Five killed in courthouse attack in southeast Iran

West Australian5 days ago
At least five people have been killed and 13 others injured in an armed attack by the Sunni Jaish al-Adl Baluch group on a courthouse in Iran's restive southeast Sistan-Baluchestan province.
Three assailants were also killed in the ensuing clashes with security forces, a senior police official told the state news agency IRNA.
He said a mother and child were among those killed by the gunmen who threw a hand grenade into the building in Zahedan, the capital of Sistan-Baluchestan.
In a statement posted on its Telegram account, Baloch Sunni jihadist militant organisation Jaish al-Adl took responsibility for the attack and urged "all civilians to immediately evacuate the area of clashes for their safety".
The Baluch human rights group HAALVSH, quoting eyewitnesses, said several judiciary staff members and security personnel were killed or wounded when the assailants stormed the judges' chambers.
Sistan-Baluchestan province, near the borders with Pakistan and Afghanistan, is home to Iran's Sunni Muslim Baluch minority, who have long complained of economic marginalisation and political exclusion.
Clashes in the province between security forces and armed groups, including Sunni militants and separatists who say they are fighting for greater rights and autonomy, are frequent.
The Iranian government accuses some of them of ties to foreign powers and involvement in cross-border smuggling and insurgency.

Trump wants deal to end Ukraine war in a week

US President Donald Trump has made clear that he wants a deal to end Russia's war in Ukraine in the next week, the United States told the United Nations Security Council. "Both Russia and Ukraine must negotiate a ceasefire and durable peace. It is time to make a deal. President Trump has made clear this must be done by August 8. The United States is prepared to implement additional measures to secure peace," senior US diplomat John Kelley told the 15-member council. Trump said on Tuesday that the United States would start imposing tariffs and other measures on Russia "10 days from today" if Moscow showed no progress toward ending its war in Ukraine. Kyiv and Moscow have held three rounds of talks in Istanbul this year that yielded exchanges of prisoners and bodies, but no breakthrough to defuse the more than three-year conflict. "We intend to continue the negotiations in Istanbul," Russia's deputy UN Ambassador Dmitry Polyanskiy told the council, but he added: "Despite the meetings in Istanbul, in the West, the war party did not go away ... We continue hearing voices of those who think that diplomacy is just a way of criticising Russia and exerting pressure on it." Ukraine's deputy UN Ambassador Khrystyna Hayovyshyn said Russia must be confronted with "unity, resolve and action." "We seek a comprehensive, just and lasting peace grounded in the principles of the UN Charter and nothing less. We repeat - a full, immediate and unconditional ceasefire is essential. It is the first step to halting Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine," she told the council. Meanwhile, Russia launched waves of missiles and drones on Kyiv before dawn on Thursday, killing at least 14 people including a six-year-old boy, and wounding well over 100 others, officials in the Ukrainian capital said. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, speaking in his nightly video address, put the death toll of the war at 14 and said rescue operations were continuing into the evening. The Interior Ministry said more than 1200 police and rescuers were tackling the aftermath. Ukraine's national rescue service said 15 had been killed and 145 injured. Zelenskiy said dozens remained in hospital. Fourteen of the injured were children, the largest number of children hurt in a single attack on the city since Russia started its full-scale invasion almost three-and-a-half years ago. In an earlier post on Telegram, the president said Russia had launched more than 300 drones and eight missiles. "Today the world has once again seen Russia's response to our desire for peace ... Therefore, peace without strength is impossible," Zelenskiy said on the Telegram app. City authorities announced a day of mourning to be held on Friday. Russia's Defence Ministry said it targeted and hit Ukrainian military airfields and ammunition depots as well as businesses linked to what it called Kyiv's military-industrial complex. Explosions rocked Kyiv from about midnight onwards and blazes lit up the night sky. Yurii Kravchuk, 62, stood wrapped in a blanket next to a damaged building with a bandage around his head. He had heard the missile alert but did not get to a shelter in time, he told Reuters. "I started waking up my wife and then there was an explosion. My daughter ended up in the hospital," he said. Russia, which denies targeting civilians, has stepped up air strikes in recent months on Ukrainian towns and cities far from the front lines of the war. Thousands of civilians, the vast majority of them Ukrainian, have been killed since Moscow invaded in 2022. Six dead and dozens hurt in Russian air attack on Kyiv

Russia has attacked Ukraine's capital with missiles and drones, killing at least six people including a six-year-old boy and wounding 52 others, Ukrainian authorities say. The casualties numbers were likely to rise, Kyiv City Military Administration head Tymur Tkachenko said on Thursday. A large part of a nine-storey residential building collapsed after it was struck, he said. Rescue teams were at the scene to search for people trapped under the rubble. Russia fired 309 Shahed and decoy drones, and eight Iskander-K cruise missiles overnight, the Ukrainian air force said. Ukrainian air defences intercepted and jammed 288 strike drones and three missiles, with five missiles and 21 drones striking targets. Russia's defence ministry, meanwhile, said its forces took full control of the strategically important city of Chasiv Yar in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region. Ukrainian officials, who typically do not confirm retreats, did not immediately comment. Russian and Ukrainian troops have battled for control of Chasiv Yar for nearly 18 months. It includes a hilltop from which troops can attack other key points in the region that form the backbone of Ukraine's eastern defences. A report on Thursday from Ukraine's Army General Staff said there were seven clashes in Chasiv Yar in the past 24 hours. An attached map showed most of the town as being under Russian control. DeepState, an open-source Ukrainian map widely used by the military and analysts, showed early on Thursday that neighbourhoods to the south and west of Chasiv Yar remained as so-called grey zones, or uncontrolled by either side. The attack targeted the Kyiv, Dnipro, Poltava, Sumy, Mykolaiv regions, with Ukraine's capital being the primary target, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy wrote on Telegram. "Today, the world once again saw Russia's answer to our desire for peace with America and Europe," Zelenskiy said. "New demonstrative killings. That is why peace without strength is impossible." He called on Ukraine's allies to follow through on defence commitments and pressure Moscow towards real negotiations. Plumes of smoke emanating from a partially damaged building and debris strewn on the ground. At least 27 locations across Kyiv were hit by the attack, Tkachenko said, with the heaviest damage seen in the Solomianskyi and Sviatoshynskyi districts. US President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he's giving Russian President Vladimir Putin a shorter deadline - August 8 - for peace efforts to make progress, or Washington will impose punitive sanctions and tariffs. Western leaders have accused Putin of dragging his feet in US-led peace efforts in an attempt to capture more Ukrainian land.
