Seven charged over 'hate crime' after Aberdeen fans 'mock disabled St Mirren fan'
Seven people have been charged in connection with a hate crime after footage allegedly showed Aberdeen fans mocking a disabled St Mirren supporter at a football match earlier this year.
The Record previously reported how the footage was taken at St Mirren Park on Saturday, 3 May. In the clip, a group of football fans in the Aberdeen stand can be heard chanting at a Buddies fan on the opposition side.
Police Scotland branded the clip as " despicable" at the time and confirmed the video was being investigated as a hate crime.
The force has now confirmed that five men aged 23, 23, 22, 22 and 19 and two male youths, both aged 16, have been charged with threatening and abusive behaviour at the St Mirren vs Aberdeen FC football match.
A report has been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.
Constable Louise Sung, from the Paisley Police Office, said: "Thank you to both clubs for their co-operation and assistance in our investigation."
A Police Scotland statement added: "Seven people have been charged in connection with a hate crime that took place at a football match in St Mirren Park, Paisley.
"Five men aged 23, 23, 22, 22 and 19 and two male youths, both aged 16, have been charged with threatening and abusive behaviour at a St Mirren vs Aberdeen FC football match on Saturday, 3 May, 2025. A report has been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."

St Mirren took a 1-0 win at their home ground when Mikael Mandaron scored in the 60th minute putting Aberdeen behind Hibernian FC on May 3 with three games to go.
Aberdeen finished the 2024/35 season fifth, while winning the Scottish Cup for the first time in 35 years just weeks after.
A spokesperson for Aberdeen FC said at the time of the incident: 'We are aware of a clip that has circulated on social media from Saturday's match at the SMISA Stadium.
'The chant is totally unacceptable and not befitting the outstanding Aberdeen support that we experience from the vast majority, both at Pittodrie and on the road.
'We would like to apologise to the St Mirren fan involved and will work with the relevant authorities to assist in their investigation.'

Police say there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident, but a report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal. A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "Around 4.05pm on Wednesday, 16 July, 2025, officers were called to the London Road area of Glasgow following the death of a man. "His death is being treated as unexplained, however there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances. A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."

Parents deny killing newborn baby found beaten to death on hospital ward
Brendon Staddon suffered injuries to his head, neck, legs and jaw on March 5 last year. A mum and dad accused of murdering their premature baby son in a special care baby unit told officers they did not harm him, a court heard. Brendon Staddon suffered injuries to his head, neck, legs and jaw on March 5 last year. The infant's parents, Daniel Gunter, 27, and Sophie Staddon, 23, are both accused of murder and causing or allowing the two-week-old baby's death on the ward at the Yeovil District Hospital in Somerset. Brendon's injuries were described as 'catastrophic' by the prosecution and Bristol Crown Court heard nurses discovered the youngster after Staddon told nurses her son was cold and asked them to check on him. As reported by the Mirror, the baby - who was born at 33 weeks' gestation and weighed 1.83kg at birth - was carried to the resuscitation area but did not respond to treatment and was pronounced dead at 4.59am. Jurors at Bristol Crown Court were read transcripts of interviews Staddon and Gunter had with police after their arrest on Wednesday. Staddon told police she had been woken in the night by Gunter telling her to inform nurses that Brendon was cold. She said: 'I went to check him. I felt him. He was cold. I told the nurses. They turned the light on and saw he was blue. I started crying. Dan pulled me away and said 'let them do their job'. I was crying and really upset. Dan was also upset. Doctors and nurses came in and surrounded Brendon.' Staddon said the couple initially waited inside before going out for some fresh air, with police officers arresting them a short time later. 'I remember asking if they were telling me my baby was dead,' she said in interview. 'I had done nothing to harm Brendon at all. I love him. He was my everything. I would not have harmed him.' Gunter was recorded as saying after his arrest: 'How can you say that we killed our baby?' and 'That kid was my world, I would do anything for him'. In a statement provided to police at interview, Gunter described how Staddon had been sleeping in a bed while he was in a chair, with Brendon's cot behind a screen. He told how he heard the baby do a 'little cry' at about 3am and checked on him. 'He was in his cot, on his back,' Gunter said. 'He was white. We touched his skin and he was cold and white. We went to get the nurse. They came in and said he was not alright. This was the last time I saw my baby.' He added: 'At no stage did I do anything to Brendon that could have caused him any injury. I was with Sophie the whole time and she didn't do anything either.' In a separate statement, Gunter said: 'I would never hurt my baby boy.' A post-mortem examination found Brendon died of 'blunt force impact(s) head injury' with multiple non-accidental injuries to the head. Charles Row KC, prosecuting, told jurors earlier in the trial that the baby was covered in bruises to his face, scalp, chest and abdomen, shoulder, hands, legs and feet. 'There was hardly a part of his body that was spared,' Mr Row said. The jury heard that Gunter and Staddon had an on-off relationship, with allegations that he was violent towards her on occasion. Gunter and Staddon, both of no fixed address, deny charges of murder and causing or allowing Brendon's death. Their trial continues.

Scots footballer on parole weeks after jail sentence for £600k drug smuggling plot

A Scots football star who took part in a £600k drug smuggling plot has begged for forgiveness while driving a flash Tesla and getting his hair braided after being released on parole. Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, 34, was jailed for four years in June for orchestrating the importation of a 60kg (132lb) haul but has now been released on parole after his time on remand was taken into account. Speaking for the first time since being released, Emmanuel-Thomas apologised to Greenock Morton - the club he was playing for when arrested. Posting on his personal Instagram, the striker - who also played for Arsenal, Aberdeen and Livingston, among other clubs - said: "Apologies to all affiliated with Greenock Morton. "I let you guys down big time, hopefully you can forgive me. If the chance comes along I will right my wrongs but that will be up to the club, if it does not I wish you all the best and thank you." He also posted a video of himself driving a Tesla, getting his hair braided and training on a football pitch - seemingly in London. Emmanuel-Thomas was arrested after a drugs haul was found at London Stansted Airport, Essex, on September 2. His girlfriend, 33-year-old Yasmin Piotrowska, and her friend, Rosie Rowland, 29, had been recruited to travel to Thailand and smuggle the cannabis back. After landing in London on a flight from Bangkok, the pair were stopped and their suitcases searched - with officers finding a total of 60kg of cannabis in their four suitcases. Piotrowska, of Kensal Green, London, and Rowland, of Chelmsford, Essex, were also charged with smuggling cannabis. However, the women said they believed they were transporting gold, and they were acquitted. It is believed Thomas, who was living in Gourock, near Glasgow, was the intermediary between suppliers in Thailand and drug pushers in the UK. The investigation revealed that with Thomas's encouragement, the women had made a near identical trip - all expenses paid and a promised payment of £2,500 - a few months earlier in July. On his way to custody after being arrested, he said unprompted: "I just feel sorry for the girls." Emmanuel-Thomas was once a prodigy at Arsenal, and tipped for the top but he slid down the footballing pyramid and was tempted into crime during "significant financial hard times" when out of contract, his barrister said during sentencing.
