‘Report paints poor picture of state's higher edu sector'
T'puram: Contrary to the state govt's claims, the higher education sector in Kerala performed poorly in the 2025
NITI Aayog report
. The report presented a dismal picture of the higher education institutions, especially
state universities
, Save University Campaign Committee (SUCC) has said..
The think-tank said that the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) report highlighted that the density of universities and colleges in the state were far behind that of other states in south India. Moreover, only four of the total 14 universities in the state featured in the best 100 list.
SUCC said that the state govt's attempt to reduce the universities into govt departments by taking away their autonomy would further harm the higher education sector in Kerala.
"For the improvement of the higher education sector, the quality of state universities should improve significantly. The NITI Aayog report underlines the fact that the excellence of a few institutions like IIT and IISER is not enough to improve the quality of the sector as a whole," the committee said.
The percentage of students between the age group of 18 to 23 pursuing higher education is 28.4% nationally. While it is 47% in Tamil Nadu and 43% in Himachal Pradesh, it is 41.3% in Kerala and 40% in Telangana.

The figures, unlike what the higher education minister R Bindu claims, were not inspiring, SUCC said.
Moreover, contrary to the claims of the state govt, the best student-teacher ratio in the country is not in Kerala. It is Tamil Nadu, with a ratio of 1:14, compared to 1:15 in Kerala.
SUCC also said the govt should allow the universities to function as autonomous institutions and grow independently. The attempts to usurp the autonomy of state universities would only further weaken the institutions, they added.

He also emphasized the importance of fact-based discussions, constructive criticism over blind opposition, and solutions-driven democracy. He also praised the national education policy for empowering youth to pursue their talents and interests, fostering innovation and entrepreneurship. Saini criticized the then Congress govt for imposing the emergency, stating there was no instability or natural disaster to justify it. "Fifty years ago, during the Emergency, not only were political rights violated, but there was also a brutal attack on women's freedom, dignity, and rights. It was a time when both democracy and women's dignity were strangled. Women were imprisoned, their voices were suppressed, and they were confined to their homes," said the CM. He added that it reminds him of a time when efforts were made to suppress the voice of the entire nation. "It was an era when, disregarding the constitution, the country was turned into a prison to save the power of one family," he said. He also expressed confidence that India's democratic spirit can never be crushed again. "Today, with so many aware mothers and sisters present, I am confident that no one can crush the democratic consciousness of this country again," he said, adding that emergency was imposed on the night of June 25, 1975, by misusing the constitution, which curtailed the rights of every individual in the country.

Canada kicks out Chinese surveillance giant Hikvision over national security threat
The Canadian government has ordered Chinese surveillance technology company Hikvision to shut down its Canadian operations, citing national security concerns. Industry Minister Mélanie Joly announced the decision late Friday(June 27), stating the move follows a formal national security review under the Investment Canada Act. The review involved intelligence and security assessments provided by Canada's national agencies. "The government has determined that Hikvision Canada Inc.'s continued operations in Canada would be injurious to Canada's national security," Joly wrote in a post on X. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy the Dip: Top 5 Dividend Stocks with Growth Potential Seeking Alpha Read Now Undo Hikvision, formally known as Hangzhou Hikvision Digital Technology Co., Ltd., is one of the world's largest manufacturers of surveillance cameras and related equipment. The company has operated in Canada through a subsidiary since 2014. The decision comes amid growing international scrutiny of Hikvision. The US, UK, and Australia have previously placed sanctions or restrictions on the company over allegations that its technology was used in the surveillance of Uyghur Muslims in China's Xinjiang region, allegations Beijing has denied. Major retailers such as Best Buy and Home Depot stopped selling Hikvision products as early as 2021. Live Events While Canadian officials did not disclose the specific threat that triggered this review, the Investment Canada Act allows Ottawa to investigate and block foreign investments that pose potential risks to national security. In a statement issued Saturday, Hikvision said it 'strongly disagrees' with the government's decision. 'We believe it lacks a factual basis, procedural fairness, and transparency,' the company said. 'Instead of evaluating our technology on its cybersecurity merits, the decision appears to be driven by the parent company's country of origin, reflecting broader geopolitical tensions and an unjustified bias against Chinese companies.' Hikvision added that it fully cooperated with Canadian authorities and submitted all requested documentation. Along with the shutdown order, Minister Joly said the federal government will ensure that departments, agencies, and Crown corporations do not purchase or use Hikvision equipment moving forward. She also announced a review of government buildings to identify and phase out any legacy Hikvision devices. 'I strongly urge Canadians to take note of this decision and make their own decisions accordingly,' Joly added. The Chinese Embassy in Ottawa has not yet commented on the decision.
