PPB risk premium higher amid legal case in Indonesia

The Star19-06-2025
PETALING JAYA: Investors will likely demand a higher risk premium for PPB Group Bhd after its associate company, Wilmar International Ltd, revealed that its subsidiaries were charged by the Attorney General's Office (AGO) of Indonesia.
Wilmar, which denied any wrongdoing over the alleged corruption conspiracy, had placed a security deposit of US$729mil with the AGO pending a Supreme Court decision.
Kenanga Research, in a report, said: 'We believe this development is likely to raise the risk premium for PPB group, and could pose an overhang so long as it is not resolved, given that Indonesia accounts for about 10% of its business.'
Wilmar is PPB's main asset and profit contributor, the research house noted.
While the research house is maintaining PPB's financial year 2025 (FY25) and FY26 earnings, it said: 'We are downgrading our target price for PPB to RM10.50 from RM15.'
Kenanga Research has also cut the stock to a 'market perform' call from an 'outperform' previously, as the matter would be submitted to the Supreme Court.
The risks to its recommendation include weather impact on commodity supply and prices, regulatory changes affecting prices of essential goods and production cost inflation.
In June 2023, Indonesia's AGO named three palm oil companies involved in corruption for conspiring with top Indonesian trade office to skirt palm oil export restrictions in 2022.
Wilmar was one of the three companies and, at the time, it indicated that no official charges had been made against any companies in the group and it was seeking more details over the press reports.
In March, all three parties were acquitted by the Central Jakarta Court but a month later, four judges and two lawyers were arrested by the Indonesian AGO.
An employee of Wilmar was also reported to have been arrested.

Preservative-Free Eye Drops Market Size to reach US$1.67 billion in 2031

NEW YORK, July 18, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — According to a new comprehensive report from The Insight Partners, the global preservative-free eye drops market is growing significantly with the increasing prevalence of ocular diseases. The global preservative-free eye drops market is expected to reach US$1.67 billion in 2031 from US$1.21 billion in 2024. The market is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 4.3% from 2025 to 2031. The increasing prevalence of ocular diseases, the aging global population, surging awareness for chemical-free products, and supportive regulations and recommendations fuel market growth. However, limited availability of such products in the market and shorter shelf life hinder market growth. To explore the valuable insights in the Preservative Free Eye Drops Market report, you can easily download a sample PDF of the report – The preservative-free eye drops market is segmented on the basis of type, application, and distribution channel. The report runs an in-depth analysis of market trends, key players, and future opportunities. Overview of Report Findings Increasing Prevalence of Ocular Diseases: Age-related complications such as cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration are among the top causes of vision loss globally. As per the report 'Age-Related Macular Degeneration: Epidemiology, Pathophysiology, Diagnosis, and Treatment' published in 2022, age-related macular degeneration impacts over 200 million people worldwide and is expected to reach 300 million by 2040. As per the WHO 2023, in Europe, approximately 90 million people have some form of vision impairment or blindness, representing ~9% of the population. The prevalence of these complications highlights the need for efficient eye care treatment. Preservative-free eye drops provide a safer option for people suffering from chronic eye diseases, reducing the risk of preservative-related irritation and toxicity. Rising Aging Population: With age, individuals become more prone to dry eye syndrome, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, and cataracts. These disorders need to be treated long-term or even for a lifetime through ophthalmic solutions. But conventional preservative-containing eye drops such as those containing benzalkonium chloride (BAK), are known to induce or worsen irritation, inflammation, and injury to the ocular surface, particularly with prolonged use. Elderly patients are susceptible to such side effects because of thinner tear films and lower regenerative capacity of the ocular surface. Preservative-free eye drops, which provide a milder and safer option, are increasingly being favored among this population. The tendency is particularly prominent in industrialized nations with an accelerating aging population, including Japan, Germany, and the US. It is also gaining prominence in China and India. Clinicians today are inclined to prescribe preservative-free drugs for older patients with chronic diseases. With the world population aged 60 and above expected to double by the year 2050, demand for safer, better-tolerated ophthalmic products will surge, driving market growth. AI-powered 'nudify' apps fuel deadly wave of digital blackmail

