal Husbandry (Vellore), told The Hindu. Executed under the Centrally sponsored National Animal Disease Control Programme (NADCP), the vaccine helps to boost the immunity of the animals and thereby prevent loss of income for dairy farmers. The drive was launched by Collectors V.R. Subbulaxmi and J.U. Chandrakala in Vellore and Ranipet districts, respectively. In Ranipet, around 1.90 lakh cattle will be vaccinated till July 31. Among these districts, Tiruvannamalai has the highest number of 7.44 lakh cattle that will be covered under the programme this season, followed by Vellore (1.85 lakh cattle), Ranipet (1.90 lakh cattle) and Tirupattur (1.15 lakh cattle). Veterinarians said that high fever, boils in the mouth and feet, loss of weight, and swelling in the mouth are some of the symptoms of the disease, which spreads through airborne transmission. The infection spreads during cold weather and monsoon especially between November and December every year in these districts.

PET CT scan and Gamma camera to be commissioned at Tiruchi GH soon

A Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Computed Tomography (CT) scan centre with Gamma camera (SPECT) will become functional at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH) in Tiruchi by the end of the year, according to official sources. As per a recent work order issued by Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation, the project is to be executed by Bengaluru-based company Matrix Imaging Solutions India, under the 'Build, Own and Operate' model of private-public partnership, which will not create any new expenditure for the State Government. 'The successful bidder (service provider) will have to pay 10% of their monthly collection to the Hospital Maintenance Fund for the utilisation of space, water and electricity,' according to the work order. Experienced specialists and technicians will be recruited by the service provider. The period of the contract is initially set at five years. 'We have identified a place for the new facility, and since it will emit radiation, stringent precautions will be taken to ensure safety. All the materials used will be approved by the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB). The facility will be designed according to industrial specifications. 'Hot toilets' will also be built inside the premises. We expect the centre to be ready by the end of this year,' a senior MGMGH official told The Hindu. He added that two rooms had been earmarked in the Super-Speciality Block of the hospital to provide easy access to patients from private and public hospitals. According to the initial price list (applicable to all patients), a whole body PET-CT scan will cost ₹11,000. Other scan prices range from ₹9,200 to ₹6,500. Gamma camera studies will cost ₹1,200 to ₹12,900. Patients covered by the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme will be scanned on cashless mode with requisite authentication.
