
Oropouche virus ‘massively underdiagnosed' in Latin America, new study suggests
Closely related to the Zika and Dengue viruses, Oropouche is transmitted by biting midges and mosquitoes. It poses a particular risk to pregnant women, having been linked to stillbirths and serious birth defects.
The virus was first detected outside of Brazil – where it is endemic – in October 2023, when it began spreading rapidly across other South American and Caribbean countries. Since then, over 20,000 cases and four deaths have been reported.
However, a new study published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases suggests that the virus may have been circulating across the region undetected since as early as 2001.
Researchers analysed 9,400 blood samples collected between 2001 and 2022 from patients in Bolivia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Peru. They found that at least 6.3 per cent – nearly 600 individuals – had antibodies against Oropouche, indicating past infection.
There were significant regional variants, however; while antibodies were present in two per cent of samples from Costa Rica, they appeared in five per cent of samples from Ecuador and over 10 per cent of samples from the Amazon region.
People living in higher altitudes were also less likely to have experienced a previous Oropouche infection than those at warmer, lower altitudes – which offer more favourable conditions for the insects that transmit the disease.
'Our data show that Oropouche virus is massively under-diagnosed in Latin America,' said Professor Jan Drexler, head of the Virus Epidemiology Laboratory at the Institute of Virology at Charité and lead author of the study.
'We still know relatively little about the virus, the consequences of an infection, including on unborn babies, require further investigation and it's not yet clear whether there are parallels with the Zika virus,' he added.
The researchers said that Oropouche cases are often confused with dengue fever, which is widespread in Latin America, because they cause similar symptoms including high fevers, headaches, and muscle pain.
The study also found the El Niño phenomena – a naturally occurring weather pattern which creates warmer and wetter weather – significantly increases transmission of Oropouche, by creating conditions in which midges and mosquitoes can thrive. The 2023-2024 El Niño was one of the strongest on record, and was exacerbated by climate change.
'I think it's possible that Oropouche virus will become even more widespread in the future as climate change progresses,' Dr Drexler said.
The authors of the study say the findings emphasise the need for the development of an Oropouche vaccine, which currently does not exist.
They also recommend that healthcare workers in the Americas are better educated on the signs and symptoms of Oropouche virus, and that it should be considered when treating anyone with unexplained fevers, pregnancy complications, or in the case of unexplained death.

Europe's new Ariane 6 rocket successfully launched from there earlier this year, more than 10 years after it was commissioned and five years later than originally planned. Scotland has set its sights on becoming a leader in the European coterie of aspiring space nations, and has moved a significant step closer to achieving this ambition with today's announcement that Skyrora has become the first company in the UK to be granted permission for for vertical rocket launches that company plans to carry out from the SaxaVord spaceport in the Shetland Isles. SaxaVord was granted permission to conduct launches by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) in December 2023, making it the UK's first licenced spaceport. "Not only to unlock commercial activity for companies that need to access space and to help achieve the government's objectives for becoming a global player in the space sector, but also from a strategic defence consideration." Growing global uncertainty exemplified by the Russian invasion of Ukraine underscores the truth of this statement from Mr Levykin, whose company has suffered the direct effects of the war in his home country. A 1998 graduate from the Zaporizhzhia National Technical University with a Master's degree in computer science, Mr Levykin spent his early career working in the online dating sector. This included a spell as an executive at the now-defunct Cupid dating empire based in Edinburgh. He moved to Silicon Valley to run another IT company based there after selling his shares in Cupid, but returned to his former home in [[Edinburgh]] to set up Skyrora and its parent company Skyrora Ventures in 2017. The rocket company has been making its SkyLark vehicles from a facility at the back end of an industrial estate in Cumbernauld since July 2022. Read more: About half of Skyrora's employees are located in Ukraine, where the "Rocket City" of Dnipro was home to Soviet space rocket manufacturing during that era. When the Soviet Union collapsed, the remnants of its space program in Ukraine were reorganized into their own space agency. Mr Levykin founded Skyrora shortly after the UK government introduced the Space Industry Bill to support development of