A second-half fightback allowed the Junior Springboks to beat Argentina 36–25 at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha, taking the lead after the first day of the Rugby Championship U20.
The Junior Springboks made plenty of mistakes in the first half and showed little defensive structure to find themselves 25–15 down shortly after the break.
They never improved in their lineouts – losing plenty of their put-ins to Argentina – but they gained momentum to control possession and territory, breaking the Argentina line repeatedly to score three of their five tries in the final 35 minutes.
Credit must go to Argentina, who showed real flair and capitalised on any mistake offered by the home side in the first half. They scored three tries and slotted four kicks away from home.
However, they were merely spectators once the Junior Springboks found their feet.
Junior Springboks bounce back
Before the end of the first quarter, converted tries and penalty kicks from either side cancelled each other out, so that the score was 10–10.
After that, SA centre Demitre Erasmus put the home side ahead through an overlap try. However, Argentina's Bautista Lescano made up for his disallowed try (knock-on) just minutes later with a great line break and converted try, so that Argentina led 20–15 at half-time.
The visitors extended their lead right after the break with captain Felipa Ledesma crashing over on the sideline.
However, the Junior Springboks scored three unanswered tries in the next 20 minutes.
Haashim Pead scored his second try after an excellent line break and offload from winger Cheswill Jooste, while SA captain Riley Norton and Gino Cupido also scored to take the score to 36–25 with 16 minutes left.
Argentina regained momentum right before the end, winning two penalties 10m from the South African try line. However, every attack was blunted by the solid South African defence.
The result came after Australia managed a 29-all draw against New Zealand earlier in the day, thanks to an 83rd-minute (extra time) try, in the opening game of the tournament.
Scorers
South Africa: Tries – Haashim Pead (2), Demitre Erasmus, Riley Norton, Gino Cupido. Conversions – Kyle Smith 3/4. Penalties – Smith 1/1.
Argentina: Tries – Pascal Senillosa, Bautista Lescano, Felipa Ledesma. Conversions – Rafael Benedit 2/3. Penalties – Benedit 2/2.

Chris Smith, Aimee Canny advance to world championship semifinals
Chris Smith and Aimee Canny advanced to the semifinals at the world championships in Singapore on Tuesday to ensure countryman Pieter Coetzé has company in the evening. Teenager Smith, a finalist at the world short-course championships in Budapest last year, powered into the final 16 of the 50m breaststroke as he won the final heat of the morning in a 26.82sec personal best. He was sixth fastest overall and will compete in lane three in the first of the two evening semifinals (1.36pm SA time). His time lifted him to joint second on South Africa's all-time list, level with Michael Houlie, who missed the gala after undergoing an emergency appendectomy. Former world record-holder Cameron van der Burgh tops the list on 26.54. Italy's junior world record-holder in this event, Simone Cerasuolo set the pace in the heats with 26.42, ahead of Japan's Taku Taniguchi (26.65) and 2024 European 100m breaststroke champion Melvin Imoudi of Germany (26.74). With the 50m races of the breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly being added to the Olympic programme, these three events are enjoying a lot more focus. Olympian Canny finished third in her 200m freestyle heat in 1min 57.53sec to rank eighth overall going into the evening semifinals (2.12pm SA time). Coetzé is in action in the 100m backstroke final at 1.59pm. So far five South Africans have advanced to the semifinals with Erin Gallagher and Rebecca Meder also making the top 16, although so far Coetzé is the only to have made a final.

SA rower Kerry Grundlingh killed in Johannesburg cycling accident
The South African and international sporting communities are mourning the tragic death of Kerry Grundlingh, a talented young rower and economics student at Princeton University, who died in a cycling accident while visiting Johannesburg during her summer break. Grundlingh, 21, was struck by a car while cycling in her hometown. The incident was confirmed by both Princeton Athletics and her alma mater, St Mary's School, Waverley, where she matriculated in 2022. 'Kerry lost her life in a cycling accident while visiting family and friends in Johannesburg during the American university summer holidays,' the school said in a statement. Grundlingh had distinguished herself both academically and athletically. As a member of Princeton's open water rowing team, she was a two-time Ivy League medallist and competed at the NCAA Championships in both her freshman and sophomore years. In 2024, she was part of the second varsity eight that took bronze at the Ivy League Championships and later finished sixth at the NCAAs. This year, she rowed in the first varsity eight, winning gold at Ivies and securing victory in the Petite Final at NCAAs. 'She leaves a legacy of her life lived as a tremendous daughter, sister, friend and teammate,' said Princeton head coach Lori Dauphiny. 'Kerry constantly gave the best of herself for the betterment of others in every daily interaction. All of us in the Princeton rowing community send our deepest and heartfelt sympathies to her parents, Debbie and Francois, her brother James, and all her family and friends around the globe.' Grundlingh also represented South Africa at the World Rowing Championships, earning widespread respect for her discipline, dedication, and quiet leadership. In a heartfelt tribute on Facebook, Rowing South Africa said she had left 'an unfillable space in those who had the honour of knowing her,' highlighting her dry sense of humour, infectious laugh, and deep commitment to high performance. Friends, coaches, and team-mates have remembered Grundlingh as a quiet force, a gifted athlete, and a warm, humble presence both on and off the water. 'The world has lost an amazing young woman,' Princeton's Dauphiny said.
