Roughriders ready for showdown with Stampeders

Yahoo6 days ago
It's a battle for top spot in the West Division as the Saskatchewan Roughriders host the Calgary Stampeders on Friday night.
Following their first bye week of the CFL season, the Roughriders enter the Week 6 contest at 4-0 while the Stampeders are 3-1 after beating the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 37-16 last week.
And while it's a long season, the winner of Friday's game — which is set to get underway at 7 p.m. at Mosaic Stadium — will hold down top spot in the division through six weeks.
While Friday's game features the top two running backs in the CFL this year in A.J. Ouellette and Dedrick Mills — who rank No. 1 and 2 in rushing yards respectively — there's also a couple veteran quarterbacks set to go head-to-head.
Trevor Harris will return to the starting role for the Roughriders after sitting out Saskatchewan's Week 4 game over the B.C. Lions as he was in concussion protocol.
While Jake Maier picked up the win in relief of Harris, the 39-year-old pivot wants to keep Saskatchewan's strong start to the season going, although he says what happened last week or the week prior doesn't matter at this point.
'Always resets at zero,' said Harris. 'Assess where we were last week, find ways to sharpen our axe and cut down the next tree.
'One of my favourite quotes is, 'If you gave me four hours to chop down a tree, I'd spend three hours sharpening my axe.' And so it's about just making sure that we're sharp going into the game.'
On the other side, Vernon Adams Jr. has been at the helm for all four of Calgary's games to start the season and remarkably enough, the 32-year-old veteran threw his first touchdown pass of the season last week against the Bombers.
So far this season, Adams has averaged 256 yards passing and 29 yards rushing per game, making him a dual threat the Roughriders need to be aware of.
'He could beat you in a couple different ways,' said Roughriders head coach Corey Mace. 'Over the history coaching against him, he's had games where he's ruined it with his legs and he's had games where he sat in the pocket and delivered.
'Certainly we're going to stick to kind of our game plan, what we see this week, and not putting too much emphasis on trying to eliminate one guy. We're 12 (players), they're 12, we've just got to make sure we do our part.'
Calgary's defence has been a big reason for their strong start to the season and that was on display last week as Derrick Moncrief and Damon Webb — two former Roughriders — each had an interception returned for a touchdown in Calgary's win.
And while they've been able to score on defence, the group has given up a league-low 81 points this season while holding their opponents out of the end zone for a large portion of their first four games, as noted by Harris this week.
'I don't think anybody scored a touchdown in the first three quarters on this defence,' said Harris, whose offence is averaging a league-high 29.3 points per game. 'They make things very difficult on you.
'They don't do 65 different coverages. They play what they play, and they get really, really good at it, and they make things difficult for you.
'And so to some degree, you know what you're going to get. But we also know that they're going to give us looks that we haven't seen before. They're going to keep us guessing and show us a few things that they haven't shown yet this year.
'We're excited about the challenge. They bring a great challenge to us, but we think we bring great challenge to them as well.'
Cornerback Tevaughn Campbell (groin) has been ruled out this week after suffering an injury in Saskatchewan's Week 4 game against the Lions, meaning Antoine Brooks Jr. will likely draw the start this week.
Meanwhile, running back Thomas Bertrand-Hudon (thigh) has also been ruled out which means Ka'Deem Carey will find himself back on the roster backing up Ouellette.
And along the offensive line, with Trevon Tate (shoulder) out, Zack Fry will slot in at left guard for the Green and White, who will still be without receiver Samuel Emilus (foot) for a second consecutive game.

INDYCAR Power Rankings: Iowa Winners Alex Palou, Pato O'Ward No. 1 & 2

The two winners of the Iowa Speedway doubleheader are ranked first and second in the power rankings. The driver who won for the seventh time this year is still No. 1. The driver who won for the first time this year is now No. 2. INDYCAR drivers compete on a variety of tracks and move from the relatively short Iowa oval to the final street course of the year this weekend as they head to Toronto. Here's a look at these rankings heading into Toronto: Dropped out: Colton Herta (Last Week: 7); Rinus VeeKay (Last Week: 10) On the verge: Colton Herta, Scott McLaughlin, Will Power 10. Santino Ferrucci (Last Week: 9) Ferrucci had an eighth and a 15th at Iowa, which amounts to an OK weekend for the A.J. Foyt Racing driver. The big thing is that he and Conor Daly battled without drama, as Daly edged him by a spot in the first race and Ferrucci returned the favor in the second. 9. David Malukas (Last Week: Not Ranked) Malukas had a 12th and a fourth in the two Iowa races, a strong bounce back after one top 10 in three of the four races heading into Iowa. This teammate of Ferrucci looked especially strong in the second race at Iowa. 8. Josef Newgarden (Last Week: Not Ranked) Newgarden arguably should have won both Iowa races but settled for a second and then a 10th. The Team Penske driver appeared to have a dominant car but pit road proved to be costly. First, he got beat on the final pit stop and then there the cautions that came out at inopportune times during the green-flag cycles. 7. Christian Lundgaard (Last Week: 5) After a 21st-place finish in the first race, Lundgaard placed sixth in Race 2 to salvage the weekend. The Arrow McLaren driver is likely happy to be headed to Toronto. 6. Kyle Kirkwood (Last Week: 3) After back-to-back wins, Kirkwood had finishes of fourth and eighth heading into Iowa, where he had an awful weekend as he crashed in practice, then again in the first race where he finished 26th. He finished the second race, but the Andretti driver certainly wasn't happy with an 18th. 5. Felix Rosenqvist (Last Week: 6) Rosenqvist rebounded from a 17th-place finish in the first race to finish seventh in the second. The Meyer Shank Racing driver certainly had hoped for more as he qualified in the top three for both races. 4. Marcus Armstrong (Last Week: 8) A ninth and a third at Iowa should make Armstrong feel good, considering his limited experience on ovals. The Meyer Shank Racing driver has finished ninth or better in each of the last six races. 3. Scott Dixon (Last Week: 2) Dixon finished 10th in the first race and then second in the second race at Iowa. That wasn't a bad weekend following the Chip Ganassi Racing driver's first victory of the season at Mid-Ohio. 2. Pato O'Ward (Last Week: 4) The first victory of the season for O'Ward was great for him, and he followed that up with a fifth-place finish in the second race. The Arrow McLaren driver is second in the standings but not close at all to Palou (129 points). 1. Alex Palou (Last Week: 1) Palou had a solid Iowa, with a fifth-place finish in the first race and then a victory (his seventh of the year) in the second race. The Chip Ganassi Racing driver would need an unprecedented collapse to lose the title. Bob Pockrass covers NASCAR and INDYCAR for FOX Sports. Streaming Maple Leafs Games Just Got More Expensive: Breaking Down The Sportsnet+ Price Hike And Why Fans Are Upset About It

