Mount Carmel soars past Nazareth in sectional with Jake Matise on mound. His teammates know why. ‘This kid deals.'

Chicago Tribune05-06-2025
Before the season, it would have been easy for opponents to overlook uncommitted junior righty Jake Matise on a Mount Carmel pitching staff that featured guys going to Miami and Notre Dame.
But Matise has blossomed into the ace. He was named the Catholic League Blue's pitcher of the year. And he felt really good about his chances Wednesday night against a loaded Nazareth team.
'Every time, I just know what I'm capable of,' Matise said. 'I trust my preparation and I know what I'm able to do, so it's pretty easy to go out there every time and be confident in myself.'
Matise backed up that confidence, allowing just two hits in a complete game as the Caravan knocked off the Roadrunners 6-1 in a Class 4A Reavis Sectional semifinal that was played at Triton College in River Grove due to field conditions from the rain.
Wake Forest recruit TJ McQuillan went 2-for-3 with an RBI double and a run for fifth-seeded Mount Carmel (25-13), while Illinois commit Joey Ireland contributed a two-run single. Wharton County recruit Kolin Adams scored three runs and Anthony Chavez added an RBI double.
Mount Carmel will take on top-seeded Brother Rice (34-3) — a 2-1 winner over Oak Park-River Forest — at 11 a.m. Saturday in the sectional final at Reavis. The Catholic League Blue rivals split two regular-season games.
Matise, meanwhile, retired the first 12 batters for second-seeded Nazareth (31-7). He finished with eight strikeouts and scattered two walks.
Mount Carmel coach Brian Hurry knew Matise could deliver in the big moment.
'He certainly has not been overlooked by our team, his teammates in the dugout or everyone on the coaching staff,' Hurry said. 'He's been a great pitcher for two years now.
'He's a fierce competitor. He attacks the zone. He's able, in these big games, to slow the game down and not make the moment bigger than it is and just execute.'
Matise has formed a strong duo with Notre Dame recruit Connor Elenteny as Miami commit Ian Tosi missed the entire season due to an injury.
'With Ian hurt, I kind of had to fill in a bigger role and take over his spot, and I think I've done it well,' Matise said. 'I'm not too worried about not getting a lot of attention before.
'I'm glad for those guys and where they're going to college, but hopefully I'm going somewhere, too. There were some coaches out here.'
Matise (8-1) — whose the lone loss came way back on March 29 against Lockport — could hardly believe it when he found out he was the Catholic League Blue's pitcher of the year.
'That actually really caught me by surprise,' Matise said. 'I wasn't really thinking about it. Then my coach calls me in the morning and he tells me, and I was just in shock.
'I was like, 'Whoa, I really did this. I really won it, in the CCL Blue, the best conference, in my opinion.' It's really a huge honor. It's super cool.'
Mount Carmel took a quick lead Wednesday night on McQuillan's RBI double in the first inning and broke things open with four runs in the third.
The Caravan knew Matise would take it home from there.
'This kid had a no-hitter through four innings and only gave up two hits in seven innings against Nazareth,' McQuillan said. 'That's a great team over there, but we felt really confident with him out there. This kid deals.'
Junior catcher Mario Medina took that belief in Matise a step further.
'In my eyes, every time Jake's out there, it's a win,' Medina said. 'We've just got to have the bats to back him up.'
Matise, who has pitched since he was 6 years old, has been totally focused on that aspect of the game since he started high school and gave up hitting.
There's a simple reason why he loves his position.
'Just getting other dudes out,' he said. 'It feels good.'

Luis Gil to debut Sunday as Yankees face growing injury concerns

Luis Gil to debut Sunday as Yankees face growing injury concerns originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Yankees are still shopping for starting pitching ahead of Thursday's trade deadline, but they might already have an option in-house. Manager Aaron Boone told Jomboy Media that Luis Gil could return to the majors as soon as Sunday in Miami, depending on how his rehab start goes Tuesday night. Gil is scheduled to throw 75 pitches for Double-A Somerset, and if he checks every box, the Yankees may slot him right into the big-league rotation this weekend. Gil hasn't pitched in the majors since undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2022. But the 26-year-old right-hander has worked his way through a cautious buildup in the minors, showing flashes of the swing-and-miss stuff that made him an electric presence during his 2021 debut. So far in five rehab outings, Gil has racked up 22 strikeouts across 14.2 innings, with a fastball that's hovered around 96 mph. The command is still coming—but the Yankees may not have the luxury of waiting much longer. With Gerrit Cole lost for the season following Tommy John surgery in March and Clarke Schmidt out as well, the Yankees are running out of reliable arms. They've been linked to multiple starters on the trade market but remain hesitant to overpay in a seller's market. That's where Gil could change the equation. If he's sharp Tuesday night and recovers well, Sunday in Miami could mark his long-awaited return to the big leagues—and a much-needed internal boost for a rotation running on fumes. Whether the Yankees buy or stand pat, Luis Gil might be ready to help from within. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jul 29, 2025, where it first appeared.

