Moment female cop is punched in the face by Starbucks thief

Shocking footage shows the moment an off-duty detective was forced to defend herself after a man threw food at her inside a Starbucks in New York on Friday.
The 39-year-old female police officer was on her way to work when she saw a man inside the store in Manhattan's Midtown allegedly stealing food, according to The New York Post.
She then showed him her NYPD badge and walked him out of the store, but he came back and threw food at her, according to the footage and authorities.
He then takes a swing at her head, with the officer immediately taking a fighting stance on the footpath.
The man then lunges towards her with his fists, and the officer gets punched in the face.
The pair then engage in a short brawl before the man eventually scurries off – turning around momentarily and threatening to come back.
The police officer suffered a welt next to her eye, according to police, and was treated at the scene.
Mohamed Riad, 27, was taken into custody and faces charges of assault, criminal mischief, and petty larceny related to the incident, according to a criminal complaint.
The officer was lauded by the detective's union.
'It's no surprise to see an off-duty NYPD detective put themselves in harm's way to protect New Yorkers,' Detectives Endowment Association President Scott Munro said.
'It's what these courageous women and men do every day for our city,' he continued.
'We will do everything we can to make sure this violent criminal is held accountable.'
Mr Munro also criticised a Democratic mayoral candidate who proposed that social workers could manage calls related to the homeless.
'This is why social workers can't do police work,' he stated. 'What would they have done with him?'
Riad pleaded not guilty at his court appearance on Friday night and was held on $1000 ($A1517) cash bail.
It wasn't clear whether he would be able to make bail.
According to The Post, assaults on New York City police officers have increased by 63 per cent over the past six years.
There were 970 assaults on uniformed police in the city up until May this year, compared to 595 officers attacked by this stage in pre-Covid 2019.

Ryan Crowley, former Fremantle Dockers player, hit with more domestic violence charges against ex-partner

Former Fremantle Dockers player Ryan Crowley has appeared in a Perth court facing historical charges of assault, threatening to kill, and deprivation of liberty. Five of the six new offences relate to his former partner, and one count of deprivation of liberty is against another woman. It is the second time in less than two months Mr Crowley has appeared in court accused of multiple violent offences. All of those original charges were also against his former partner of five years. Mr Crowley was granted bail today by Magistrate Elizabeth Langdon despite the opposition of the police prosecution, which said he was a high risk of reoffending and due to his "propensity of violence towards the complainant". Bail was given on condition of a $40,000 surety and that he not contact either of the two women, he surrender his passport, not leave Western Australia, and report to police twice a week. His lawyer Mark Andrews told the court his client intended to plead not guilty to all the charges. Magistrate Langdon said she also granted bail because of the lengthy time it would take for the matters to get to trial, and because custody would be a greater ordeal for Mr Crowley due to his type one diabetes. But she warmed Mr Crowley if he was found guilty of all the charges he would face an immediate custodial sentence. In May, Mr Crowley had appeared in court in relation to different assault and deprivation of liberty charges. It was alleged at the time the 41-year-old choked and threatened a woman in the western Perth suburb of Claremont. In May, Mr Crowley was granted bail under strict conditions, which include reporting to police twice a week and not leaving the state. The new but historical charges he appeared in court for on Tuesday are one count of unlawful assault, and one count of threatening to kill, allegedly occurring in the Perth suburb of West Leederville on September 21, 2019. A further count of unlawful assault was from March 2020. He was also charged with intent to harm, deprivation of liberty and deprivation of liberty in circumstances of aggravation from March 2020. The first set of charges relating to the May court appearance included impeding the woman's breathing by applying pressure to her neck, making threats, unlawfully using a computer and deprivation of liberty in circumstances of aggravation. Mr Crowley played 188 games for the Dockers between 2003 and 2015, including the 2013 grand final which Fremantle lost to Hawthorn. He was later recruited by Essendon to help the club field a side while 34 of its players were suspended for the year, following its infamous supplements scandal. He was routinely used as a tagger, trying to limit the influence of the opposition's most dangerous midfielder. In 2015 he was suspended for 12 months by the AFL Anti-Doping Tribunal after he tested positive to a "specified" substance the previous year. At a media conference, then Fremantle CEO Steve Rosich confirmed the substance was contained in a painkiller which had not been not prescribed by a Fremantle doctor. He is due back in court on November 11 in relation to all the charges.

