Yamashita struggles and sees her Women's British Open lead shrink to 1 shot over Kim

Washington Post2 days ago
PORTHCAWL, Wales — Miyu Yamashita was crooked off the tee and struggled on the greens, a rough combination that led to a hard-fought round of 2-over 74 on Saturday that shrunk her lead to one shot over A Lim Kim in the Women's British Open.
Yamashita, who led by three shots going into the third round, did not hit a fairway over the last 11 holes and still managed to stay in front at Royal Porthcawl, though it wasn't easy.
She was on the verge of losing the lead on the 17th when she blasted out of a pot bunker all the way across the green to the fringe, some 40 feet away. She holed that putt for par, and then missed a birdie chance from just inside 6 feet on the par-5 closing hole.
That put Yamashita — who turned 24 on Saturday — at 9-under 207.
'Today I'll be just looking at what went wrong and what went right and analyzing the day and make the improvements that hopefully will lead to a better round tomorrow,' Yamashita said.
Kim put on a fabulous display as the wind got stronger with a 5-under 67. She had a chance to tie for the lead when she hit a 335-yard drive on the 18th hole with a helping wind and fast links turf. She went just long, used her putter from off the green and took three putts for par.
Even so, it puts her in the final group with Yamashita as Lim goes for her second major, having won the U.S. Women's Open in 2020 in Houston without fans during the COVID-19 pandemic.
'Honestly I'm not focused on the leader. I focus on my process and my shot and then my position,' Kim said.
And it's not just Kim with a chance.
Yamashita's struggles brought several possibilities in the final round, including the always entertaining Charley Hull of England. She shot a 66, going from 11 shots behind to within three shots of the lead as Hull goes for her first major.
'I just kind of enjoy chasing,' Hull said of playing from behind. 'It's more fun that way.'
Andrea Lee had a 67 and was two shots behind, followed by Hull, Megan Khang (68), Rio Takeda (74) and Minami Katsu, whose 65 matched the low score of the tournament.
'I think there will be a little bit of extra pressure on whoever is the 54-hole leader,' Lee said. 'Tomorrow is going to be pretty tough. Anything can happen out there. I think anyone within five shots has a chance at this championship honestly, so I'm just going to try and keep my head down and stick to my own game plan and try not to look at the leaderboard.'
The Women's British Open had the look of a Japanese duel, with Yamashita three shots ahead of Takeda and no one else closer than seven shots. But it was a struggle for Yamashita early with her putting, and then one of the straightest drivers lost her way.
She steadied herself with an approach — from the rough, of course — into 3 feet for birdie on No. 11, and a tee shot that settled 3 feet away for another birdie on the par-3 12th.
But playing out of the fescue caught up with her, and except for that 40-foot par putt on the 17th to keep her in the lead, it was a struggle to get done with the round.
Takeda wasn't much better, with two bogeys in four holes at the start and two more bogeys over the final five holes.
Lottie Woad, the rising English star who won last week in her professional debut, birdied the last hole for a 71 and wound up six shots behind.
Nelly Korda, the No. 1 player in women's golf, is likely to end the major championship season without a title. She shot 74 and fell nine shots behind. Korda has gone 13 tournaments without winning and risks losing her No. 1 ranking to Jeeno Thitikul depending on the final round.
The LPGA Tour already is off to a historic start by not having a multiple winner through 19 tournaments, a streak that could continue. Only Kim and Takeda from the top 10 on the leaderboard have won this year.

