Lights, camera, action as Walled City show lives on

SAR tourism officials and film veterans on Friday hailed the launch of a new exhibition that allows people to take a deep dive into iconic 1980s life at Kowloon Walled City using replica movie sets, saying the attraction will create new economic benefits.
The launch of the three-year show – "Kowloon Walled City: A Cinematic Journey" – came after the government on Tuesday unveiled a total of nine tourism hotspots, including the exhibition, to woo tourists for in-depth tours.
In an opening ceremony for the exhibition, Deputy Chief Secretary Warner Cheuk said the show – which is located at Kowloon Walled City Park, the site of the original slum city – is much bigger than two earlier versions of the exhibition that were held at the airport and Kai Tak.
The exhibition features replica movie sets from last year's "Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In" hit film.
"The film scene exhibition not only attracts more visitors to the park but also connects to scenic spots in Kowloon City, such as the Kai Tak Sports Park, urban views and Thai-style cuisine in the district," Cheuk said.
"Through various tourist routes within the area, tourists can experience the authentic culture of Hong Kong and taste different delicacies.
"At the same time, this can boost consumption in the area and create economic benefits."
The exhibition is the third to feature the hit movie and will present more iconic sets from the film, including a barber, tailor and fish-ball shops as well as a bing sutt precursor to today's cha chan teng.
Visitors will be able to explore the exhibition using interactive technology to experience the lives of residents living in the walled city back in the 1980s.
Officials will also roll out designs using augmented technology in the district from the third quarter of this year.
Hong Kong Film Development Council chairman Wilfred Wong said the show will allow visitors to learn more about Hong Kong's history.
He added that large projection screens installed on rooftops will give people a sense of what days and nights are like living in Kowloon Walled City, with special sound effects, such as of planes reverberating over the district.

The WestK chief said there is great demand on the mainland and elsewhere for original content from the SAR, and the programmes that were brought to Shanghai contained a strong Hong Kong element. The original Cantonese musical, "The Impossible Trial", for example, received overwhelming success in the mainland city, she said. Another major accomplishment, Fung added, was helping talented, up-and-coming Hong Kong artists and performers make their mark outside the city. "Through this week of events, many of them had become beloved artists in Shanghai, and there were people actually queuing up outside the theatres to ask for signatures.' Going forward, Fung said WestK will continue to work on establishing itself on the regional and international stage. "I. M. Pei: Life Is Architecture exhibition is now in Shanghai and will go to Doha in Qatar later this year, and also our programmes like the Hong Kong Palace Museum exhibitions will be on show at the Capital Museum in Beijing,' she noted. 'So this 'going global' strategy will continue not just to mainland cities but many different parts of the world." Fung said she's exploring the possibility of taking WestK highlights to cities where there is a large Cantonese-speaking population, saying she believes there is great demand for artistic and cultural content from Hong Kong.

Photo: RTHK Large crowds headed to Victoria Park on Tuesday to see more than 100 panda installations that came in different sizes, as part of celebrations marking the SAR's 28th anniversary. Two of the installations are as tall as 2 metres. Lulu and her family went to the park especially for the pandas. "[It's] really interesting. The kid and my husband, both of them enjoyed [it] a lot. They want to do the same pose as those giant pandas," she said. "We are fans of pandas, we have many doll pandas at home." Chan, who is a photographer, said the panda installations are unique. "Usually, panda installations do not allow the public to get close to them. We can only take photos of them from outside," she said. "But the special thing about this installation is that it allows us to come in and touch them, which allows the public to be more engaged and take photos of the atmosphere, which is quite cute." Some even brought along panda plush toys to pose for photos. The event, organised by the Hong Kong Celebrations Association, also features a robot dog that can interact with visitors. Sze, who often watches videos of the invention online, told RTHK that it was his first time seeing the robot in real life. "The ones I saw from YouTube could do backflips and do a lot of tricks. But I couldn't see the one here performing these tricks. Maybe because there are too many people here."

Photo: RTHK RTHK on Tuesday kicked off an exhibition of vinyl records in Sha Tin, showcasing more than 140 items dating as far back as the 1930s. The records cover a variety of genres, ranging from local and western pop to Chinese opera and classical music. Works on display include records from the likes of Madonna and the late Elvis Presley, as well as local legends such as Sam Hui and Jacky Cheung, as well as the late Leslie Cheung and Danny Chan. Visitors can also take photos posing as the singers on the record cover, and download a digital copy. Director of Broadcasting Angelina Kwan said at the event's opening ceremony that Hong Kong is a cultural hub where East meets West. She said RTHK has always promoted the development of arts and culture. "We call on the public to pay a visit to the exhibition, to get a taste of Hong Kong's audio memories together," she said. "You can also get to feel again the dreams of local musicians, and the youth and emotions of music fans." Admission is free for the event at New Town Plaza that runs until July 9.