the national sector, and naturally sought out the expertise in his homeland to bolster capability within the business. Being a rocket company in a war zone following the invasion, operations were quickly upended as new systems were put in place to protect the technology and the company's people. It's one of many obstacles that Skyrora has overcome to reach today's licencing announcement ahead of a programme that is expected to reach 16 launches per year by 2030. "Becoming the first home-grown company in the UK to receive a launch operator licence is a testament to the hard work and dedication of everyone at Skyrora," Mr Levykin said. "We are pleased to be able to move forward with our launch plans. "Given that operators like us, alongside the CAA, have been forging a new path, the journey to getting our UK licence has been a long but ultimately rewarding one." Read more: Others are due to follow with another Scottish rocket manufacturer, Orbex, now aiming to achieve its first satellite launch from SaxaVord in 2026. Orbex put work on its own spaceport in Sutherland on hold in December of last year following the surprise announcement that it had come to an agreement with former rival SaxaVord to use its launch facilities. Orbex is now focusing on the development of rockets designed specifically for launch from the Unst site. This has raised questions about the financial viability of the Sutherland spaceport going forward, but regardless of how that plays out, Scotland continues to boast outsized capability in the orbital economy with "end-to-end" expertise ranging from launchpads and rocket manufacturing to satellite construction and downstream data crunchers. It has been estimated that by 2030, the international market for launch, satellite, payload and space data services will be worth $1 trillion (£772 billion) annually. Scotland aims to capture about £4bn of this, a relatively small but nonetheless ambitious target that would go a long way towards revitalising the country's economy. UK mosquito invasion imminent as expert explains how to avoid being attacked
A mosquito invasion could hit the UK in weeks and Brits will be 'eaten alive' expert warns but they won't just be coming for blood - they could be bringing dengue and malaria with them. Brits are being urged to brace themselves for a surge in mosquitoes as weather conditions create a perfect invite for the blood-sucking pests. After recent thunderstorms and now, the soaring heat, there is now a record number of mosquitoes and experts say we're just weeks away from an outbreak. "We currently have the perfect breeding conditions for mosquitoes in the UK and it is only a matter of a couple of weeks before there's an outbreak in the UK. People are already getting eaten alive and coming to me for advice," said Howard Carter, bite prevention specialist. "In fact, last year there were record numbers of people bringing back dengue and malaria." It comes after the 'UK's most dangerous plant' left a toddler in A&E with second-degree burns. But it's not just itchy bumps we should be worried about, some of these bugs are bringing serious health risks. "They're out for blood," Howard warned. "The Asian Tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus, which can carry Dengue, is present in the UK, but currently does not carry the dengue fever virus.' "Although because UK residents are bringing back more mosquito-borne diseases from overseas travel it is only a matter of time before there is a dengue outbreak on these shores. It's a similar story with malaria, which had a resurgence after Covid," he said. And it has already begun worldwide after the World Health organisation (WHO) reported record numbers of dengue cases worldwide. Whether in your garden or on holiday, Howard is urging people to follow his CLOAK method: C – Cover up arms and legs with suitable clothing. L – Light coloured clothes are strongly advisable because mosquitoes are attracted to dark colours. O – Odours, bodily or scented products, can be strong attractants. Use citronella or other repellent shower gels, shampoos and soaps. Exfoliate with a loofah if you're a mosquito magnet. A – Apply an effective, preferably natural, insect repellent containing PMD. Incognito contains the purest PMD, so is therefore stronger and is clinically proven to provide 100% protection. K – Keep away from stagnant water if possible. "A lot of mosquitoes zero in on the ears, wrists and ankles because this is where the skin is thinner and blood vessels are nearer the surface. So, it is a good idea to wash with a soap or loofah that contains citronella, then spray and use a moisturiser containing a clinically proven repellent," he added. "But always use the spray last. In addition you could use an incognito Insect Repellent Bracelet, which can be worn on the wrist or ankle." Howard warns the risk is still as high indoors: "Use protection on any exposed skin and spray your clothing as well; mosquitoes can and will bite through fabric, even thick jeans! "Spray an insect repellent on and around your door before entering, as mosquitoes often lie in wait on the outside of doors and windows and this simple procedure helps to keep them out."

