This NYC food tour shares the real stories of Chinatown

Chinatown has a special place in Chloe Chan's heart. Born and raised in New Jersey, Chan and her family would make regular visits to Manhattan's Chinatown, picking up goods from local marts and eating at local restaurants—Chan even took piano lessons from a teacher in the area. After graduating from New York University with a degree in public health, she sought ways to stay involved in her community. So she signed up to be a volunteer tour guide at the Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA). Around the same time she started, Anna Huang also began, having previously worked as a tour guide in Boston's Chinatown. The two became friends while working as docents at the museum, giving tours to corporate clients and participating in special events. Eight months in, they began training to give tours outside of the museum and to host historical walking tours around Chinatown. But just as they got certified, the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the city, effectively turning the area into a ghost town.
'Everything is always open, especially Chinatown,' said Chan as she recalled the early days of the pandemic, mentioning that whispers of the virus had reached the area in January. 'It was such a hub for nightlife, and people always go after a night of drinking. It was really jarring to see.'
Overnight, restaurants, bars and small businesses closed in the area, many for good. Alongside concerns for public health, the Asian-American community faced a rise in AAPI-hate due to racial stereotyping and misinformation. In light of this, Chan and Huang decided they could use their shared historical knowledge to combat racism and bring about a positive change in their community.
'We thought this was a teaching moment where we could draw parallels against history because this is not the first time we've gone through something like this,' said Chan, citing the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 that restricted immigration into the United States, which particularly impacted Chinese immigrants. 'That's what the museum really prepared us for—this moment where we could be of use to the community.'
And so at the height of the pandemic, the two formed the Mott Street Girls (MSG). The name holds a double meaning—one that alludes to one of the most popular streets in Chinatown, while the acronym of the business, MSG, nods to the umami flavor compound commonly used in Asian cuisine. Their mission? To make Chinese American history and culture more accessible through public tours, education via social media and working with local community organizations. Differentiating themselves from other tour guides, particularly those led by outsiders with questionable sourcing, Chan and Huang leveraged their shared heritages and skill sets to create tours for the community, by the community.
'Being second-generation Chinese Americans, we've experienced what it's like to be a marginalized group in the community, faced certain barriers and we lived through COVID," said Chan. "We [are] the best candidates to tell the stories of our community.'
Currently, the volunteer-based tour company hosts two types of tours with slots available every other week. Putting what they learned from the museum into practice is the Relive Life Under the Chinese Exclusion Act tour. Their most popular option, the tour guides attendees through what life was like for Chinese Americans when they first arrived in the United States, from the barriers they endured to the eventual creation of Chinatowns across the country.
Meanwhile, Flavors of Old Chinatown Food Tour tells the story of the community through its food. While other tours focus on what's buzzing, be it famous restaurants or where to get the best bubble tea, MSG's food tour focuses on small, mom-and-pop stores. Stops include the area's oldest tofu shop and businesses that opened up post-pandemic. Yet, both Chan and Huang are careful to center the people behind the food.
'During COVID, a lot of people heard statistics about Chinatown—the revenue that people lost and how many businesses closed. But you don't develop that deeper relationship with the community until you hear their stories, right?" said Chan. "Actually, step inside their stories, engage with the owners and taste a bite of their most famous dish. That's what we wanted to do with our tours: tell authentic stories of the people that have lived, worked and made a life for themselves in Chinatown.'
Five years later, MSG's mission has expanded to fortifying Chinatown for years to come. Incorporating social justice into their business, each tour highlights current issues affecting the community, from lingering effects of COVID-19 to the construction of the world's tallest mega jail in the area. MSG's website acts as a resource with interactive guides that map shops, bakeries and tea shops in both Manhattan's Chinatown and Flushing, plus a backlog of over 60 articles that tell the stories of businesses in the area. The company has collaborated with other nonprofits and community boards, including Send Chinatown Love and Run for Chinatown. They also began working with local institutions, including Poster House, with a coming tour with The Met on the horizon.
On their social media, Chan and Huang highlight Chinatowns found around the world, showcasing communities in Calgary, Canada, and Incheon, South Korea. And while Chan is regularly asked if MSG plans on hosting tours outside of Manhattan's Chinatown (New York has nine Chinatowns in total), Chan knows that her mission is here.