Jury to deliberate after Kiama MP's eight-week trial

A jury deciding the fate of a former NSW minister accused of assault are expected to begin deliberations on Wednesday morning. Gareth Ward, the NSW independent MP for Kiama, was charged in March 2022 with three counts of assault with act of indecency, an alternative charge of common assault against an 18-year-old man at Meroo Meadow in 2013, and intercourse without consent against a 24-year-old man in Potts Point in 2015. Since his arrest three years ago, the 43-year-old has denied the allegations and pleaded not guilty to all counts. In the Darlinghurst District Court on Tuesday, Judge Kara Shead SC finished her summing up of the case, and reminded the jury the onus of burden to prove each of the counts remains on the prosecution. After eight weeks of evidence, the jury are expected to begin their deliberations on Wednesday morning. In her closing address, Crown prosecutor Monika Knowles told the jury it is 'not a coincidence' that two men came forward with similar allegations. However, defence barrister David Campbell SC told the jury the crown had not discharged the burden it has in either of the two complainant's cases. The barrister urged the jury to find the MP not guilty on all counts. Mr Ward is alleged of assaulting a man, who had just turned 18 at the time of the alleged assault at Mr Ward's South Coast home in February 2013. It is also alleged the MP sexually assaulted another man – who was 24 at the time – at his Potts Point apartment in September 2015. The 43-year-old was charged by police in March 2022. Beginning his political career in 2011, Mr Ward was a councillor on the Shoalhaven Council before becoming the Liberal member for Kiama in 2011, a seat he has held since. He also held the role of NSW Minister for Families, Communities and Disability Services for just over two years.

Teenager charged after assault on tourists in Hobart CBD

A tourist's excitement for their first visit to Tasmania was quickly shattered when he and his wife were assaulted in Hobart on Monday night. Visitors Yoe Xi and Yan Xiaojing had arrived in the state earlier that day and were returning to their hotel after dinner when Mr Xi said they were attacked by two teenage girls near Franklin Square. Mr Xi said he wanted to share their experience in the hope it may help Hobart become a safer city. "It was very fast and frightening." He said his wife was grabbed by the hair and pulled to the ground, and they were both punched. He said the attack lasted about 40 seconds and they were both left with injuries to their hands and legs. "It was our first time visiting Tasmania and we were truly excited," Mr Xi said. Mr Xi and Ms Xiaojing are visiting from China on a 13-day trip to Australia. Two teens were arrested over the incident. Police say a 15-year-old girl has been charged, while the involvement of a 16-year-old girl is being investigated. Police said both teens were taken into custody and also charged with other crimes unrelated to the assault. Witness Avi Singh, the owner of Thai restaurant Bangkok City, said he helped the couple contact the police. Speaking to ABC Radio Hobart, Mr Singh said he and his wife were on the way home from work at about 8.30pm when they witnessed the incident. He said they assisted the couple before contacting police and helping to locate the girls, who were then taken into custody. Mr Singh said both Mr Xi and Ms Xiaojing were quite affected by what had happened. "They were completely lost. They haven't done anything. They [were] just taking photographs around the place. They're tourists." Mr Singh said it was particularly important for tourists in the city to feel safe. "If people are not safe here. Then where [are they safe]?" he asked. However, he said police reacted in "record time". Mr Xi also thanked the police for their assistance. Mr Xi said he hoped sharing stories of youth crime would lead to improved safety in the city. "Everyone who lives here deserves to feel not just amazed by the view … but also to be safe and comfortable in their community," he said. "We believe in kindness and tenderness, and because we hope [our story] … can help make Hobart an even better place." Earlier this year, Tasmania Police and the City of Hobart conducted a "safety blitz" across several Hobart suburbs. During the election campaign, the Liberal Party pledged to implement a range of "tough on crime" initiatives aimed at young offenders. At the time, Premier Jeremy Rockliff said if his government was re-elected, it would focus on crime in the community. The 15-year-old charged in relation to Monday night's alleged assault has been bailed to appear in court next month.