Yankees star Jazz Chisholm Jr commits egregious baserunning blunder, faces social media backlash

New York Yankees star Jazz Chisholm Jr. took heat on social media on Saturday over a head-scratching baserunning blunder against his former team, the Miami Marlins. Chisholm was on first base in the top of the second inning with Paul Goldschmidt up at bat. The Yankees' batter popped up to Marlins' second baseman Xavier Edwards. Chisholm was too far off first base and got caught napping. Edwards then threw the ball to first for the inning-ending double play. Chisholm was criticized by the Yankees' announcers during the broadcast as well as fans on social media for the brain fart. Yankees manager Aaron Boone also received some backlash on social media. "What was Chisholm thinking?" Yankees play-by-play man Michael Kay asked. Color commentator Paul O'Neill was left in shock, saying, "What is going on?" Boone and first base coach Travis Chapman also had an animated conversation in the dugout. Chishlom said afterward he wouldn't have changed anything, adding that he was trying to be aggressive on the basepaths by forcing Edwards to possibly make an error. "I was just trying to be aggressive, already playing with both the middle infielders out there," he said, via The Athletic. "I saw something that I thought they were going to do. He deked it like he was going to do it. He didn't do it. Still trying to be aggressive because I played here before. I know how the field plays. Sometimes you get aggressive and you get caught up and you make an out." Boone said he didn't think about taking Chisholm out of the game. New York lost the game, 2-0. The Yankees only mustered up two hits on Miami. Chisholm was 0-for-2 with a walk and a strikeout.

How CJ Daniels' veteran presence is impacting the Hurricanes' receiver room

CJ Daniels never considered himself much of a vocal guy. He knew that was going to change shortly after he joined the Miami Hurricanes. When he transferred to UM for his sixth and final season of college football, Daniels immediately became the elder statesman in a Hurricanes wide receiver room filled with young talent. He knew there would be an onus placed upon him to be the needed veteran presence from inside the room. It was a challenge wide receivers coach Kevin Beard gave to Daniels almost immediately. And Daniels was ready for that opportunity. 'Coming in, coach Beard told me, 'You've got a young group, man. It's a lot of characters and it's a lot of things to manage,'' Daniels said. 'And for me, I wanted to challenge myself this year and put that on my plate because I think I'm more than capable of doing that. Just leading these young guys and holding them accountable, and them holding me accountable as well too, I think it goes hand in hand, man. I'm a guy that they can come and ask questions. They can just come and kick it with me. I think that's the main thing. I definitely think that I have done a great job so far at the leadership role, and I want to continue to do that. I just want to continue to build a great bond with these guys.' His teammates will certainly attest to that. Sophomore Ny Carr said during spring practices that Daniels made it a point to meet with every receiver on the first day the whole team was together. After that, it was Daniels taking charge of meetings on practice days even before Beard got into the room. 'He's to the point where he wants the whole room to be on the same level,' Carr said. 'He wants us to be leaders. He's put in the time with us. It's kind of like an assistant receivers coach right now.' Added fellow sophomore Joshisa 'JoJo' Trader: 'He's the older guy. We all look up to him.' Indeed, Daniels has been around the proverbial college football block a few times. He spent the four seasons of his career at Liberty before playing at LSU last season. He enters his lone season at Miami with 148 career catches for 2,434 yards and 21 touchdowns. His best season came in 2023 at Liberty, when he caught 55 passes for 1,067 yards and 10 touchdowns to help the Flames go 13-1 and earn a berth in the Fiesta Bowl. 'He's a worker,' Beard said. 'You don't have to tell him to catch balls on the JUGS machine. He's the one initiating it. He's kind of been through it, and he knows he has a lot of young guys behind him, so he's trying to show them the way. ... That's really what I've respected from his approach. And we're gonna need it to keep continuing to get better.' Miami is replacing its top four receivers from last season's top-ranked offense. The quartet of Xavier Restrepo, Jacolby George, Sam Brown and Isaiah Horton combined for 3,004 receiving yards — 66.4 percent of Miami's production — and 26 touchdowns. Expect Daniels to be one of the players Miami leans on to offset that loss in production. He'll be part of the Hurricanes' contingent to get significant reps on the outside, along with Trader, BYU transfer Keelan Marion and true freshman Josh Moore. The trio of Cincinnati transfer Tony Johnson, true freshman Malachi Toney and junior Ray Ray Joseph are competing to be UM's primary slot receiver but Johnson and Toney could also get reps on the outside. Daniels in particular is also excited about the additions of Marion and Johnson, who transferred to Miami after spring practices concluded, to give the group a more veteran look. 'I think they've already added value because of the mindset that they had coming in,' Daniels said. 'It was just like they were in here in the building a lot, and they really wanted to learn the offense so that when we get on the field, there was no thinking. There was no kinks, no anything that they had to figure out. They took that on themselves. And I really appreciate them guys for doing that because it means a lot, not just for me, but as a team. It's gonna go a long way for sure.'