Eat Out to Help Out, the government scheme aimed at encouraging people to return to restaurants during the pandemic, launched five years ago this week. From the outset, it came in for plenty of criticism. It was costly, controversial and possibly premature, its critics say. Bereaved families claim people died because of the scheme. These criticisms might be valid, but they've also obscured something else: the fact that, for many – especially young people – this policy didn't just bring food onto tables. It marked a return to normal life after weeks of lockdown. We queued. We booked. We ordered that second starter. For a few wonderful weeks, tables were full, pub gardens were loud, and weekday evenings took on the glow of Friday nights. It wasn't just about food. It was about re-entering the world. I didn't realise it at the time – no one did – but Eat Out to Help Out became, for many people, one of the few bright spots in 2020, a year defined by fear, isolation and loss. At the time, I was head of behavioural insight at HMRC and fed advice into the scheme's design. I don't know how influential it was, but I found it unusually exciting – not just because it was bold, but because it set out to change how people felt, not just their bank balance. It was a rare moment when policy engaged with perceptions, not just price points. And it worked — in ways we hadn't fully anticipated. What I noticed in that month wasn't just economic activity – it was emotional reanimation. People weren't just eating out. They were getting dressed again. Choosing where to sit. Seeing people across a table, not through a screen. It sounds small. But after months of lockdown, rules and rationed pleasure, it felt like momentum. We often talk about the long tail of the pandemic's effects on young people: the stalled careers, the missed milestones, the mental health struggles. It's worth remembering that, in a year of cancellations and constraints, this was the rare moment when they were told: go out. Be with friends. Rejoin the world. And they did. In just one month, over 160 million discounted meals were claimed – more than two per person across the UK. It wasn't just a treat. It was structure. Something to look forward to. Restaurants filled. So did diaries. We started planning again. Sales in hair styling products rose 17 per cent, hair removal products 11 per cent. People weren't just leaving the house – they were preparing to be seen. For many who worked in hospitality – also disproportionately young – EOHO didn't just bring them joy as customers, but employment as staff. They were needed again. The scheme, as I've said, had its critics. There are serious concerns about its role in the second wave of Covid. Some saw it as wasteful – a subsidy for those who would have eaten out anyway. Both perspectives deserve reflection. But let's not ignore the fact that this scheme gave people something more than economic support. It gave them a reason to leave the house, to put on proper shoes again. None of this means government should subsidise people's meals out during normal times. But it does mean we should pay attention to the emotional reverberations of policy — not just economic outcomes. For a moment, Eat Out to Help Out made people feel like things were turning a corner. As we reflect on the long tail of youth disaffection today, it's worth asking: what if more policies aimed not just to recover — but to rekindle? August 2020 opened up a tantalising possibility.

TASTE TEST: Harley's in Meliden

Last month, Harley's in Meliden was awarded a 1 out of 5 rating by the Food Standards Agency, following an inspection on June 12. It came two years after a rating of 4 in June, 2023. From word-of-mouth, I knew that Harley's was a very popular destination for many people. Inside Harley's in Meliden. Hygiene ratings do no reflect on the quality of the food served, it is concerned with cleanliness, hygiene, and food management, but I was keen to find out for myself. So I visited for breakfast. Often described as a "hidden gem," Harley's is tucked away on the Craig Fawr Industrial Estate on Meliden Road. Harley's in Meliden. The site gives in a truck stop vibe, but on entering I found a cosy cafe that was homely, clean, and welcoming. I certainly had no qualms about eating there. I was given a friendly greeting and a menu and chose my table. In the interest of a thorough review, I ordered two breakfast dishes (don't judge me!). First came Eggs Royale, which is essentially Eggs Benedict of Florentine with smoked salmon replacing the ham or spinach. Eggs Royale at Harley's in Meliden. My first impression was wow, the presentation of the dish was very good. Was I really in a small cafe on an industrial estate in North Wales? Earlier in the summer, I'd had the same dish at the lauded Porth Eirias in Colwyn Bay. It terms of presentation, Harley's compared more than favourably. In quality too, the eggs were perfectly poached with runny yolks and the muffins were the perfect combination of crunch and fluffiness. Hash browns. I also added a side of hash browns on the recommendation of one of the staff members. I was glad I did. Similar in size to McDonald's hash browns, but far less greasy. They were golden and crunchy, a far cry from the anaemic stodge that passes as hash browns elsewhere. I would recommend giving them a try. This was a very good start indeed. I also ordered the American pancake stack. Initially I went for a more dessert option with fresh fruit and cream but at the last minute switched to the classic USA combo of bacon and maple syrup. The pancakes were huge, twice the size of others I've had, with a homemade quality. Pancakes with bacon and maple syrup at Harley's. The bacon was not the crispy American-style variety that is almost used as a garnish across the Atlantic. Atop my generous stack of pancakes was a equally generous helping of good old British back bacon. I missed the crispy snap of American-style bacon, but the bacon was thick and gave the salty, umami hit that this dish needs to cut through the sweetness of the syrup. Coffee. My one regret is that I had consumed too much food. In most cafes it wouldn't have been a problem, but the portions at Harley's are very generous. I would happily return to try some of the other menu items (one at a time!). On Tripadvisor, Harley's has a rating of 4.9 out of 5 based on 18 reviews. eileenprice445: "Been to Harleys a couple of times for an outstanding breakfast. Light bite menu varied and all locally sourced. "Took the opportunity to book a recent one off roast menu. Absolutely outstanding. Has to be the best available around." Chris E: "Spot on breakfast, great value, brilliant service, food cooked to perfection, and well priced. Well worth the effort to find it." Ashlea: "Hidden gem! Just had the most lovely family breakfast at Harley's. Would highly reccommend if close by. Staff were friendly and food was yummy!" Alan Dawson: "Spot on. Excellent food, service, surroundings and price. A really enjoyable meal. Difficult to see how they could make it any better. Plus parking right outside the door." The scheme helps people choose where to eat out or shop for food by giving them clear information about businesses' hygiene standards. Run the scheme in partnership with local authorities in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, the scheme gives businesses a rating from 5 to 0 which is displayed at their premises and online so customers make more informed choices about where to buy and eat food. 5 – hygiene standards are very good 4 – hygiene standards are good 3 – hygiene standards are generally satisfactory 2 – some improvement is necessary 1 – major improvement is necessary 0 – urgent improvement is required To sum up, the food served at Harley's is fresh, well-presented, and very tasty. The atmosphere was friendly and welcoming, and it was clear that many of the diners that day were regular customers. Always a good sign. With the enthusiasm and care going into the presentation food, I'm sure that the current low rating will be improved when it is inspected again.