Streaming Maple Leafs Games Just Got More Expensive: Breaking Down The Sportsnet+ Price Hike And Why Fans Are Upset About It Subscribers of Sportsnet+ received an email last week that appears to have been unwelcome to users of the platform. Depending on your subscribed package, you saw a price increase that varied based on whether you subscribed to the base, premium, or annual version of either product. Looking at it from the perspective of fans who want to watch the Toronto Maple Leafs this season, the increase was pretty substantial. Canadian Pricing Breakdown If you live in the Leafs' viewing area and only need the base Sportsnet+ subscription, the monthly price is jumping from $24.99 CDN per month to $29.99 CDN per month—a 20 percent increase. The annual version of this service is going up from $199.99 CDN to $249.99 CDN, an increase of 25 percent. Factor in that TSN still broadcasts a portion of the Maple Leafs games, which requires an additional TSN subscription costing $24.99 CDN per month or $199 CDN annually. There's also Prime Video. Amazon, in the second year of its two-year sublicensing agreement with Sportsnet, carried six Leafs games exclusively in Canada and is expected to replicate that this season. That will cost an additional $9.99 CDN per month or $99 CDN for the annual version. Advertisement From a monthly perspective, watching every Leafs game in their viewing region will set you back $64.97 CDN per month. Maple Leafs fans in Canada outside of the Leafs viewing area, however, may get a bit of a break. Although the monthly subscription to Sportsnet+ Premium is skyrocketing from $34.99 to $42.99, a TSN subscription is not required. This means it will only cost $52.98 per month (including the Prime subscription). American and International Options Americans will have it a bit easier, as a full subscription to ESPN's new direct-to-consumer platform will be available for $29.99 US per month and will include Disney+ and Hulu. That package will give you access to every Leafs game except for those carried by TNT, which will be available on HBO Max with live sports for $16.99 US per month. After conversion fees, it's only pennies cheaper than the Leafs region. But if you want to get most of the games, you can get away with just the ESPN+ offering at $11.99 US per month. Advertisement Around the world, games are available via for $14.99 US per month, a product that is vastly superior to what is available in North America (more on that later). Why Are the Prices Going Up? Sportsnet will not give a reason. Every response they have given to inquiries merely touts the quality of their service, which has no doubt further angered subscribers. Rogers' recently extended their partnership with the NHL for an additional 12 years for $11 billion, more than doubling the value of the previous 12-year deal which expires at the end of the upcoming season. I think fans expected some form of increase, but perhaps not one so drastic or positioned in a way that offers loyal customers little choice. Everyone's price is increasing, and you have until Sept. 9 to decide. Advertisement Why Are Fans Upset? It's not just that the price is going up, although that is a driving factor. As many users have pointed out, the actual quality of the product and streaming quality has not improved in a meaningful way over the last few years. Before the 2022-23 season, NHL Live used to be its own standalone product under Subscribers of the premium tier of what used to be called Sportsnet NOW had access to where viewers had high-fidelity streams shown at 60 frames per second and could pick either home or road streaming broadcaster. Since the switchover, Sportsnet has limited viewers to just one broadcast feed. Under all subscribers could watch every game in its archive dating back to 2014. That disappeared in the migration of NHL Live to Sportsnet+. What was worse was the inability to watch missed games if they weren't on Sportsnet. Leafs viewers have had this issue over the last three seasons now. If a Leafs game was on TSN, for example, and viewers were unable to watch it live, TSN was not permitted to archive a replay for its subscribers, and Sportsnet would not have the game in its archive either. Unless you subscribed to cable and managed to DVR it, the game essentially disappeared; if you missed it, you simply missed it. You can watch the Advertisement YouTube recaps on Sportsnet or NHL's YouTube channels and that's about it. Based on collected feedback, the anger regarding the increase has built up over years of Sportsnet asking more for less, or showing little improvement in its offering. What You Can Do About It If you live in the Leafs region and bundle your cable, you may be able to get some discounts that way. I subscribe to Beanfield, an independent cable supplier that has contracts with some condominiums and office buildings I'm able to get both TSN and Sportsnet's offerings that carry all Maple Leafs games for $45 per month plus HST. Those give you access to the apps and re-negotiating your cable bill is often more successful than trying to negotiation or talk to anyone on an app platform. Advertisement TSN routinely has sales, and Prime offers free trials. Sportsnet, however, has not offered any discounts at any time on record since the 2023-24 season. Contact Sportsnet/Rogers: Voice your concerns directly to Sportsnet customer service or through their social media channels. The more unified the feedback, the more likely it is to be heard.