Callum Wilson to West Ham: Everything you need to know

West Ham United have completed the signing of free agent Callum Wilson following his Newcastle United exit. The 33-year-old has signed a one-year deal at the London Stadium. As part of this summer's transfer coverage on The Athletic, in addition to breaking news, tactical analysis and in-depth reads, our Transfers TLDR series (you can read them all here) will bring you a quick guide to each of the key deals. Wilson's career has never been straightforward. Coming through the academy at Coventry City, he struggled for lifts to training. Out on loan at National League sides, he suffered a foot fracture. After an impressive breakout season at Coventry earned him a move to Bournemouth in 2014, he won promotion and hit five goals in his first seven Premier League games — only to suffer an anterior cruciate ligament tear. Advertisement But he is a powerful goalscorer. Wilson scored 41 goals in 126 Premier League appearances for Bournemouth. On Tyneside, he was plagued by injuries and had to compete with Alexander Isak — but managed 47 goals in 113 Premier League outings. Cerys Jones Having seen little of Wilson in 2024-25, it is difficult to glean much about his form. Of his 18 Premier League appearances, 16 were from the bench and the majority were for less than 20 minutes. His only goal in 22 appearances across all competitions came against Birmingham City in the FA Cup. However, he can be a prolific goalscorer. His best top-flight tally is 18 goals, recorded in 2022-23; the previous campaign is a better example of his efficiency, though, scoring eight times in just 18 league appearances. That is one of three seasons with Newcastle where he averaged a goal just under every two league games. Wilson can be powerful, strong, fast, a nuisance for defenders — but only when he is fit, and history suggests it would be naive to expect him to be constantly available. As detailed below, his injury record is chequered, so expect his minutes to be managed. Cerys Jones Wilson does not have the hold-up play of Niclas Fullkrug nor the creativity of Jarrod Bowen, West Ham's other senior options at centre-forward. But he is an old-fashioned No 9 in the way he attacks the six-yard box for goals. Among centre-forwards to have aggregated 20 or more league goals over the last five Premier League seasons, Wilson ranks first in expected goals per shot at 0.23. He also ranks second in shot-to-goal conversion rate at 24 per cent (behind Isak's 25 per cent) and is capable of finishing with both feet and his head. Age and injuries have slowed him down, but Wilson has rounded out his game, developing an eye for passes into his attacking partners and a knack for winning fouls. If he can stay fit, West Ham have the creative players to help him flourish as an impact substitute. Anantaajith Raghuraman Extensive. Wilson's time at Newcastle was peppered with injury absences, which he admitted last season were 'frustrating' for all involved. His worst injuries came at Bournemouth when he suffered two ACL ruptures in consecutive seasons. Those long-term injuries, fortunately, have not reoccurred. However, there have been others. Among the most notable are hamstring problems in 2020-21 which saw him miss 10 league games for Newcastle (though he was still named player of the year), a four-month calf injury the following campaign, and a back injury that kept him out from July to November last year. Advertisement Injury (alongside competing with Isak) was the main reason Wilson only started 71 Premier League games in his five seasons at Newcastle. Cerys Jones 'Callum was never going to get to the Premier League and stand still,' his former Bournemouth team-mate Marc Pugh told The Athletic when Wilson moved to Newcastle in 2020. 'His work rate is exceptional and he wants to keep developing. 'To bounce back from (successive ACL injuries), it's a true testament to his character. 'It was such a challenging period for him but he was so mentally strong throughout. 'He'd be doing his rehab, staring out the gym window, while we were training. It was tough for him but it just made him more determined.' Cerys Jones Wilson's contract at Newcastle expired on June 30, leaving him free to find a new club after Newcastle opted against activating a one-year extension. Newcastle therefore received no fee, though will benefit from Wilson's wages falling off their books. West Ham haven't paid a transfer fee, and so no transfer levy applies either. The majority of the cost of signing Wilson will come in the form of his wages over his one-year deal, though those are heavily incentive-based. Chris Weatherspoon Newcastle paid £20m to bring Wilson north from Bournemouth five years ago, but weren't able to turn that into future profit, or even a fee at all. That doesn't mean there'll be no positive impact on their finances from the move. Comparative to 2024-25, Newcastle's wage bill will be lowered by Wilson's salary this season. Moreover, his departure reduces their transfer fee amortisation bill relative to last season. Wilson's amortisation cost last year was about £3m, by The Athletic's reckoning. Advertisement West Ham have paid no fee for Wilson, though may have incurred some agent fees on his signing. Those are amortised over contract length, but in Wilson's case he has only signed a one-year deal, so almost all of the costs of signing him will be booked into 2025-26 — unless he extends his contract at the London Stadium this season. The one small caveat is West Ham's accounting date running to May 31. That means one month's worth of wages and any fees related to his signing will fall into 2026-27 for PSR purposes, even if Wilson's stay in east London only lasts a year. Watch: the viral moment a U's photographer was 'flattened' by a pitch invader

THE moment a Colchester United snapper was sent sprawling after a fan invaded the pitch has gone viral. The U's faced off against Tranmere Rovers for the opening-day fixture of the EFL League Two on Saturday afternoon at the JobServe Community Stadium. The opposing team's Connor Jennings scored in the first 15 minutes of the match, but it wasn't until the 87th minute Kyreece Lisbie equalised. It was at this point a fan invaded the pitch to celebrate. The Gazette understands Mr Blaxall was left with some minor injuries. A video which captured the moment has since gone viral on social media. On X, the video has racked up 335,000 views, 844 likes, and 119 retweets. The Gazette's sports writer Jonathan Waldron was at the match. He said: "Poor Richard was just doing his job, trying to get pictures of the U's goal celebrations when he was flattened by a supporter who should not have been there. 'Thankfully, I think he's okay which is the main thing, but it could have been a lot worse, and it must have been a pretty scary moment for him." The U's fan who took the viral clip at the match said: "It was one of those surreal moments where you're not quite sure what you've just seen until you watch it back. "Seeing the video take off online and get over 300,000 views has been a bit mad. "I didn't expect it to blow up the way it did, I just hope the photographer is okay." The match ended in a draw and Lisbie spoke to The Gazette about his goal in the closing minutes of the game. The 21-year-old came off the bench and after scoring dedicated the goal to his late grandmother.

Manchester City midfielder Coombs signs new one-year deal

Manchester City midfielder Laura Coombs has signed a new one-year contract with the club. WSL Full-Time were informed of the news via an official club press release from The Cityzens this afternoon. The 34-year-old was set to be out of contract this summer but she will now remain at The Joie Stadium for another season. Coombs joined Manchester City from Liverpool in 2019 and she has gone on to make 135 appearances for the club in all competitions in which she has scored 21 goals. The midfielder has won the Adobe Women's FA Cup and Subway Women's League Cup with The Cityzens. Despite being in the latter years of her career, Coombs still has an important role to play both on and off the pitch and that has been recognised by Manchester City. After signing her new deal with The Cityzens, Coombs said 'It feels good. Last year, it was a bit of an up and down year for me injury-wise and then to have the backing of the Club and another chance to have another successful season with the Club has meant a lot to me. 'It feels like there's a lot going in behind the scenes and not just what you see on the pitch. I feel like it's a really good time to be involved with the Club and it's a really exciting time. 'The Club's only going to go one way so I'm very happy to be here.' Further Manchester City squad news will be revealed in due course.