AFTER a Kentucky teenager died by suicide this year, his parents discovered he had received threatening texts demanding US$3,000 to suppress an artificial intelligence (AI)-generated nude image of him. The tragedy underscores how so-called sextortion scams targeting children are growing around the world, particularly with the rapid proliferation of "nudify" apps — AI tools that digitally strip off clothing or generate sexualised imagery. Elijah Heacock, 16, was just one of thousands of American minors targeted by such digital blackmail, which has spurred calls for more action from tech platforms and regulators. His parents told US media that the text messages ordered him to pay up or an apparently AI-generated nude photo would be sent to his family and friends. "The people that are after our children are well organised," said John Burnett, the boy's father, in a CBS News interview. "They are well financed, and they are relentless. They don't need the photos to be real, they can generate whatever they want, and then they use it to blackmail the child." United States investigators were looking into the case, which comes as nudify apps — which rose to prominence targeting celebrities — are being increasingly weaponised against children. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has reported a "horrific increase" in sextortion cases targeting US minors, with victims typically males between the ages of 14 and 17. The threat has led to an "alarming number of suicides", the agency warned. In a recent survey, Thorn, a non-profit focused on preventing online child exploitation, found that six per cent of American teens had been a direct victim of deepfake nudes. "Reports of fakes and deepfakes — many of which are generated using these 'nudifying' services — seem to be closely linked with reports of financial sextortion, or blackmail with sexually explicit images," said the British watchdog Internet Watch Foundation in a report last year. "Perpetrators no longer need to source intimate images from children because images that are convincing enough to be harmful — maybe even as harmful as real images in some cases — can be produced using generative AI." The IWF identified one "pedophile guide" developed by predators that explicitly encouraged perpetrators to use nudifying tools to generate material to blackmail children. The author of the guide claimed to have successfully blackmailed some 13-year-old girls. The tools are a lucrative business. A new analysis of 85 websites selling nudify services found they may be collectively worth up to US$36 million a year. The analysis from Indicator, a US publication investigating digital deception, estimates that 18 of the sites made between US$2.6 million and US$18.4 million over the six months to May. Most of the sites relied on tech infrastructure from Google, Amazon and Cloudflare to operate, and remained profitable despite crackdowns by platforms and regulators, said Indicator. The proliferation of AI tools has led to new forms of abuse impacting children, including pornography scandals at universities and schools worldwide, where teenagers created sexualised images of their classmates. A recent Save the Children survey found that one in five young people in Spain have been victims of deepfake nudes, with those images shared online without their consent. Earlier this year, Spanish prosecutors said they were investigating three minors in the town of Puertollano for allegedly targeting their classmates and teachers with AI-generated pornographic content and distributing it in their school. In the United Kingdom, the government this year made creating sexually explicit deepfakes a criminal offence, with perpetrators facing up to two years in jail. And in May, US President Donald Trump signed the bipartisan "Take It Down Act", which criminalises the non-consensual publication of intimate images, while also mandating their removal from online platforms. Meta also recently announced it was filing a suit against a Hong Kong company behind a nudify app called Crush AI, which it said repeatedly circumvented the tech giant's rules to post ads on its platforms. But despite such measures, researchers say AI nudifying sites remain resilient. "To date, the fight against AI nudifiers has been a game of whack-a-mole," said Indicator, calling the apps and sites "persistent and malicious adversaries".

Wall Street futures edge up as optimism over economy offsets Netflix's fall

The S&P 500 and the Dow are on track for only modest advances this week, as investors navigate a swirl of mixed signals. (AP pic) NEW YORK : US stock index futures inched higher today, buoyed by signs of a resilient US economy, even as Netflix's market-beating quarterly profit failed to dazzle investors. At 5.30am, S&P 500 E-minis were up 8.75 points, or 0.14%, Nasdaq 100 E-minis were up 33 points, or 0.14%, and Dow E-minis were up 66 points, or 0.15%. Wall Street's winning streak continued overnight, with the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq notching fresh record closes after upbeat data on retail sales and jobless claims signaled a healthy US economy. The data gives the Federal Reserve (Fed) some breathing room to assess the inflationary effects of US tariffs. Netflix rode the success of 'Squid Game' to top earnings estimates and boost its revenue outlook for the year. Yet, the streaming giant's shares slipped 1.5% in premarket trading. It has risen 43% this year. All eyes remain on whether President Donald Trump's tariff measures are starting to ripple through the economy. The Fed has signaled it will stay the course on interest rates until it sees clearer signs of how higher import taxes are shaping inflation. Traders now put the odds of a rate cut in September at about 56.3%, with a July move nearly off the table, according to CME's FedWatch tool. 'This week's data supports the wait-and-see camp on the Fed. 'Tariffs are percolating to consumer prices but is not withholding households from opening their wallets,' said Kenneth Broux, head of corporate research and rates, at Societe Generale. Fed governor Christopher Waller signaled yesterday that mounting economic risks and tame inflation have him backing an interest rate cut by this month's end, downplaying concerns that tariffs will fuel lasting price hikes. As the second-quarter earnings season gets underway, early results from 36 S&P 500 companies that reported, more than 80% have topped Wall Street's earnings expectations, according to LSEG I/B/E/S data. The S&P 500 and the Dow are on track for only modest advances this week, as investors navigate a swirl of mixed signals – robust retail sales, a spike in consumer inflation, and a stall in producer prices for June. Cryptocurrency stocks rose after the US House of Representatives passed a bill that would develop a regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies. Robinhood Markets and Coinbase Global gained 1.9% each, while Bitfarms rose 2.8% and Hut 8 advanced 1.3%.