Russia hit with one of the strongest ever quakes - how bad is an 8.8 earthquake?
A massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck Russia 's far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula on Tuesday, making it the sixth strongest ever recorded and the biggest since the 2011 quake that hit Japan. The US Geological survey said the earthquake was shallow, with its epicentre at a depth of about 19km (12 miles) and 119 km (74 miles) east-southeast of Russia's remote Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky city with a population of about 165,000 people. Earthquakes are caused when the planet's rocky tectonic plates, floating on magma, rub against each other, releasing massive amounts of energy. While the Richter scale has been traditionally used and mainly effective for regional earthquakes up to about magnitude 5, the Moment magnitude scale is used for larger tremors as it takes into account more factors like the size of the fault rupture. Quake magnitudes are measured on a logarithmic scale, meaning a near magnitude 9 quake is 1,000 times more powerful than one measuring 6. Biggest quakes in recorded history The devastation to life and property caused by an earthquake is often dependent on a number of factors, such as the distance from the quake's epicentre, the architecture of a region and its population density, as well as the depth of the earthquake event and its surrounding geological conditions, as well as after effects like tsunamis. For instance, an earthquake that hit Morocco, measuring a magnitude of 6.8, led to nearly 3,000 fatalities as it struck at a shallow depth of only about 12 to 18 km. The biggest earthquake in recorded history was one of magnitude 9.5 that struck Valdivia, Chile in 1960, killing from 1,000 to 6,000 people, according to various sources. Its epicentre was at a subduction zone where the Pacific continental tectonic plate dives under the South American plate. The second biggest quake, with a magnitude of 9.2, struck Alaska in 1964 and was also at a subduction zone where the Pacific plate dives under the North American plate. While on a scale comparable to the Chile quake, the Alaskan earthquake killed fewer than 150 people, with 15 directly attributed to the earthquake and over 120 caused by a resulting tsunami. The Great Tohuku earthquake that struck Japan in 2011 was of magnitude 9.1, but triggered a massive tsunami waves measuring over 40 metres tall in some areas, leading to over 15,000 deaths and displacing over 130,000 people. In the current century, the infamous 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake is the largest in terms of magnitude at 9.3M, also triggering a devastating tsunami that claimed a quarter million lives. Warning signs Some megaquakes have been preceded by smaller 'foreshocks'. However, such smaller tremors cannot be identified as a foreshock until after a larger earthquake hits the same area. In the case of the Russian earthquake, scientists have spotted several foreshocks that struck around the region in the past month. A magnitude 7.4 earthquake recorded in the region on 20 July, could now be considered a foreshock to this morning's earthquake, according to the USGS. 'A clear subduction megathrust event. And another M>8.5 event with a notable foreshock (the recent M7.4 in same location), like Tohoku 2011. Tsunami warnings/watches should be taken seriously,' seismologist Harold Tobin, director of the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network said in a post on X. While the area impacted by this 8.8M quake has been large, the number of people living in and around the region is 'limited', according to data released by the USGS. 'Interestingly, the M8.8 earthquake this morning was preceded by a series of highly intensive foreshocks, including an Mw 7.4 earthquake and three Mw 6.6 earthquakes (July 20, 2025), as well as a series of smaller earthquakes before the main earthquake,' seismologist Dimas Salomo Sianpar from Indonesia said in a post on X. 'The foreshock phenomenon was also observed in other megathrust earthquake events,' Dr Salomo Sianpar said in a translated post. Several people were injured in the Russia's remote region following the 8.8 quake and Japan has issued a tsunami advisory, warning its eastern seaboard of waves of up to 3m (10ft) high. No serious injuries or fatalities had been reported, according to Russia's Ministry for Emergency Services. The US Tsunami Warning System also issued a warning of "hazardous tsunami waves" within the next three hours.
