Chatra: The National Thermal Power Corporation's (NTPC) 21-km long conveyor belt between Barkagaon and Banadag coal sidings, which will transport 96,000 metric tonnes of coal daily once fully operational next year, has come as a cause for discontent among the local population.
The conveyor belt, which was formally launched last month, is transporting 28,000 metric tonnes of coal daily while 3 million metric tons are being transported via road. The locals, whose livelihoods depend on transporting coal through trucks, are staring at a bleak future once the belt becomes fully operational. Ever since the belt's launch, the ferries made by the trucks have been seen a dip.
Locals said more than 5,000 people in Kusumbha panchayat under Katkamdag block are dependent on coal transportation from the NTPC's mines for their livings.
Most of them purchased trucks by securing loans from banks and worried about repayments.
"The belt is creating noise pollution by operating round the clock. Many of us purchased Hyva for employment from the compensation received from the land acquired by NTPC," Basant Yadav, the president of Hyva Owners' Association, said. Over the last two days, locals and transporters have staged protests demanding that the NTPC keeps up in coal supply in trucks.
Maintaining that the conveyor belt had made coal transport much more efficient and cost effective, NTPC officials said 3 million tonnes of coal will be transported through it from April 1 next year. Dileep Thakur, public relations officer of NTPC, said the belt system loads 59 wagons within 60 minutes and maintains environmental sensitivity through elevated design. "The elevated conveyor system preserves local flora and fauna, allowing wildlife movement while maintaining operational efficiency," he said.
Hazaribag MP Manish Jaiswal said he recently discussed the issue with Union environment minister Bhupendra Yadav. "Highlighting NTPC's decision to eliminate road transport by 2026-27 FY, I advocated for maintaining 50% of the total coal transport through road so that there is no livelihood crisis in the area," he said.

NTPC, Tangedco to acquire 200 ha for Upper Bhavani hydroelectric project in Nilgiris

NILGIRIS: The National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) and Tangedco are likely to acquire 200 hectares of land, mostly owned by the forest department, for the Upper Bhavani Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Project. Sources said, NTPC, in a joint venture with Tangedco, will be carrying out the infrastructure works in a Public Private Partnership (PPP) at an estimated cost of Rs 6,000 crore. The project is estimated to produce 100 megawatts of power, and the land required for the project is mostly owned by the forest department and revenue department, along with patta land near Upper Bhavani and Avalanche. Both areas are rich in biodiversity, with heavy wildlife movement as human activities and vehicle operations are minimal in these areas. It may be recalled that Sillahalla Pumped Storage Hydro Electric Project was put on hold in the first week of April by the state government after farmers and the public opposed the project citing environmental impact and harm to the region's flora and fauna. The project was initiated and a G.O. was issue during the AIADMK regime in 2014. "We will finalise the land to be acquired for the Upper Bhavani Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Project. We have 18 months to complete the Detailed Project Report (DPR). Once the DPR is ready, the execution will commence, and it will take six years for the completion of the project. The project would pump 1,000 megawatts of power to the state's grid to tide over the increasing power demand," said a senior Tangedco official.

