Kurdistan issues 'final warning' to Baghdad over salary crisis
On Saturday, the Barzani Headquarters gave Iraq's federal government what it described as a 'final opportunity' to resolve long-standing disputes with the Kurdistan Region, particularly the delayed disbursement of public salaries.
In a statement, the headquarters said the Kurdistan Democratic Party's (KDP) political bureau held a meeting to determine its stance amid the ongoing deadlock over budget allocations, salary payments, and other financial entitlements owed to the Region.
According to the statement, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein returned to the Region today after holding talks with several key Iraqi political figures. He reportedly informed the KDP leadership that federal officials and political forces had pledged to resolve the dispute and release Kurdistan's financial entitlements 'within the coming days.'
'In light of these assurances, and in the interest of preserving calm dialogue and the broader national interest, we have decided to grant the Iraqi federal government in Baghdad a final chance to resolve this crisis,' the statement read.
The party emphasized its belief in dialogue as the best path forward, reiterating that 'mutual understanding is key to settling all outstanding issues between Erbil and Baghdad.'

EU appoints New Head of Mission in Iraq
By John Lee. The Council of the European Union has appointed Ralf Schröder (pictured) as the new head of mission for the European Union Advisory Mission in Iraq (EUAM Iraq). He will take up his duties on 16th August 2025. According to a statement: Ralf Schröder is a high-ranked German police officer with 30 years of experience in the security sector, specialised in counterterrorism. He has also served in different international positions -e.g. in Afghanistan and Iraq, where he was head of the Embassy Security Team - and in international missions: UNMIS and UNSOM. Since November 2024, Ralf Schroeder serves in EUAM Iraq as Deputy Head of Mission. The decision was taken by the Political and Security Committee on 8 July 2025. EUAM Iraq was launched in October 2017 in response to a request by the Iraqi government for advice on how to undertake civilian security sector reform. The civilian mission, headquartered in Baghdad and with an office in Erbil, had an initial mandate of one year which was regularly extended, following the assessment of Iraqi needs. The mission's overarching task is to assist in the development and coherent implementation of the Iraqi National Security Strategy, associated national strategies and other national security priorities. This process, supported by several international partners, involves inter alia support to institutional reform, anti-organised crime, anti-corruption, protection of cultural heritage, Integrated Border Management and counter-terrorism. EUAM Iraq is mandated to advise officials of the Office of the National Security Adviser, the Ministry of Interior and other relevant authorities in charge of civilian related aspects of security sector reform. The mission can conduct visits at regional and provincial levels in support of Iraqi efforts to strengthen countrywide coordination as it relates to civilian security sector reform. Iraq to Build Eco-Friendly Cement Plants in Nineveh

Iraq's Minister of Industry and Minerals, Professor Khaled Battal Al-Najm, has instructed the development of modern, environmentally friendly cement plants in the Badoush and Hammam Al-Alil complexes in Nineveh province. These new facilities will replace outdated plants built in the 1950s that still use the wet process. During his visit to the Northern Cement Directorate of the State Company for Iraqi Cement, the Minister chaired a meeting with the company's Director General and senior staff to assess production capacity, marketing performance, and current operational challenges. He stressed the importance of the new plants in supporting reconstruction projects in Mosul, where a shortage of key materials continues to hamper infrastructure development. Al-Najm reaffirmed the Ministry's support for productive facilities operating under successful partnership contracts. He also directed the termination of contracts for underperforming plants, with plans to re-offer them for investment to maximise economic viability. The Minister concluded by reiterating the Ministry's commitment to advancing its industrial development programmes across all governorates.
