'Argentina's lithium reserves of great interest to India', says MEA
Addressing a press conference, MEA's Secretary (East) P Kumaran noted the efforts of Coal India Limited and Khanij Bidesh India Limited to pick up critical minerals assets in other countries for India.
"Argentina is a part of the Lithium Triangle. It is of great interest to us. We had two Indian public sector companies, Coal India Limited and a consortium called KABIL, which is specifically tasked with picking up critical minerals and assets outside India. They have signed five concession agreements and are working on finalizing investments and working out the implementation of the investments in such a way that minerals can be produced here, refined and taken to India for various purposes and are working on finalising investments to implement them in a manner that allows minerals to be produced, refined, and exported," Kumaran said.

MEA's Secretary East also noted that two private sector companies owned by Indians have also invested in lithium concession in Argentina and hoped for more cooperation between the two nations.
"There are two private sector companies: one from India, called Greenco, and another Indian-owned company based in the UAE, World Metal Alloys, which is also invested in lithium concessions in Argentina. Hopefully, we will have more cooperation in the coming years," Kumaran said.
During his visit to Argentina, Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussed cooperation in the energy and critical minerals sectors with Argentine President Javier Milei, underlining India's growing energy and industrial needs while emphasising that Buenos Aires can serve as a "reliable partner."
MEA's Secretary (East) Kumaran emphasised that Argentina's rich reserves of critical minerals, such as lithium, copper, and rare earth elements, align with India's need for its clean energy transition and industrial growth.
"The two leaders also had an opportunity to discuss cooperation in the energy and critical mineral sectors. The Prime Minister underlined India's growing energy and industrial needs and emphasised that Argentina could serve as a reliable partner in supporting India's developmental journey," Kumaran said.
"Argentina's rich reserves of critical minerals, including lithium, copper and rare earth elements, align with India's need for secure and sustainable resources to drive its clean energy transition and industrial growth," he added.
Argentina is the third leg of PM Modi's five-nation tour after Ghana, and Trinidad and Tobago. It will be followed by visits to Brazil and Namibia.

Gandhi's only known oil portrait, painted during 1931 London visit, sells for over ₹1.75 crore at Bonhams auction
A rare oil portrait of Mahatma Gandhi, painted in 1931 during his historic visit to London, has been sold for £152,800 (approximately ₹ 1.75 crore) at a Bonhams auction — more than double its estimated price of £50,000 to £70,000. The painting, created by British artist Clare Leighton, is believed to be the only oil portrait for which Gandhi personally sat. According to Bonhams, it had never before been offered at auction and was the top lot in the "Travel and Exploration" sale held online between July 7 and 15. The portrait was completed during Gandhi's attendance at the Second Round Table Conference in London, where he represented the Indian National Congress to discuss constitutional reforms for India. The artist, Clare Leighton, was introduced to Gandhi by political journalist Henry Noel Brailsford, a known supporter of the Indian independence movement. The artwork remained in Leighton's personal collection until her death in 1989, after which it was passed on to her family. The portrait carries a complex history; Leighton's family recalled that it may have been attacked with a knife by an RSS activist during a public exhibition in 1974. Documentation attached to the frame confirms the painting was restored that same year by the Lyman Allyn Museum Conservation Laboratory. This is not the first time a portrait of Gandhi has fetched a significant price at auction. In 2017, a rare pencil portrait of Gandhi sold for £32,500 — roughly four times its estimated value.

ED summons Meta, Google on July 28 for ads on betting sites
Representational Image NEW DELHI: Meta and Google, being investigated by ED for hosting advertisements on their platforms for illegal betting sites, have been given a fresh date of July 28 to appear before the probe agency, after they sought adjournment of the summons issued for Monday. Sources said the tech companies sought more time to collect documents sought by the agency in their ongoing probe against some illegal betting sites operating in India. These betting sites have collected hundreds of crores from Indian citizens by engaging in illegal activity. ED in a statement in Jan this year had said that scammers have been posting ads on platforms like Google, Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, offering betting options, part-time jobs, online shopping and jobs, among others. Victims register through a link provided to them and pay a small initial amount, like Rs 100. The scammers then ask for more deposits, promising higher payouts. "However, when victims attempt to withdraw their earnings, they are told to complete more tasks and pay additional fees. This cycle continues until victims deposit large sums, often in lakhs, only to realise they have been scammed." " Earlier, ED had attached assets worth Rs 337 crore in a crackdown against illegal betting related to Lok Sabha results of 2024 and unauthorised broadcast of IPL cricket matches. "The attached assets included demat account holdings, lands, flats and commercial warehouses located at Ajmer (Rajasthan), Kutch (Gujarat), Daman, Thane and Mumbai (Maharashtra) worth Rs 220 crore of the online betting app Fairplay and its promoters," the agency had said. This was in addition to assets worth Rs 117 crore attached earlier. The funds laundered through shell companies have been siphoned off to overseas shell entities based out of Hong Kong SAR, China and Dubai. "More than 400 bank accounts of shell entities were found to be used for these purposes, which are under examination along with trailing/utilisation of funds collected from the public by Fairplay," ED had said.