Indian indices end higher on Wednesday on strong corporate earnings

CHENNAI: Indian equity markets ended higher on Tuesday, July 30, supported by strong quarterly earnings from companies such as L&T, NTPC, and Asian Paints. However, overall gains remained limited as investors adopted a cautious stance ahead of the U.S. Federal Reserve's monetary policy decision and ongoing ambiguity over a potential India-U.S. trade deal. The BSE Sensex closed at 81,481.86, up 143.9 points or 0.18 percent, while the NSE Nifty50 settled at 24,855.05, gaining 33.95 points or 0.14 percent. Among the top performers, L&T led the rally after posting a 30 percent year-on-year rise in net profit to ₹3,617 crore for Q1FY26, alongside new order inflows of over ₹94,000 crore. NTPC also gained, reporting an 11 percent increase in profit to ₹6,108 crore despite lower revenue, while Asian Paints managed to cushion a 6 percent year-on-year drop in profit with a 59 percent sequential recovery. On the Sensex, the leading gainers were L&T, Sun Pharma, NTPC, Maruti Suzuki, Bharti Airtel, and Trent. In contrast, Tata Motors fell over 3 percent amid concerns about its global business exposure, while Bajaj Finserv, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Power Grid, and HUL also ended in the red. Sectorally, IT, FMCG, and pharma stocks witnessed modest gains, while realty and auto stocks declined, with the Nifty Realty index falling 0.96 percent and Nifty Auto down 0.6 percent. In the broader market, the Nifty MidCap 100 index slipped 0.07 percent, and the Nifty SmallCap 100 index dropped 0.52 percent, indicating some pressure beyond frontline stocks. India VIX, which tracks market volatility expectations, closed 2.77 percent lower at 11.21, reflecting easing investor anxiety. Globally, markets were subdued as traders awaited cues from the U.S. Federal Reserve's policy announcement. While no rate change is expected, commentary on inflation and growth outlook may influence investor sentiment. Uncertainty over the trajectory of the India-U.S. trade agreement also weighed on market confidence. Looking ahead, analysts suggest that Nifty is likely to find near-term support around 24,750. As long as this level holds, the index may make another attempt to test the 25,000 mark. However, without strong global triggers, market momentum could remain range-bound in the near term.

Stock markets advance for second day on buying in L&T; Sensex gains 144 points

Benchmark stock indices Sensex and Nifty ended higher on Wednesday (July 30, 2025), driven by heavy buying in infrastructure major Larsen & Toubro. Rising for the second day, the 30-share BSE Sensex climbed 143.91 points or 0.18%, to settle at 81,481.86. During the day, the barometer moved in a tight range and rose by 281.01 points or 0.34%, to hit a high of 81,618.96. The 50-share NSE Nifty went up by 33.95 points or 0.14%, to 24,855.05. U.S. trade deal uncertainty and foreign fund outflows restricted the market rally to a large extent, analysts said. Among Sensex firms, Larsen & Toubro jumped 4.87% after the infrastructure major reported a 29.8% rise in consolidated net profit at ₹3,617.19 crore during the June quarter, driven by strong overseas order growth. Sun Pharma, NTPC, Maruti, Bharti Airtel, Trent and Axis Bank were also among the gainers. However, Tata Motors, Power Grid, Eternal, Bajaj Finserv and Hindustan Unilever were among the laggards. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth ₹4,636.60 crore on Tuesday (July 29, 2025), according to exchange data. U.S. President Donald Trump has said the trade deal with India is not finalised, as he stressed that India imposes more tariffs than almost any other country. Mr. Trump spoke to reporters on Tuesday (July 29, 2025) on Air Force One on his way back to Washington from Scotland and was asked about the trade deal with India. 'No, it's not,' Mr. Trump said when asked if the deal with India is finalised. He was also asked about reports that India is preparing to face higher US tariffs between 20-25%, to which he replied, 'I think so. Markets traded in a tight range and ended marginally higher amid mixed cues. After a flat start, the Nifty oscillated within a narrow band throughout the session and finally settled at 24,855.05.' 'Sentiment remained subdued due to lingering uncertainty over the trade deal, following the latest statement from the US President about potential tariffs on India, amid delays in finalising the agreement ahead of the August 1 deadline,' Ajit Mishra – SVP, Research, Religare Broking Limited, said. In Asian markets, Japan's Nikkei 225 index and Hong Kong's Hang Seng settled lower, while South Korea's Kospi and Shanghai's SSE Composite index ended in positive territory. European markets were quoting on a mixed note. The US markets ended lower on Tuesday (July 29, 2025). Global oil benchmark Brent crude declined 0.44% to $72.19 a barrel. On Tuesday (July 29, 2025), the Sensex jumped 446.93 points or 0.55%, to settle at 81,337.95. The Nifty climbed 140.20 points or 0.57%, to 24,821.10.
